Hi. I'm working on a web site with Charley Lippincott.
In 1976, after the Nov. screening in San Anselmo, Fox made two trailers for Star Wars. One was made by Charley Lippincott & Lucasfilm, the other by Fox. I think the CL/LFL trailer is referred to as the original. It uses the same logo that is found on the press kit and Kenner toys.
The 2nd one uses the triangular shaped Star Wars font from tghe Tommy Jung poster. Its narration begins with "Twentieth Century Fox and George Lucas bring you..." There is a trailer on the net described as as the first 1977 Star Wars, but is not the first version of Fox's trailer as the 11/76 trailer was done before John Williams finished his soundtrack.
This is the trailer I am looking for. The Fox trailer (not original) without Williams soundtrack. It runs a little less than 2:00 minutes

The second one has a 'File Name' category, so if you think the one you are looking for matches then it can be supplied.
I didn't know the differences in who made the trailers. Why would both companies make trailers at the same time? The description of the trailer you are looking for matches the 78 re-release until you mention the lack of Williams soundtrack.
There are a bunch of people familiar with the trailers, they'll hopefully chime in.

yavasizadooI think the music used was Gustav Holst's "The Planets (Mars)" I actually think I have this on 8mm, but I don't have a projector to run it. ;-P

That's the one I'm referring to (but the top link sounds like it has PAL speedup). The narrator sounds like it may be Malachi Throne (who also narrated the The Story of Star Wars LP).

Really? Years ago, I was told by someone on this site that is was Holst's "Mars." I guess I'll have to listen to it again.

Joliet JakeHolst's "Mars" was used as a temp track for the actual movie, specifically the first shot of the Blockade Runner and the Star Destroyer, before John Williams composed any of his scores. I would guess the movie at that point was still at workprint stage.
"Winter" may not be easy to recognize like this, I suggest speeding up the video up to roughly 140% or 150%.

Problem is the original poster is looking for a different trailer:

I haven't seen this one, fairly certain it hasn't made any home video release. If they return hopefully they can specify what audio was part of the cut. Their description sounds like the 1978 trailer just with different music.

yavasizadooIt would seem that the trailer in post #3 would be earlier than any trailer with the Tommy Jung logo, since that trailer just used a standard font - not even one of the earliest SW logos. :-/

I guess that's where the confusion came in. Whoever told me that, must have assumed the temp track music was also used for the trailer.
