Better a bad bomb than a bombad1989 saw "The Abyss" "Leviathan" and "Deep Star Six" all come out. Scary submarine movies, all inspired by the late 80s mania about finding the wreck of Titanic.
What other matched sets of movies came out at the same time?

Magister Pontifex MaximusIn the same vein and around the same time as each other but a decade after the late 80's batch also came Virus and Sphere (which should have been called Sfear really) and the semi-related Event Horizon.
Virus alien created cyborgs on a submarine. Sphere a giant ship found in the ocean depths, the contents of which play on fears of the discoverers, Event Horizon, a giant ship that has returned from an unknowable dimension, become self aware and plays on the fears of the discoverers.
Also around the same time Hellraiser Bloodline and Jason X took their horror film series into spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!

But the thread really should be titled "Movies in b*tches." Heck, I might just go b*tch about it in the other thread.

Better a bad bomb than a bombad"Drop Zone" / "Terminal Velocity."
Was 1994 just a good year for skydiving? Was it really becoming popular?
Trying to think of the reasons for these pairings is fun.
"Antz" and "Bugs Life" are both movies choosing the same way (insects) to hide the technical limitations of CGI at the time.
But why were volcanoes in the air in 1997? I have no idea.

Better Grumpy than DopeyIn 2004 we had Starsky & Hutch, followed by The Dukes of Hazzard in 2005 and Miami Vice in 2006. All three movies are based on TV shows; S&H finished in 1979, the same year that DoH started, and Miami Vice started in 1984 one year before DoH ended.
