See You, Space Cowboy...Thoughts? They're on the air now obviously. I've been tuning in sporadically.
Seth's been... eh. He is doing better than I expected but there's a lot of jokes - especially that last crack he made before Selma Hayek came on - that are making me cringe.
What are your thoughts on the winners?
Predictions for what's left?
Is Seth killing it, or killing the Oscars?

Seriously though, I only caught the James Bond salute. That was nice.

See You, Space Cowboy...That was a lot of fun, yeah. Very well done, and the visuals that accompanied it were a pretty good if unoriginal montage.
edit: Seriously, what is up with all the Williams cues tonight? I mean I love him but... is it like this every year?

Jedi KnightI liked William Shatner's Kirk cameo. Watched the first hour then tuned in and out. Seemed a bit more old-fashioned and low-key than a lot of other years. I wasn't that surprised with many of the wins except that Life of Pi won so many, especially best director--Ang Lee looked genuinely surprised. Zero Dark Thirty didn't win anything, and Lincoln, even if it got the big actor win, didn't grab anything else and even best picture winner Argo walked away with just that. It was a pretty wide range of winners, with Life of Pi unexpectedly coming out on top.

Yep. 50 years, only two awards and...we get some film clips sporadically cut together cropped and re-scored and remixed. At least they decided to do something worthwhile and invite Dame Shirley. ;) The rumor was that the producers had wanted to have all 5 original actors and that other guy onstage but obviously they have no idea how much a certain Scot still has reservations.
edit: Seriously, what is up with all the Williams cues tonight? I mean I love him but... is it like this every year?
Yes, but there were less than usual. The usage of the Jaws theme as the playing off music for winners was both too obvious and rather distasteful.
I don't know if this year was good or bad to be honest. Seth was good to a point but the majority of the jokes were not the greatest. He was at his best when making off the cuff asides. BUT ENOUGH WITH THE MUSICAL NUMBERS!!! Musicals being great this decade? What were they smoking? If they dropped all the bad musical numbers the show would have been way under time and far more enjoyable.
I didn't think there was much of a clear winner tonight. Argo got Best Picture but it wasn't the greatest movie to begin with. Lincoln's many nods were as safe as the film itself. The only tough races to call were the ones with no clear winners-Supporting Actor, Director, and many of the technical production categories.
Still...19/24....heh. My prediction ratio is still pretty good. I thought with all the Armour nods that there might be a major award somewhere.

Magister Pontifex MaximusDidn't watch but I think I must be going through the Gay Menopause because I'm beginning to find Ben Affleck attractive thumbing through the photos.

Chief Architect of Cynical MoralityI heard that the VFX guys who won for Life of Pi got cut off as soon as they mentioned how they hadn't gotten paid for doing the effects yet and were going out of business.
I guess the Academy likes pretty things, but doesn't care about actually keeping them around.

With a design of the Enterprise B in the background, i think that was a little bit of look JJ it can be done moment.
For me best part of the Oscars and funniest part.

Better a bad bomb than a bombadMcFarlane was pretty funny, I'm a little mad "Dark Knight Rises" didn't win more... or get nominated for anything. I wanted Tom Hardy as Bane to come and take over the ceremony.
Dustin Hoffman and Ric Flair are slowly turning into the same man.

South Jersey DevilI thought Seth McFarlene stunk. I didn't think he was bit funny, and sometimes I found his jokes in poor taste. I also didn't like the most of the comedy bits done by the people announcing awards, I was like "quit with the dumb asinine jokes that aren't a damn bit funny, and announce the damned award winner!"

It may have gone to far this year. But you want to blame anybody for the 'cutting off the winners' speeches' thing, blame the people in the past that got up there and talked on and on and on and held the Oscars hostage. I remember watching the Oscars as a kid and watched someone guy(don't know who he was" accept an award and talk on and on for almost 20 minutes. That kind of stuff delays the show and they had to do something about it.
Maybe this makes me odd, but can someone explain Quentin Tarantino to me? Why does he always show up at the Oscars looking like a slob? Does it cause him horrible pain and suffering to button the top button of his shirt and tighten the tie all the way up and groom his hair a little? Btw, to Mr Tarantino and other men: you are supposed to where a bow tie with Tux. I hate people that think they are too cold to dress up appropriately for events.

South Jersey DevilWhose responsibility is it to pay these guys? the Academy or the Producers of Life of Pi? Why haven't these guys been paid?
btw, I just rewatched the acceptance speech. The jaws music started to play long before any reference was made to anyone not be being paid. I suspect they would have been cut off where they were cut off no matter what they said.

Tarantino always thinks he's the coolest guy in the room. One of the reasons I find him so damn annoying, even while enjoying his work. He had to show that, yeah he's AT the Oscars, but he still knows he's too cool to be there.
I think the bow tie is on the way out. I think the string tie needs to come back.

South Jersey DevilI hope you are wrong about the bow tie. Imho, a tux just doesn't look right with a regular tie.
