Only four more episodes of Firefly to go, plus the movie and the reunion special.

*sigh*

The bots are getting conversational.... Weirdness. Anyways last night I caught the live stream of the latest WRTR round. Totally thought that Gaffer Tape was trying to subtly get his contestant to review Princess Leia by picking "Disney Princesses" as the topic but I was wrong.
EditAlso the audio is much improved from before.

The last tv show I watched was Switched at Birth the recent episode. Can't wait until the next episode where it's going to be like a silent film kind of thing by going off of the perspective of the Deaf characters. I also hate where they're taking Regina's character. I mean it's written well but I don't want her character to go down that road. :-(

The last Black Mirror story of the year The Waldo Moment was a bit lighter than than the other two but it delivered a hell of a punch in the coda.

American Sign Language?

Oh.

RE: Last web series/tv show seen

It would have made sense if there was a universal sign language.

That way deaf people would have an advantage over all other people as they could communicate with people of other nations without having to learn a new language.

STANDARDISE EVERYTHING!

Yep American Sign Language. Like thishttp://i.imgur.com/tTSdpWA.gif
I watched it last night. It was like watching metropolis or other classic silent films. They had background music while the rest was presented through sign. It was a great episode too. There's only one plot flaw in the episode that might be resolved in the next episode so not counting it yet.

While I don't entirely agree with "standardising everything" it does suck that there's not some kind of language that's considered "basic" for people to learn. I mean there's the IPA but that doesn't have a language to go along with it. It's just a means of letting linguists know how to write other languages down that don't have a script. Would be awesome if in schools around the world it was a requirement to learn "basic" as well. Even if lots of people suck at "basic" it'd at least be a communication start.

Everyone should learn sign language that way they can have conversations in noisy nightclubs and chat across a busy street without having to shout themselves silly.

You'd think it would work, but here's my argument against it. Not that I don't love the idea.
IMHO It's really difficult to "tune out" the other language, be it verbal or non verbal. I've tried to and it's really confusing to me, trying to listen to whatever I have on headphones in english, while in some other room the tv is blasting at full volume in italian.

... And they had 'The Empire Strikes Back', the fifth of the four Star Wars films. He is fucking with us numerically, isn't he! "Children, count up to ten." "Four, five, six, one, two, three, ten". No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, squawk squawk squawk... who needs a punch up the bracket!"

Now that's a language I have no problem understanding.

Noo! Then deaf people would become emboldened and attempt to build a tower to heaven or something equally crass and God would have to confound their sign language to keep them from working together against him. And all that work of building a universal sign language would be for nothing.

Dr Carol Marcus says :

Lets get this straight, a universal sign language shouldn't exist because if an almighty deity took offense and broke it it wouldn't exist?

If India Pale Ale had a language to go on long with it, you can bet I'd learn it!

RE: Last web series/tv show seen

UK telly drama is continuing to be chronically disturbing.

In The Flesh is the freshest spin of the undead since Romero.

Some years after a Zombie outbreak (they eat the living but don't spread any infection) a cure has been found and the now re-humanised undead are being re-introduced into a society with fresh memories of the cannibal atrocities they committed during the rising. They too have to deal with returning memories of what they did before being 'medicated'.

It's really creepy and ties into everything from the aftermath of civil wars like the troubles in Northern Ireland, HIV infection and radicalised religion (with both the undead and living turning to extremes of faith).

It's really worth a watch, uneasy watching but much more rewarding than The Walking Dead has been for a long while.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993-1999)

I came into the show late when it originally aired and only caught a few. I had no idea what was going on and didn't bother to stay with it. Now I wish I had caught the whole thing from the beginning. This was a great show and a breath of fresh air. It made TNG feel cold and impersonal in comparison. The series finale was really bittersweet. This is definitely my favorite series after TOS.

I could never get over that awful din of unnecessary incidental music.

I wish the DVDs/blu-Rays gave you the option to switch it off.

And it did feel like a rip-off of Babylon 5 in the same way that B5 felt a bit too much like a pastiche of Lord Of The Rings.

Firefly.

...

Not that I'm at all surprised, but it was fantastic.  A show that throws all sorts of things into a blender and the whole that comes out is better than the sum of its parts.

11/10.
