Preservation Wiki?

I know we have the Fan Project Wiki, but this idea is different.

Our understanding of the Star Wars trilogy is slowly becoming its own discipline. If you consider none's shot spreadsheet, Darth Mallwalker's reel length list, and other similar OT threads, you'll see what I mean.

This large body of information is all stored on this forum and, despite the effectiveness of "site:originaltrilogy.com XXX" searches, can be sometimes difficult to find and/or update.

I think we need a wiki to:

 • Keep this information separate from the discussion(s)
 • Make this information searchable and updatable

What do you think?

"And I'm shocked at you Moth3r for being off-topic, Because if people off-topic you say "stay on-topic, STAY on-topic, STAY ON-TOPIC", and we are not in the Off topic section of OT.com, now are we?" –pat man

My Galactic Trade Federation website was done years ago to try to make sense of all the preservations of the day. My more recent OT.com posts on audio dialogue differences and GOUT synced sources have attempted to do the same thing so I think something is needed.

A properly designed and regularly updated WIKI would be perfect but getting people to do it is another story......

I have been trying to give away the GTF site for years with no interest to date.

Maybe we can use GTF as a base for a wiki and archive-off a copy of it to download.

If enough people are interested in a wiki, would you be interested in helping me transfer information to it?

Yay!

So the next big question is: If there's enough interest, should I ask Jay to add a wiki to this server or should set one up off-site?

Anything other than on your ISP free webspace with your real name plastered all over it!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck and I really hope you can pull something worthwhile together - if the interest is really there.

The idea behind the GTF site was a 2005 version of your Post 1 but 4 people with massive plans was soon became 1 with me left alone to try to make work.

I think you've bitten off more than I could chew.
5xPS78 raw uploads, 7FN uploads, not to mention all those VHS you've been buying. You'll burn out.

Wiki should be searchable, so . . . not here.
CRC/MD5/SHA-whatever haven't been welcome here either

However, in practice you must take into account the "fuckwit factor". Just talk to Darth Mallwalker...

You're probably right. I'll put the wiki on the back-burner for now.

The 7FN uploads shouldn't be an issue. I have more than enough bandwidth to handle that.

PS78 is a lot of work. The other VHS tapes will probably take a long time to do.

Regarding CRC/MD5/SHA: do you mean the signatures aren't allowed here? If so, that's fine, as I was just discussing the algorithms themselves.

RE: Preservation Wiki?

Information about the films can be placed into wookieepedia (http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page) without many headaches. We can probably work with them to see how they would react to fan projects getting into their pages. Did chat with them briefly at Celebration VI this past weekend. (but it was about coordinating a foreign language initiative) There is an offshoot of wookiepedia which maybe more receptive to fan projects, for example the Phantom Edit has a page: http://swfans.wikia.com/wiki/The_Phantom_Edit

RE: Preservation Wiki?

I think a wiki "knowledge base" is a good idea.

Jay was at one time planning to extend the fan project wiki to include articles on the various sources (so, for example, we could list the various nuances for each SW laserdisc release). This was never implemented, and interest in developing the wiki has waned.

There was at one time a site (wiki.dvdholocron.com - you can check the remnants out on web.archive.org) that listed Star Wars fan projects on a wiki. It became quite popular, I'm guessing because it used the MediaWiki platform which many people were familiar with from Wikipedia.

However, the site only lasted a few months, I think the fact that it included download links led to it receiving a C&D from Lucasfilm relating to daveytod's The Clones Revealed.

It is true that Jay did once say he didn't want CRC's posted becasue of the implied link with downloads, but personally I think this is being overcautious.

How about I attempt to install MediaWiki at moth3r.heliohost.org? The site's on a free host so access can be a little flaky sometimes, but we could put some articles up as a test and if it's a success maybe badger Jay to port it over here.

Guidelines for post content and general behaviour: read announcement here

Max. allowable image sizes in signatures: reminder here

This could also be a good way to track and list all the differences (audio and visual) between the versions. Scene by scene articles with variations listed.

I only had a brief mention of The Clones Revealed on GTF and I got the same C&D!!!!

I think more of a knowledge bank is what is needed and maybe even omit the preservation/transfer work already done if that could be percieved as a problem.

If there was one place that had all the differences in all releases of all films in all formats and languages, that would be amazing. The nearest place to that is here but not too easily searchable.

A good example is how many threads are titled around ESB 70mm differences? At least three or four the last time I looked as well as all the other references in other threads. These are the sort of things I would like to see in a wiki.

That sounds like a great idea, Moth3r! Let's give it a shot.

Agreed except for one minor nitpick: I do see value in including information on the preservation/transfer work that's been done. No download-hyperlinks, but stuff like "this frame is missing in X" would be useful.

RE: Preservation Wiki?

I too see value in including the preservations but not if there is a risk of more C&D's.....

If you are looking at "Test Articles", feel free to take anything from GTF or even the Starkillers Guide to the Monomix which really needs updating and putting somewhere else. I only hosted it as a favour!!!

RE: Preservation Wiki?

Good luck with that.

All you need to do is get every piece of factual information from every post on OT.com and every link ever linked to and put it in one place in a nice user-friendly searchable format.

After that, perfecting cold-fusion, time travel and light-speed travel will be a walk in the park!!

I was up for this 7 years ago and I am still up for it now if required and there is enough interest.

Why don't we start small here? Let's collect a list of posts that would be wiki-worthy.

 1. russs15's GOUT-sync Post ;-p
 2. Darth Mallwalker's Reel Lengths Post
 3. none's Shot List Spreadsheet Post
 4. none's Credits & Leaders Post
 5. negative1's GOUT Frame-data Post
 6. negative1's Cropping Post

I think the data-collection problem will be a bit easier when we have categories (and sub-categories and so on...) in which to organize the data.

Er Cheers!

At the moment, trying to get my head around the best way to start organising this information.

Hopefully, as this is User Generated Content it's not going to be just me working on this!

AntcuFaalb, that's a great idea, thankyou.
