A few weeks ago a thread on Reddit was started by some one who apparently has reels 2-6 of an I.B. Tech. print of Star Wars.
Yes, there are pics and they are GLORIOUS.
Surely someone here has got word of this print, but if not...

This would be incredible source material for a preservation.

See You, Space Cowboy...I think just showing it off... but whoever this is expressed interest in getting it transferred in that thread. Gave him a prod in our direction, hopefully team -1 and this person can strike a deal of some sort.

Wish he had reel 1, but otherwise this is fantastic.

Padawan LearnerWow! This looks interesting. Now I just have to get my old ass to sign up and figure out reddit. Somebody's gotta have a 2k scanner in their garage by now, I thought this was the future.

A professional 1080p scan of Star Wars would only cost $550 (well, if the place I'm talking about would scan copyrighted movies - they did a trailer for me). Much less than the cost of the HLD-X0.
4K would be a lot more: $5000 at the place I just looked at.

I'd settle for the time being with some one just pointing a video camera at one of these things being projected like the Senator Screeening clips except for the whole movie. Then maybe a taster of this could reach a wider audience, and maybe force the hand of the powers that be to present an official release of one of these prints.

SO if we all chip in $5? I would go to $15, we need that guy on here asap

Hey I'm the guy from reddit with the print. I'm down for helping out with a preservation scan, however, as someone else posted above, 4k is ridiculously expensive, and 2k Would cost about half that. That's not even taking into consideration finding a lab that would do this on the DL. I've helped out with trailer discs before and the labs have no problems transferring those, but the copyright on 70's exploitation trailers isn't as big of an issue as it would be with SW. From a film collectors standpoint, the print is nice/good. I've only had a chance to project one reel, and there was only 1 small skip in it of a couple frames, and based on what I was told there's not too many splices in the other reels. It has dirt and lines here and there, but that's not really an issue with wet gate transfers. I've found a reel 1 from the mono american release, but have not received it yet. I'm trying to track down a reel 1 from the SE release, but I'm told there were several changes in that reel from the original version.

Oh please. You just need to find someone who isn't a pussy.
By what possible method would Disney be able to track down the place that scanned it, and why would they care? mikeaz123 is who they would target for legal action. (Hope you signed up here under seven proxies!)

Team Negative 1 has a homemade scanner that gets pretty good results, but that would involve shipping your reels to them.
^ I'd add that this option is probably your only realistic option for having a good scan done in a reasonable timeframe (still could take years, they've got other stuff going on). If you're serious about getting it scanned, this is the way to go.

Or another group could build a scanner.

Easy for you to say. It's a calculated risk to one's business, however small. And most people do not have a 35mm telecine in their home away from prying eyes.

He would have to leave it there, there is a chance he could leave it and never get it back.

I can't do 4K but it would cost me about USD$6000 to upgrade my current rig to 2736x2192 @ 48bit colour, which is about 6MP per frame.
But with a new gate and a few other adjustments I could do 2K now.

No commercial scanning company will touch it, and if they did it would likely be confiscated.

48bit colour? Seems like way overkill.
