Belloq, very good ideas here. Looking forward to seeing the clips.

As for the Mutt swinging on the vine bit, have you seen the edit that does away with the vines all together. In it, Mutt leaps into the jeep with the skull, the skull falls into Ox's hands (using the clip from earlier in the scene) then Mutt falls onto the floorboard of the jeep next to Indy (where he originally landed after swinging from the vine). Works well.

Hi Belloq,

Did you find a new place to post your videos?

Is this still being worked on?  If not, I'm going to move ahead with my planned edit.

What ever happened with this? Did the effort move to another forum?

I wish someone would make an attempt.  I rewatched this film a couple weeks back, now with my lowered expectations... and found it to be even worse than I remembered.

The fan editor in my head screamed at me that there wasn't a shred of good film to be teased out of it.

I look forward to anyone taking a stab at this.

Hey Doctor M,

The project appears to be continuing over at fanedit.org

TV's Frink,

I'm downloading the Essential Edition right now, but I can't find the other edit of Indy 4 there that has been released.

Ooh, and it's from Jorge.  One of the few true-fanedit editors I really respect.  I have seen him polish a t**d until it glitters.

I'll be giving that edit a watch.

Jorge did a very short version of Indy4. It doesn't really have an usual Indiana Jones feeling to me, BUT it's an intersting take. Just don't take it as the "ultimate" Indy 4 fanedit and you might like it. :)

Jorge has impressed me in the past, fixing movies I thought unfixable.

I'd give the other edit a try, but whoever it was largely cut the parts I liked and left in ones I hated.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about the Q2 cut so far. Way too much awkward stuff that should have been cut out of the intro scenes was left in.

Hey Fink,

Well, you're certainly entitled to your opinion :)

I just think that there's a whole lot of horrible, awkward stuff in the opening scenes, as well as some stuff that just doesn't make any sense in light of the rest of the movie, that should have been cut from the intro.

One example is the fact that Spalko shows up and gives Indy her name, rank, list of medals, and a description of her supposed ESP powers, then Indy calls her by name in the warehouse, but in the FBI interrogation he asks who she is and has to try to help the FBI identify her by giving a half-assed description. Umm ... why not just give them her name and rank? Better to have removed the part where she reveals her identity and where Indy calls her by name. It CAN be done without messing up the flow of the film.

Another thing is that Indy suddenly knows exactly what Spalko is looking for in the warehouse when she mentions "mummified remains", then in the FBI interrogation, he asks the FBI what was in the box, then they ask him to tell them what was in the box and he does, but then he repeats the question, "What was in the box?!" It's nonsense.

It also would be way better if the audience doesn't see the remains that Spalko is looking it, so some mystery is retained until it is revealed to Indy in the camp later in the movie. The way the movie was originally, and still is in Q2's edit, everybody in the movie and in the audience knows pretty much exactly what was in the box, but somehow Indy and the audience are supposed to be surprised or impressed when it is revealed later in the camp. Again ... nonsense.

Also, I don't think color adjustments to his edit were drastic enough. With some other working drafts of scenes I've seen for other edits, the color was 100 times better, noticeably, even without a side-by-side comparison. To me, without a side-by-side comparison, I hardly notice much of a difference to the color in the Q2 edit up to the point I'm at. It all still looks too dreamy to me.

Anyway, that's just my take on what I've seen so far.

Take care,
Ryan

Sorry about that Frink. I knew something didn't look right there :)

I do certainly like the AVCHD aspect of Q2's edit. I guess I've just spent so much time planning out the edits for this movie that I have a specific idea of how best to cut it, though currently not the ability to do so, and there's certain stuff ... little stuff sort of (in addition to the obvious stuff) ... that I really hate about this movie and would like to see taken out.

Unfortunately, I ended up turning Jorge's edit off part way through.  I didn't feel like it was a real improvement, and I noticed some weird continuity errors right up front.

I think the best edit for this film, is to cut it out of your DVD collection.

Shia blames Spielberg (he doesn't like Transformers 2 either) the Elephant has now filled the room :

Really?  I think on the list of people most responsible for this sucking Shia was at the bottom of my list.

Lucas: For the crap story, crap plot points, crap action scenes...  Changing the time period of the film to the 50's and the style away from classic serials.

Spielberg: For his crap directing and overuse of CG.

Ford: For looking like an old man... ok I guess that's not his fault.  How about for not putting his foot down.  He has to know a lousy movie when he's making it by now.

Makeup people: FOR MAKING FORD LOOK LIKE AN OLD MAN.  Really, a little color in his face and some hair dye would have done wonders for the film's believability.

Karen Allen: For grinning like an idiot the whole movie.  It's called acting, you used to know how it was done.

Shia LeBeouf: For being an overused actor in Hollywood for no particular reason...

No that's about right, Shia is at the bottom of my list of people at fault.

Hey Doctor M,

The irony about Ford looking old in KotCS is that if you watch his interviews in the special features where he's wearing the khaki shirt he wears in the film, he looks about 10 years younger than he does at the worst points of the film. In those interviews, he looks like 5-10 years have passed since Last Crusade rather than 20 years. When the cinematographer makes your talent look WORSE than they actually look, it's time to find a new cinematographer. Of course, that was hardly Kaminski's only fault in this film.

Who did Shia boff to get where he is today anyway?

He must know where some of the bodies are buried because he seems to get a lot of work with very little talent, unremarkable looks and no screen presence at all.

Hayden's career hasn't really gone anywhere but this guy pops up as regularly as a fake Windows trojan alert on an unprotected PC.

Well the difference is that Shia can actually act (not great, but better than a lot his age) while Hayden is wooden whether he's with Lucas or not.  And "Shattered Glass," his one decent performance, is not enough to prove to me he is a good actor.
