I'm completely with the ideas posted so far. Spam posting annoys me to no end.

Princess Leia: I happen to like nice men.
Han Solo: I'm a nice man.

i think you really should do the time period thing, so like 2 months ad say like 200 posts will get you to a to be ready for the trials 500 and 6 months to be a knight, and like 1000 and a year to be a master. that will kill the spam and definatly keep the tradition up of keeping with the titles, i dont think you should leave the title opinion to the poster, cause it takes some of the goodness outta it. like i like looking at the side and seeing that i am a council member, it addes a homeliness to the place to me.

I agree with Shimraa. At least keep the titles to give us something to shoot for. And time length will help reduce spam, I think.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming... Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I really like Shimraa idea!
Also maybe you could add a few more reserved titles for member that have made their own transfers; dark_jedi, citizen, moth3r, and others. Also maybe a title for the art gifted people like Boba Feta and Coov, or even for the people that upload alot, Rikter, Metallaxis, Segaflip. Of course I think you should still have time restriction on these too, so some one cant turn out their own trasfer and ask for that title with in 5 minutes of joining.

Here's a twist on the idea: For those who post MORE than X number of posts in a given time period, slap a title on them that isn't a positive one.

For example, if I post 250 messages in a month, I'd get something like "Needs to get a life" under my name.

Yep. good idea, may stop the people who joined 3 or 4 months ago with over a 1000 posts already.

And also lets NOT turn this into an US AND THEM site with elitist ideas like special nicks etc.

I agree with Eros. If we're trying to make things a bit even keeled by eliminating post counts, then how is having rank-based titles a good thing? Just get rid of it altogether. Save "Emperor" for Jay, save "Imperial Guard" for the forum mods, and reserve "Bantha Fodder" for people who annoy us (in a joking way, of course). Save nothing else. After thinking about it, this is really how I feel now.

But I do still stand by my idea that everyone should start as "Padawan Learner" and stay at that level for six months to prove their mettle. No post counts should play into this at all. Then they can create their own title. Eliminate all other post-based titles.

"Who's scruffy-lookin'?" - Han Solo

I don't know. I like the idea of reaching for the ranks. It was fun.

Reaching for ranks isn't bad...we just need better criteria.

"In my mind, a member's signup date"

Call it an "Incept date" and you've got my vote.
MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They're certainly beyond any repair you're capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren't one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can't say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won't suck as much as a fan edit.

You know I've always wanted to know what the actual ranking was--from Emperor and down--what was it?

I tried to edit, but it wouldn't let me...

Won't personalized titles kill the idea of ranks, and just reduce it to nicknames?

Well, the idea was to kill those who spam just to bump their post count. I can see the ups and downs to it. But, considering how much spam we've had here in the past, I support the idea. True, it's not as bad as it was, but it can be bad again. It takes only one bad egg...

There is also a "forum moderator" but that title is held only by Zion.

hey jay just thought of an awesome way you could reduce the amount of stupid and spaming posts on the forum. what you can do is to build in a limit for the number of times a person can post in an hour or a day or something like that. forums are not really chat lines and since you have the IRC set up you can boast the number of people there and reduce the number of stupid pointless posts in the forum. but it couldnt be too big, you could probably do something like 5 - 10 posts/ hr or like 15 posts a day or something like that or something along those lines. and you could disable it for certain members i.e. mods. just a thought, i dont knwo how hard it would be to implement at this point or how much work but it would cut the amount of rediculas traffic in half. and you would get people spending more time and more effort on each one of there posts creating a higher quality and smarter forum.

Not gonna happen.

You guys should move to China. I think you'd be happier with the freedom of information exchange they offer their netizens.

Actually its not a bad idea though 5-10 posts per *day* might be it bit too severe. Perhaps limit the amountof posts per *hour* or something.

But then again I can see Jay's point about having as much freedom as possible in the forums and allowing us to self-police by flaming the crap out of trolls until they give up or cross the line. So basically I'm straddling the fence, which I'll have to say is not the most comfortable thing to do...

The only post limiting I've seen on other boards is 1 post every 60 seconds, and that's to control spammers and genuine troublemakers.
