New HDTV Broadcasts?

Rumor has it that were new Austrian HDTV broadcasts of episodes 3 to 6 over November and December that are now making their way onto the web. Is this true?

Apparently they look better than the German broadcasts (!)    I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about this here.  Can any comment on the veracity of these claims?

Sounds interesting.

Can we have a comparison from the german broadcasts with the other HDTV versions out there?

Sluggo is officially interested.  Not for the changes, mind you.

As far as I know, there was only one matte shot that was changed.  Someone had posted screen shots somewhere here.  I have the pics on my hard drive somewhere...

ah, here they are:

Hey, off topic again!  Sorry about that.

RE: New HDTV Broadcasts?

sorry to talk about indy HD again but might be of interest to some

the previous versions of raiders had a faint blue line (print damage) visible in some scenes most notably the scene with indy and belloq in the bar it was visible on the bbcHD version and the version that was shown in UK cinemas from 2001 onwards (for the diet coke film festival iirc) it might be on the 1st release dvds though i cant remember, it has been removed fromthe re-released dvds (the ones with the kotcs extras added) now heres the thing the new sky-HD broadcasts (sky have a deal with paramount for newly struck HD classic movie premieres) have the blue line removed but still has the canyon truck falling scene from the above top picture hmmmmmm discuss

RE: New HDTV Broadcasts?

The films were transfered in HD in 2001 with the blue line because that's on the negative; the 2003 Lowry HD master either had the same problem or painted it out; the re-releases either continued to have it painted out, or if it was previously in, painted it out; this version was given to SkyHD; shortly after, the truck matte shot was re-done and given to Sci-FiHD.

That's no problem.  I mentioned Star Wars in the first post, as I heard a rumor about it, but you are not off topic, if one takes the thread title literally. :-)  I have no objection to this becoming a general thread discussing new HD broadcasts, as long as the Star Wars rumor is discussed too - so far that's what it remains...

the sky version was at least a year after the sci-fi HD version (was broadcast in august 09 iirc) but has the original truck shot not the new CG version shown on the sci fi channel! this is the sort of thing that the official sites should advertise as "news" even some of the indy fan sites didnt pick up on it (i guess its just me being sad ha ha!)

That's true, but for whatever reason they didn't use the newest Sci-Fi master, but the master from the previous releases. Maybe Sci-Fi network had an exclusive deal, or maybe Paramount was charging more money for the "enhanced" version.

Basically, as I understand it, there are three different masters: 1)The original HD version from 2001. 2) The Lowry version from 2003 without the blue line (Lowry likely painted it out). 3) The altered version from 2008.

Maybe SkyHD purchased and recieved the film before the latest enhanced version was ready but simply didn't show it until a year later. There could be many explanations, so for me it's not all that weird since the master was changing every two to three years (there might even have been a fourth master, created in 2007, if the original 2003 Lowry release did indeed have the blue line still in it).

One of the guys from digital bits claimed that the Indy blu-rays were ready to come out along with Crystal Skull, but at the last minute Spielberg stopped it because he wasn't happy with how they looked.

The new version also has very different color grading. They brightened it considerably, dialed the blue hues out, and increased the contrast a bit.

Does the version with the new truck shot look like this as well? I haven't actually seen any of these.

Gladiator blu-ray

Well, this Austrian TV broadcast thing seems to be a rumor.   Enjoy discussing Indy and other things, guys.  I'm actually finding the discussion quite interesting. :-)

Same brush, less paint!  :-)  Those Gladiator blu-rays were a disgrace.

i have never seen the scifi HD version (they dont show indy on the uk sci fi channel) but the bbchd version had the new truck shot in it and the old colour pallete so as u said there might be different 3 HD masters out there i have the bbc one somewhere and the sky one and also the japanese wowow version which is the same master as the sky one just need the scifi HD one to complete the collection! unlikely to ever see it though!

im assuming u all saw the canyon comparison vids on youtube?

i have had a look for the austrian versions but cant find anything

itv in the UK showed them in HD before christmas but they were cropped to 1:78:1 in stereo and had commercials plus no updated yoda!

RE: New HDTV Broadcasts?

Question: does the presence of the digital Yoda in Phantom Menace at the star wars concert indicate that a new master has been created for that whole movie? I know the youtube concert clips aren't the best way to judge, but the episode I clips look somehow "better" to me, while the other 5 movies basically look like the current dvds.

RE: New HDTV Broadcasts?

They were probably taken directly from the digitized 2K master that serves as the negative, since they had to be projected on a large screen. Its impossible to say if CG yoda is part of the actual master yet (since they are just random clips), but if it isn't then its safe to say it will be when they start getting it ready for the next release since it is now officially endorsed as a proper version of the scene (most likely for blu ray).
