Dark Jedi KnightSee to me that is way to much, but to each there own right, Luke doesn't look like a white guy anymore in them shots, I think it is cool what you are "trying" to do, but just way overboard in my opinion, sorry for my opinion, I won't post anymore because you are going in the wrong direction to me, so I won't keep repeating myself LOL.
Good luck with your color adventure lee, but as I said before, there are some here that like that radical approach, I am just not one of them.

"Untallented and clueless to the core"you settings are a bit too extreme. R2's blue is so oversaturated that it's what is causing the undesired colour bleeding around his panels. It's also destroying the skin tones and its a little too green shifted in some areas. I'm sorry to say but Lukes face in Ben's hut looks horrendous. It seems as if you have darkened the shaded areas of the skin tones and made them look very unnatural. If you are going by the technicolor screen shots you should be able to see how different yours looks. It's still possible to get the GOUT to look resemble the technicolor prints, but you just need to ease off your settings.

Dark Jedi KnightI wasn't going to comment again, but since you asked, yes your new correction looks a little better, but you can't judge the whole film on just 1 pic.

"Untallented and clueless to the core"That does look a lot better now. Don't rely too much on those technicolor pictures because the levels etc seem to vary quite a bit, which is natural if you are attempting to capture something off a cinema screen without correctly setting the white balance and exposure prior to doing this. The only way to truly know what the correct colours of star wars is would be have a professionally scanned copy of the movies, from different prints with nothing done to them and then make a comparison

"Hooch IS crazy!"Thanks Video Collector I really appreciate the encouragement! ;)
Here are some more comparisons of the raw GOUT vs my latest colour grade:

Only now when I compare this colour grade with what I had before can I see just how extreme they were. LOL This is why I need feedback because its so easy to become blind-sighted on a project like this.

The problem is where would you draw the line? How long would it be before correcting the unwanted side effects would lead to a scene by scene correction?
As I said in the other thread, having different settings for each reel might be a more reasonable solution than having different settings for each scene.
But I think it's looking pretty great, considering that it's the GOUT.

aka PancakesThe crawl is still a little too green. You can see on the vectorscope that it's not going toward yellow, but toward the guide line underneath yellow, which means it's mostly yellow with some green.
I don't know that I'd recommend going directly toward yellow, but there definitely needs to be a bit less green there.
Other than that, it all looks very good!

Joliet JakeHave we got a reference for what exact shade of yellow of the crawl text should be?
... And they had 'The Empire Strikes Back', the fifth of the four Star Wars films. He is fucking with us numerically, isn't he! "Children, count up to ten." "Four, five, six, one, two, three, ten". No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, squawk squawk squawk... who needs a punch up the bracket!"

Farewell - the incessant moaning & childish behavior on here has gotten beyond a joke.....Wow those shots look even better than before - bravo!
It's almost worth doing the whole film with those settings, and just re-colouring the title crawl, if need-be. Lest we forget that the opening crawl plus first shot of the SD flying overhead from the GOUT is from a different source to the rest of the film (i.e. the spliced in original pre-episode IV crawl), so it's probably not surprising that portion would be out compared to the rest of the transfer. I doubt Lucasfilm did much - if anything - to match it to the rest of the GOUT, given their track record with this release...

Jedi KnightThe crawl will always look green. This is because that shot is not red shifted like the rest of film, so it just gets the green boosted. That shot is tacked on to the GOUT so it doesn't have the red problem. So, get the crawl right and the rest of the film won't look correct if you are just using one setting. I would say, do a custom setting for the crawl and leave the rest of the film the way you have it.

"When George went back and put new creatures into the original Star Wars, I find that disturbing. It’s a revision of history. That bothers me."

You know it's gotta be a hack job when even the fans can tell 2 different sources were used for the same crappy transfer......makes you wonder if the upcoming Bluray releases will be more of this same shoddy workmanship to fool the masses with.
It always makes me wonder if all GL's verbal subterfuge and re-editing of everything including his own words regarding his life, the history of all his films, and everything last thing connected to them is just due to him not wanting to share creative credit, monetary credit, or the joy with anyone but himself....and maybe Spielberg.....so sad.

"Hooch IS crazy!"Thanks for all the feedback everyone! :D I will see what I can do about the crawl but other then that I would say this colour grade is finished! :)
I just have one more VTS to run through AviSynth tonight and then I will be ready to take the whole film into Color and apply the colour grading.

Slayer of DeaditesThe color correction looks wonderful. Although, I do hope that you have the time to do the crawl separately. It does stand out from the GOUT. If you need a reference for color of the crawl, try the Empire of Dreams documentary. That footage looked quite nice.

Jedi KnightI agree that the lastest version of the color correction looks way better than the previous setting used. The skins tones still have an odd darkness in some scenes, but are ok in other scenes, but that can't be fixed unless scene-by-scene adjustments are made to correct for that.
Overall it's very nice, and much closer to the original vibrant film colors than the GOUT. :)

"Hooch IS crazy!"Dunedain, thanks for the feedback. :D
So I started rendering the colour corrected version last night and man it is taking sooooo much longer this time! Previously my iMac would render out the whole film at 576p overnight, at 2k or 2x576p its taken over night just to do up to the end of the garage scene! I hope this is a good sign that the end result will be a better quality than previously. :)
Before I do a DVD release what I thought I might do is upload a H.264 MKV to the newsgroup that people can download and watch then feedback over how the colour correction looks in motion and if there are any problems of glitches I might have missed. This way I can try and fix them before I do the final release in the form of a DVD9 image.

Here is a question for you all. As a percentage how accurate/close to the colour timing of the Technicolor print would you say ANH from the '97SE is? Not taking the pinkness of Mos Eisley into account. ;)

In the theater it was very close to it in the scenes that were left intact I guess, but on video it's not, impossible to say, it's not only Mos Eisley that have a pink shift, there's also a heavy blue shift in some scenes, combined with lousy contrast levels. But some scenes do look damn good, just like I remember it, but they are few. Sad but true.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

"Hooch IS crazy!"So while I've been waiting for things to render etc, I've been reading through the user guide for Color to see if there was anything I could do to further improve the results I was getting. As it turns out the way I was achieving some of the colour corrections was not the best or recommended way but then I guess thats what you get when you don't read the instructions, so I went back, initially to try and modify the colour grade I already had however in the end it was easier to start over. The following are screenshots from the first half of Star Wars using this new grade, let me know what you think. :)
