Obesity and Overweight

Obesity and overweight factsheet on WHO:

Overweight and obesity are the fifth leading risk for global deaths. At least 2.8 million adults die each year as a result of being overweight or obese. In addition, 44% of the diabetes burden, 23% of the ischaemic heart disease burden and between 7% and 41% of certain cancer burdens are attributable to overweight and obesity.

It causes heart disease & stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis and cancer.

And according to that page, 60% of obease adults are women, 40% are men. On another WHO page it explains that more men are overweight than women, but more women are obease then men.

From WHO:

Neat list of OECD countries (with a handful of non-oecd countries tacked on to the bottom too):
http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/8504/oecdobesitybycountry201.png

Statistically speaking, assuming we all come from OECD countries, 50% of ot.com members are overweight and need to go loose some weight!

I can't seem to see an option to do a POLL on this, but if you want, post whether u are overweight, underweight or neither. BMI calculator here that also does body fat. Remember, u can be fat and not look fat. I know someone at work, he's overweight he goes to weight watchers. Yet he looks like he's not overweight at all.

Mine BMI: 22.8, Body fat percent: 19.8%.

Discuss.

Yes, but luky for Americans they actually aren't the fattest country in the world - Mexico is: they're just the most obese country in the world (probably not much better) with a 50:50 split between overweight and obese. That'd have to be the highest ratio of any county. CA/UK/AU/NZ all about 40% of overweights are obese - 60:40 split (canada exactly 60:40 by that chart anyway). Not posting your BMI bingowings?

I have a feeling that it'd be actually closer to 60-70% of ot.com pplz is overweight; on the basis that more fat people sit at their computers activly involved in forums all the time! ROFL

I actually like going on diets... since I'm not overweight I can go on really "loose" diets, such as the one I'm on right now: eat takeaway once a week. My favourite is no eating after 6PM, although I'm not on that one at the moment.

I actually should eat more protein though, so I should go back to my favourite bekky: 2x raw eggs, 1x glass of skim milk. I eat the eggs raw cause I'm too lazy to get up early enough to boil them, ROFL. (at the moment I have a s/w or a roll for my brekky) :)

Weight is a hard thing to deal with. I've fought it hard, and even became Anorexic at one point. Luckily, I got knocked on my ass and realized what I was doing to myself. I've developed better eating habits, and I try to get a decent amount of exercise each day. I'm in the same pant size I was in during the 8th grade.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality. I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I've never really had any problem with my weight. As a matter of fact, I should probably gain more! I can see my ribs!

It appears  that a lot of people on my mom's side of the family have had trouble with weight (and Alzheimer's), so I might have to be careful.

You will not. None of us will, except for a very old and dying Ziggy Stardust who will watch it through teary eyes as he remembers us all.

RE: Obesity and Overweight

A combination of moving away from friends and not playing basketball anymore, aging, a new career, a couple nagging injuries, and my wife deciding that she loved to cook contributed to me gaining a bunch of weight about five years ago.

I was miserable. Tired, cranky, uncomfortable. I'm a big man, tall and thickly built, and always had a bit of a belly, but carrying another 30+ lbs made me feel like I just didn't FIT into the world, like every chair was an ill fitting pair of pants. It sucked.

After a couple years of effort I'm mostly back in shape now. Without sounding judegmental, I wonder if people who are really fat feel the same way I did, or are some people just fat and comfortable.

RE: Obesity and Overweight

The most effective diet I was ever on was the 'not exercising' diet.

For several months due to an injury I couldn't excersise. All of a sudden I couldn't justify a slice of pie or a large soda pop with the mental excuse "eh, I'll work that off at the gym/court/trail"

In fact, it was the first time in my life I started to really think about and notice what I ate. It was paradigm shifting.

My best friend is obese... he'd have to loose 40% of his body weight to be my weight. I'm sure he just thinks of himself as fat/bulky rather than obese.

I am probably way off here, but I can't help but see this thread as being intended to be a bit of a gloat fest. It isn't like anyone who is actually obese is going to want to admit it to everyone, especially when the OP says he assumes probably 60-70% of us are overweight but makes certain to announce he isn't one of them.

Maybe you're onto something though, perhaps it would be nice to know how many of our fellow forum members are less attractive and/or dumber and/or poorer than us. I propose a series of new threads, one for posting our college GPA or to admit we didn't waste time with college, another one where we post our yearly income, and another one where we can post statistics on how frequently each of us gets laid. This could be fun!

That's not my intention. As I remarked, about 50% of our peers are overweight as it is. Think of it like smoking, except that instead of causing lung cancer it causes heart disease.

I hardley think the two different size peoples of the forum are going to start having it out with each other. Better if u want to discuss it :) after all it probably isn't a topic of general conversation with your friends!

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm morbidly obese, and have been dealing with my weight all of my life (I just turned 45 last month). A year ago, I topped out the scale at 460 pounds, just before I finally went under the knife and had bariatric surgery. It's nearly a year later, and thanks to the surgery, I've lost about 170 pounds, and the difference is like night and day. More energy, more stamina, better eating habits (which are rigorously enforced now that 80% of my stomach has been removed). My ultimate goal is to get down to around 225 pounds... still overweight, but manageable for me, as I'm realistic enough to know that I'm never going to be a thin person.

There are 10 types of people in this world: those who understand binary, and those who do not.

Went to the movies yesterday.I usually get myself a big soda to enjoy during the picture. Now I know sodapop ain't good for you, but now the theater has the calories over everything next to the price.

Large Soda: 0-800 calories.

YIKES. I know a can of pop is 100+ calories, but I just never did the math on what a giant tub of soda would add up to.

That's a game changer. For that might as well go get a freakin' sundae. I enjoyed the movie with a nice cup of coffee (6 calories).

Large Soda: 0-800 calories.

So it could be anywhere from zero to eight hundred, depending I'm guessing on how close to the bottom of the syrup barrel you are.

I think it's because you could concievably order a diet coke.:-P

But who would do that?!?

RE: Obesity and Overweight

They need to serve massive tub beers at movie theaters. Would make the movies a lot better, and I'd probably go to the cinema more often. And at least beer is worth the caloric intake; can't stand carbonated high fructose corn syrup water.

Whenever something is showing there I can stand, I try to take in pictures at the local art house. Because they have a full bar. Which rules.

RE: Obesity and Overweight

I always take in a bottle of water, and they don't say anything. I buy a big 35 pack case of bottled water for a little more than what a large soda costs at the theater.

If my tap water didn't taste so chlorinated, I wouldn't buy water.

They ought to at least make that unhealthy shit cheaper, if they are gonna charge $8 a ticket. I used to think it was murder to have to pay $3 dollars per ticket.

That's why I'm not quick to go to the theater. I get fucked twice if the movie sucks. Deathly Hallows pt. 1 was my last movie theater experience, and I haven't felt much need to go since then. I might see Super 8, because I love Spielberg and like J.J. Abrams fairly well.

I think we should at least get our money's worth. Maybe a price change, based on critical analysis?

Good movies can be $8

Shitty ones should be $2

The movie is just there so that the theatre can sell you drinks and popcorn.  They don't really make any money from the movie itself.

Which sort of makes me feel like a bad consumer since we never buy any concessions at the theatre.  As you said, my wallets already bled out due to ticket prices.

But then I remember... on average, people spend 110-130% on drinks and snacks as they do on tickets.  So when a movie makes 300 million dollars (but cost 300 million to make/market) that movie also made possible 350 million dollars of coke and popcorn sales (which cost probably a couple thousand dollars).  Theatres=making money.  Studios=breaking even.

True story.
