Looking bad in your own autobiography

Cleaning my garage I found a couple books. "Samwise" actor Sean Astin's "There and Back Again" and pro wrestler Bill Goldberg's "Who's Next."

Both these books stood out to me, because they're autobiographies where the author manages to blythly make themselves look absolutely terrible, apparently unintentionally.

Sean Astin is a complete self-important tool who somehow seems unaware of what a tool he is. His anecdotes include how Brendan Frasier is lazy because he doesn't like working more than 10 hour days, how Orlando Bloom is lazy because he asked a PA to get him a sandwhich on the set of LOTR, and how Sean acosted Orlando at the Cannes Festival because Orlando waved at him from across the street without enough enthusiasm. It's just page after page of how serious and hard working Sean Astin is and how nothing is good enough to match his work ethic and ideals.

Bill Goldberg's book isn't much of a read. He was a failed football player whose pro rasslin career was really only about 3 years long. The thing is he doesn't seem to realize that pro wrestling isn't a real sport... even though he did it for a living. He really thinks he's king badass of the universe. He was a good-guy wrestler, and talks about his genuine hate at bad-guy wrestlers who made fun of him in order to rile of the crowd.  He brags about threatening them backstage and using his political clout to harm their careers. The guy comes off as some sort of man-child or psycho in his own autobiography.

Reading these actually effected my enjoyment of these people's work.  Whenever I watch LOTR I can't help but think "that Sean Astin sure is a tool."

But I would never look bad in my own autobiography.

It would be lies, start to finish, but I wouldn't look bad.

I had a copy of Leslie Nielson's autobiography. Signed even. It was literally all lies. I don't remember how funny it was, but it was mostly him rubbing shoulders with celebrities he's obviously never met, and so on.
