likes ice creamThe title should read John Carter of Mars. I didn't see any topics or posts on this apologies if it's already been mentioned.
Here's the trailer.
I'm very underwhelmed by it but thought it was worth a mention because of the strong Attack of the Clones visuals (and yes, I do realise the novels this is based on existed a long time before AOTC)

This wins the "Understatement of The Day" award.
It left me wondering: When is John gonna turn to the darkside?**
** Keep in mind that I have never read any of the books, AND had never heard of it, until now.

Summer of 69erI think I'm gonna skip this movie until I read the books - if I ever read the books.

My Heather Langenkamp avatar has decided to go on an extended vacation and may not be back for sometime. Not to worry, though, for she will be back - eventually.

Wait for me. I shall be merciful and quick. That's a terrible trailer. The teaser was better. It's directed by the guy who wrote and directed Wall•E so I'm definitely looking forward to it. The series is a classic. Especially the first book the Princess of Mars which was Edgar Rice Burroughs first novel and what the film is based on. I've always wanted to read them and with the film coming up now is definitely the time. As someone on Youtube put it:
If you believe the likes of Roddenberry and Lucas (to name a few) weren't influenced by Burroughs' work, you ought to read this book.

Magister Pontifex MaximusEven if the plot points are similar the film didn't need to look so AOTC.
Look at Lynch's Dune.
Say what you like about it, it doesn't look remotely like Star Wars despite Lucas ripping off huge chunks of surface detail from the books.
Say goodbye, to all this and "hello" to Jason Issacs.

Wait for me. I shall be merciful and quick.Well except for the fact that it takes place on Mars so of course everything is going to be orange and a coliseum is a coliseum. =P

Magister Pontifex MaximusYeah but it doesn't have to look like the same coliseum and the Barsoomians don't have to look so Geonosian (even if the notion of a space coliseum filled with multi-limbed creatures is straight out of John Carter).
Say goodbye, to all this and "hello" to Jason Issacs.

Wait for me. I shall be merciful and quick. Not that far in the book so I can't comment on how it's described there but the Barsoomians seem to be pretty faithful to how the book describes except for the fact that they should probably be bulkier and a darker green. Though it's hard to tell from the trailers they do seem to be about as tall as they're described in the book.

of Earth.I can't be the only one here who has seen this... What did you think?
I thought it was fantastic! I understand that not everyone is the audience for it... but if you're reading this, I'm guessing you're the target audience.
I've never read the novels, so I can't compare there. It's possible it will offend the purists. But since most of you aren't JCoM purists, you'll probably enjoy it as much as I did.
If you don't go see it, I might have to start IGNORING you. Yes, that tactic went over like a lead balloon with Inception. But it's back, baby!

For those that didn't know, you can get "Movie Cash" to go see it from DisneyMovieRewards.com. You have to buy/have the "Movie Magic Code" from a short list of movies. I already had one of them and bought another BD for $10 and saw John Carter "for free".

Are there any articles which compare/contrast this movie with the recent Tracy Lords 'Princess of Mars' from the Sci-Fi channel of 2009?

I am ready for the trials!Haven't seen the Disney version yet. I did see about half of the SciFi version, and it was pretty awful. The alien makeup was literally falling off an actor's face in some shots.
They also managed to make the most iconic movie location of all time look drab and uninteresting.
It's sad some people have no idea how many stories and films have taken their inspiration from Edgar Rice Burroughs' source material. Disney is probably in shock over getting edged out at the box office by yet another Dr. Seuss movie, and yet another joke fest based on an old tv show.
Meanwhile, that teeny bopper Running Man clone I never even heard of prior to a couple weeks ago, is probably going to gross even more obscene amounts of money than all of them. ;)

Just got back from seeing it a little while ago. What a great movie! This was everything the prequels should have been. Best movie I've seen in a while.
I wanted to bump this thread but since I was the last to post in it I didn't want to double post. =P It didn't do so well domestically but it did very well overseas. To date it's grossed about $179,327,248 worldwide. I'd say it's looking like it'll make its money back. I plan on seeing it again as well and I've heard the same from multiple people.

Just saw it. In a new premium theater.
The CGI of the creatures was fantastic! The closest to utterly real I've seen. I completely bought into their reality. Backgrounds worked well as a desert environment. I couldn't tell whether it was all CGI or some digitally enhanced footage. Those CGI guys have come a long way.
The score was magnificent on the premium system!

I am ready for the trials!I finally saw it tonight. It was now or never to see it in IMAX. I really liked it. I think CGI has finally reached the point where creatures look like they're really there on the set. Definitely going to see it again, probably in 2D if I can find it.
And that dog creature almost stole the movie. :)
