Paint Wars: A New Hope
I got bored looking at the forums yesterday.

Then I decided,

I'd like to contribute something to the OOT community.

But even though it's top-notch,

My computer will not cooperate with video files other than game and SWF.

Then I thought:

YES! That'd be perfect! And it hasn't even been done before!

And so, I proceed to create:

PAINT WARS (a.k.a. Crappy Star Wars)

A recreation of the Original Star Wars Trilogy using extremely sloppy MSPaint bitmaps.

In a comic-book like fashion.

And it shall be posted exclusively here on Originaltrilogy.com.

10 Images per post.

When finished, someone could make a slideshow of it synced with the movie audio.

Send me a PM requesting caption removal.

I shall upload the first 10 images in a few minutes...

The thing is, that even though the images are BMPs, ImageShack automatically converts them to PNG format. So I'm comfortable with that.

NOOOOO!!!

Whatever you do, do not -- I repeat: DO NOT -- make these things JPGs. The JPEG format was not designed for big blocks of solid colours, and will actually look worse and increase the size of the file over PNG.

PNG is lossless, but compressed, which will give you exactly what is put in (unlike JPG), and will be nice and small. Line art like yours will compress to a huge degree.

The best idea is to convert to PNG before uploading. For example, the title card graphic you posted is just 23kB as lossless PNG. It is impossible to create a JPG with that quality and that size. BMP is a terrible choice for uploading, because it is uncompressed. Each picture would probably be about a MB, I'd guess? Boo...

It doesn't take THAT long. I'm using 56k and it only takes about a minute.

But if you think converting to PNG beforehand helps, then point me to a converter, because I don't have one.

Did a little experiment: Took your "Episode IV" crawl screen, and converted it to various formats.

BMP: 1.37MB, uncompressed, edges sharp
JPG: 139kB, lossy compressed, edges blurry
PNG: 23kB, losslessly compressed, edges sharp

That is why converting first is best, and why you should not convert "cartoon-like" line art to JPG.

I actually suck at MSPaint. I'm much more talented on paper and pencil though...

Don't worry Richard, I'm doing the whole Original Trilogy by myself. Don't know how long it will take but it'll be worth it.

I'm just drawing the images. Someone else can do the flash video. Laserman already made an animated GIF, so it shouldn't be too hard converting it to flash and synching it with the movie audio...
