"I goddamn near lost my nose. I like it. I like breathing through it. And I still think you're hiding something."-best Jack line ever.
I have that movie on DVD. When they remastered it, they actually did it with respect. This movie looks like it was made in the 90's now. I am glad they used the good remaster for TV. How come a certain science fiction movie can't get the same respect.

Magister Pontifex MaximusJust seen The Mist, now I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it but I have to applaud the ending.
It takes almost every Hollywood resolution and turns them upside down.
Grueling stuff too (like the Doctor Who episode Midnight it borrows more than a bit from Lifeboat but there's nothing wrong with that).
It could have done with hiding the things a bit more (more shadows more mist) but that's just a minor quibble.

Magister Pontifex MaximusIt kind of ties in with the discussion over on the ESB:R thread as I've discovered the binaural audio drama version which is rather unsettling too.
I wish I could get into making something like that.

Child is the Father of the ManWatched The Pagemaster for the first time in... 12 years or so. It holds up as an entertaining kid's movie, but Macaulay Culkin is really annoying - not like that's surprising. The movie's characters aren't drawn the best, but the backgrounds are done really well.

I would take either of them over Johnathan Taylor Thomas.
For some reason I liked Hayley Joel Osment. I guess because Second Hand Lions was so enjoyable.

Magister Pontifex MaximusFurther to my comments on the Denholm Elliott Dracula a page back, I've slowly been working my way through the Mystery And Imagination DVD set it is on and the other stories so far have more than made up for the disappointment.
As well as an interesting take on Frankenstein with Ian Holm playing both the creator and creation in the tale (is this a first?) and the fore-mentioned Uncle Silas I was treated to this very evening a rather fun version of Jewel Of The Seven Stars and a gloriously fruity adaptation of The Suicide Club starring the sadly missed but always a joy to behold Bernard Archard as the club president.
If you get a chance to get your hands on this collection of largely forgotten television classics you are in for a rare treat.

Jedi KnightStar Trek 2009.
Liked it enough as an action Flick, dissapointed in it as a star trek film.
Still better by far than the Lucash prequels.

That's just my opinion, and to be fair, there are two Dracula adaptaions I havent seen yet (Dernhelm Elliot and Jack Palance as the Count).
The real surprise however was the first half of the much derided Patrick Bergin modern version (the second half goes right of the rails). I dreaded putting the disc into my player after hearing how awful it was and the second half is pretty awful but the first part wasn't that bad.
Even though it's updated to the present it keeps reasonably close to the source material though the acting isn't very top drawer.
I'll have to give the Patrick Bergin one a shot. I've always avoided it up until now.

Magister Pontifex Maximus^Heed my warning though about the second half (utter bobbins) but the first half is worth a bite.
In a similar vein tonight I watched Ravenous for the first time.
It looks lovely and has some fine performances but I would have preferred if the film had trod a middle ground between a supernatural and a psychological stance.
A bit of armour here (as an alternate explanation for a particular scene) and a few scenes shifted around or framed differently and the final act more decisively reworked and it could have been a great little film.
The tacked on humor in the titles and pre-titles doesn't fit the rest of the film either.
A prime candidate for a fan-edit if someone can find the right sort of material and work around the gaps left by taking away the more OTT elements and off kilter titles.
The better half hated it and was rather put out at any defense of the film I attempted to muster.

Jedi KnightThat was a good way to ruin both the Fantastic Four franchise and insure no movie for Silver Surfer ever gets made.
They are set to reboot or remake Fantastic Four.
Hopefully this time they follow Jack Kirby's original and have an actress who can act and not just look good. Alba was painfully awful to watch when she opened her mouth. In she stayed silent for those 2 films they would have been better, lol.
I had wished that Marvel would get the rights back to Spider-man, fantastic four and x-men, not so sure now that disney owns marvel.
I'm already seeing something awful like the X-men meet Hannah Montana.

OT's bucketbot^One thing they did right with that version was Doom's face. Looked great. I have an old sci-fi magazine from around the time the movie was finished and there's a great promo shot of him that looks like it's right out of a comic.
