Han D. SoloDream on! That would have to be 4 layer BD and as far as I know, nothing like that is commercially available yet and probably won't be any time soon, because the current players couldn't play it.

Could be, haven't really followed the situation recently but if they're developing 1TB discs I thought maybe 100GB discs would start coming. But if the players won't play them then that sucks...
And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Reginald ScumPersonally I don't give much of a damn about these movies in any way because the things they changed from the books completely screwed up the story in a lot of cases, especially from a character and 'world-building' continuity standpoint. For the sake of those who do like them, I'm glad the DVNR nonsense is being dispensed with, but I can't be arsed about caring for anything else that's going on. ;)

Have you given either our Sharkey's Purist Edition or Kerr's edits a try?

Han D. SoloSo, the blus are out and apparently even though the new FOTR transfer is much better than the old one in terms of detail but there seems to be some colour timing issues. Anybody got any closer info on it?

Dark Jedi KnightJust go over at bluray.com, and read the posts by Ken Brown, Robert Harris, Bill Hunt, and others, this IS what PJ wanted, it is approved, the screen shots that were posted weeks before the release have been grossly exaggerated to say the least, this version is the best to date, it looks wonderful.
rent the set and check it out for yourselves, it really does look very nice.

Han D. SoloYeah, I saw some pictures and the clarity is awesome compared to the theatrical version but I didn't much like the colours. But it is quite possible that those screens were exaggerated on purpose. And after what we've seen with STAR WARS, the argument that colour timing was approved by the director means very little to me. I was hoping someone could post actual TE vs EE comparison screenshots from the actual blu-rays (ideally some well chosen pics representative of various sequences).

Dark Jedi KnightI have to look, I don't watch the TE, but I do have it on Blu, I like the EE loads better for all 3 films, but according to all sources online, the EE is exactly how PJ wanted it, so all these people supposedly holding out for a Disc replacement program, I wouldn't hold my breath.

There is, however, a significant difference between LOTR and the OT. LOTR had loads of color-grading applied to it to begin with. Scenes were tinted every which way on purpose, from the get-go.

True this is. The EE I still prefer and annoy me these supposed colour changes will. Perhaps still jumpy about Lucas am I...
This new version I must see before a conclusion I can come to.

Meh, I like the theatrical cuts better anyway.
However, people who enjoy the extended editions should have the right to see it the way it's supposed to be.

I've been reading some stuff about the EE being on two discs. I think that even if a BD has room enough to store the whole movie as long as the EE, there are two things that are mixing here into the final decission of splitting them.
One is the possibility of offering a better quality final product, with a higher bitrate and stuff. In spite off being very well known and successful, I guess Peter Jackson still cares for his movies (I can't tell whether he does for interest or because he's a LOTR fan himself).
The other thing that I think influenced the decission of having the movies in two discs is that EE are mainly made for LOTR fans. The content tries to be closer to the books (well... you know) and I think the packaging and organisation of the set of discs intended to mirror that. For every book of LOTR, JRR Tolkien established two "books" as subdivisions. Therefore if you read Fellowship of the Rings, you'll have Book I and II, TTT books III and IV and ROTK books V and VI. So I guess the possibility of offering the movies in two discs each is a nice wink to that.

I'm a little at odds with meself on the issue. Obviously switching discs sucks. On the one hand, the movies are quite long and the thought that I wouldn't have to get up sometime during the movie is nearly preposterous. And the thought of increased bit-rate is quite tempting...
But seriously? A 50 GB disc isn't enough for a 3.5 hour movie? Or a 3.67 hour movie? Or a 7 hour movie?
The worst part for me: Last the Mrs. and I watched LotR:EE, we watched it with no regard to the "starting" or "stobbing" of individual movies. We watched an hour or two each night and found a breaking point wherever was convenient. With 2 disc swaps over 11 hours, the chances of resuming the movie(s) just prior to a disc swap are fairly low. With 5 discs swaps over the same- Well the chances are two-and-a-half times higher!
Oh, the horror!

Better Grumpy than DopeyI wouldn't trust screenshots from VLC, or any other media player for that matter - how can you be sure the guy hasn't fiddled with the hue and saturation controls before grabbing the screenshots?
We had similar confusion a few years back with someone posting screenshots taken from PowerDVD with some "vivid" setting enabled, that blew out all the whites.
