To elaborate on the GOUT VS LD, I own the '95 THX LaserDiscs, also known as the "Faces" versions due to the cover layouts (see my avatar.)

I personally chose the LaserDiscs instead of the so-called GOUT DVDs because when I put on a DVD, I have certain anticipations, and GOUT just doesn't live up to them. The films are non-anamorphic, heavily desaturated, suffer from excessive noise reduction and are coated in what appears to be fake grain. Being from the same transfer, the LaserDiscs have the same flaws (apart from the seemingly fake grain), but it's less obvious on account of the picture being softer. If I were to put on the 2006 DVDs, I have this feeling that I would feel cheated, especially considering the prices they're fetching these days on eBay. They're just subpar products for the standard. Putting on the LaserDiscs just makes me feel nostalgic and all fuzzy inside ;)

Bear in mind that I'm not trying to dissuade you from getting the 2006 DVDs. They're definitely still the easiest way to go for a (legal) version of the original trilogy. However, I will say that even though I own an entry level LaserDisc player (Pioneer CLD-S315), these discs are looking way better on my 42" TV than I expected them to. And this is zoomed and cropped, mind you.

Finally, there are indeed some fantastic fan preservations out there, but technically, you are legally obliged to own the source of a preservation in order to download it.
