New forum software status - updated 1/4/2006
Last updated: 1/4/2006, 10:00 AM EST

Functionality confirmed to be working:

- creating an account
- logging in/logging out
- displaying available forums
- displaying threads in each forum with last post/replies/views info
- posting new threads
- posting replies
- subscribing to threads
- incorporating custom tags into post content (entirely new set of tags similar to those implemented in other forum software)
- editing posts
- buddy list
- ignore list
- ignore functionality (options to include blocking a user's posts entirely or blanking out the text with a link to display the text)
- bookmarks (each user will be able to add posts to a personal list of bookmarks for easy retrieval--great for classic "reference" threads)
- user profile settings (password, e-mail, etc.)
- avatar uploads
- user preference settings (thread age, threads per page, etc.)

In progress:

- user post history (threads originated by user and posts within threads)
- private message sending/receiving
- sending e-mails (via site contact form--no public displays of e-mail addresses)
- search

This is not a comprehensive list of forum features. I haven't forgotten the suggestions thread. This is merely what I consider necessary to go live with the software.

Most of the items in progress involve minor retooling of the core functionality related to completed items, so now that the core set of functionality is complete, finishing the rest should go quickly.

Please, no "when" questions. I'll post when it's ready.

I told myself I wouldn't do this, but what the hell. Here's a bit of a teaser.

Nothing works on that page. IE users shouldn't bother looking at it. It completely falls apart.

Still a work-in-progress, but it's coming along.

THE ONLY THING THAT I DON'T LIKE IS THE "REPLY TITLE." I'VE NEVER REALLY SEEN ANY REAL PUPOSE IN IT. WE ALL KNOW WHAT YOU'RE REPLYING TO, SO WHY HAVE HAVE THE TITLE. THE "QUOTE" FUNCTION THAT WE'VE HAD ON HERE HAS WORKED JUST FINE IMO.

I've been going back and forth on that myself. That title basically exists so the post has a name when displayed in search results (ideally, search results should provide exact posts and not merely topics). It's not marked as such, but it will be prepopulated with "RE: <post title>".

IN THAT CASE I DON'T MIND IT.

I JUST FIGURED THAT IT WAS A FUNCTION THAT WOULD DISPLAY THE SCREEN NAME OF THE PERSON LOOKING AT THE LINK ABOVE THE AVATAR. I DIDN'T KNOW THAT JAY PULLED A FAST ONE ON ME.

Not at launch, no. I'll probably put together some alternative color schemes later on, but I doubt I'll build a color editor like the current software. Too much work for a function that very few people use. If you take some screen captures of a few forum pages and send them to me (preferably in GIF, PNG, or bitmap format to maintain color accuracy), I can try to build a color scheme that mimics what you're using.

Anybody else not like the color scheme, either in the current forum or the new design? It is pretty damn bland now that I take off my developer's glasses and look at it with my designer's glasses. It's tough for me to say because I haven't had my LCDs professionally calibrated and I don't know if they're color-correct. Plus, I've always preferred muted colors.

After the Mac expenditure, I don't really have any money left over for one of their studio LCDs, which I've heard have great out-of-the-box calibration.

I like the look. Very clean and straightforward.

I'm glad that you've stuck with the same general 'feel' of the site, the same fonts etc, because I always felt it looked very cool as it was. Weird seeing that teaser actually - it was the same, but diffrent. Will take some getting used to.

HA HA! Jay make funny! Pee Wee Herman... "handy." HA HA!

No pun intended, right Jay?

I like the look, too. Will take some getting used to, but it's doable.

I'd love to see a screen capture of what you saw because it's broken in every version of IE I've tried.

Here's what it looks like in Firefox for Windows, and pretty much what it should look like in all browsers once I've finalized the browser detection and custom stylesheets. I have font smoothing turned on though, so the text will look different if you don't.

I'm using 5.5, I think (at work). I won't use anything but Firefox @ home. Looks fine.
