You might try Audacity, which is free. That should give you a nice waveform on screen that you can compare. If that ends up being too basic a program, then you could move on into SoundForge and the like.

I´ll bump this thread up, since it is going to become more relevant since the German OOT DVD´s for 9/12 apparently don´t have the original German textcrawl preserved.

In another thread, I remembered that on my VHS broadcast recording sequence, the speeder had a huge yellowish blob flickering to hide the wheels from the prop. My claim was that this was already fixed in the OOT Laserdiscs from the Definitive/THX edition!

I've got the original tape (Original Kaufkassette) from "Krieg der Sterne" for the Video2000. It is from the year 1982.
I've got the missing Laserdisc from the Silver Screen Collection.

The Silverscreen Collection VHS Edition and the Widescreen 1993 VHS seems to have the same audio-master [still checking], just differ in timing (lipsync).
However the 1995 THX VHS differs greatly and as I have described before is not my favourite, especially because is it not the original 1977 audio. The included echo-effect on all deathstar indoor scenes just sounds so cheap. It is also missing some lines of dialogue.

The Whole OUT-DVD Release seems to just care for the USA-Cinema-like Experience. It seems missing the original title here "Krieg der Sterne" and the original title crawl. Does anyone know, if a german title-crawl is even included?

For the main part of the movie I'll proberly take the videotrack of the PAL OUT-DVDs, but exchange title crawl and audio. My confidence in the X0-Project is unbroken and I am sure there will be a second edition with a superior videotrack using x0.

At the moment I only made test captures of the two vhs-tapes from the first movie. ESB and ROTJ will be captured later. I need to get my SVHS-Recorder back from service. I just haven't had time yet to get it back. After that and after some capture calibration everything will be captured again.

So for now I can post both Fullscreen and Widescreen - German Title Crawls from the first movie. You need audio, too? Which format (they are captured with Huffyuv-Codec) you want me to post them? With Huffyuv they have over 700MB each! I can run it through CCE-SP and post a MPEG-2 PAL Videoclip.

Be patient and you will get 3 really nice Dual Layer DVDs to download.

It depends which soundtrack you got from SoundTrackMaster. The THX 95 Laserdisc Soundtrack is crap if you ask me, at least for ANH. But it should be featured nethertheless.

That was the idea. Squeesh the Full Frame to anamorphic widescreeen and combine it with a OUT-DVD (made anamorphic, too). But if I get a better picture quality from the 1993 laserdiscs, I will better use them of course. But at the moment I am still searching for a good laserdisc player.

I have compared every frame from the VHS Silver Screen Collection as well as the VHS Widescreen 1993 Release to the X0-Timecode Release. The problem seems to be, both tapes seems to be missing some frames. I don't mean the capture but the vhs-source. Sometimes only the Widescreen is missing 2-3 frames, sometimes only the Silver Screen Collection misses some, manytimes both of them. We are talking about ~70 Frames in total each. So to keep the audio in sync with the picture, I will need to get rid of those missing frames in the videotrack I want to use (X0/OUT). But as far as I know there is no way to get two (or three) of those "edits" on one disc. So the easy way would be 3 releases of each movie. One with the audio from the SilverScreenCollection, one with the audio from the 93-Widescreen Release and one with the thx-audio from 95. But as I noted before, the SilverScreenCollection and 93-Widescreen sound like each other, so two releases with identical audio would be a little redundant.

I haven't checked it yet, but my guess is, that the THX 1995 Tapes have the exact same edit as the NTSC-DC/Faces-Laserdiscs.

Don't know anything about differences in ESB/ROTJ yet.

Ok, I´m afraid that would be a little too far away...

I was thinking about getting the Silver Screen Collection myself, and extract the german title crawl and sound out of it. Since these discs are PAL CLV, some footage from them could perhaps be used to replace the "disc change" scenes from the 1995 THX PAL LD´s. But then again, it seems that the master used on these discs is not good...

I guess MPEG2 will do as long as you boost the bitrate to maximum.

The fullscreen captures showed some serious ghosting (black halos around the text, visible on the greyish/greenish starfield), but I think the higher resolution allows these to be recomped on a cleaner starfield-background. It would of course be best if you could post both versions (widescreen and fullscreen) as MPEG2 clips (without audio).

EDIT: Oh, by the way, does your "Das Imperium schlägt zurück"-VHS still have the misspelled "züruck" in the crawl?

Just got my OUT DVD Ep4, PAL, RC2. There is no sign of "Krieg der Sterne" anywhere, there is no german title crawl, no german end titles (abspann). Really dissapointing, if you ask me. If you choose german language, you get german dvd-subtitles on the title scroll and for greedo. Sound doesn't seem to be the THX 1995 Track, at least the (cheap) echo is not included.

I can support you with screenshots, made by virtualdub, .png format. just tell me what you would like to see.

...but I got my SVHS-Recorder back from service.
I have done a capture of "Die Story vom Krieg der Sterne", which is a german dubbed version of "The Making of Star Wars".
I am now playing with brightness/contrast settings to get the full 0-255 bandwidth but without clipping black/white.
After some practice I will sure recapture ANH.
Please be patient.

Maybe you can try Citizen's idea of multiple captures, and averaging those, to get rid of interferences and noise.

By the way, I am more interested in the three crawls alone (or six, considering capturing both the quasi-anamorphic and the letterbox-version), so maybe you can do those first ... it's OK if not though.

I actually have MPEG2-Recordings of the German textcrawls (and German end Credits of ANH) from the Silver Screen LDs (2.35:1 non-anamorphic). However, the picture quality is not great, especially on the first textcrawl. You barely can see any stars.

I am of German descent (grandparents came from there) and have always wanted to learn German. I took several years in college and when my wife and I went to Germany for our Honeymoon in 1997 we saw ROTJ in the theater in german... it was very fun to see a film you are familiar with in a language you are learning...

I bought the 2004 DVDs from Amazon.de but would LOVE to get an adaptation of the OUT in German. I will be keeping an eye on this thread with great interest.

I've been scouring the web for any German dubbed Star Wars OT online but found nada!
I'm currently planning an amusing side-project for which I need the german soundtrack.
SO...as some may have asked before me....

Is there anyone who would like to share the soundtrack as LPCM or AC3.

And on that not I would like to make it clear that I'm not going to start a new preservation project!

As we all know by now, the GOUT DVDs do not feature a german title crawl.

I am using the gout videotrack, made it anamorph (avs script --> cce sp reencoding).

In the last week I was trying to merge my german title crawl with the gout videotrack of episode 4 and was very successful.

The crawl is from the VHS Silver Screen Collection, featuring the title crawl stretched to 720x576.

Episode 4 GOUT german audio sounds pretty filtered. Listen to the very first sentences of C-3PO ("Hast du das gehört?..."). Compare it to the Silverscreen VHS Audio and you will know what I mean:
