From what I can make out it wasn't taken away because it was lightsaber shaped but because it was telescopic.

Lots of people have telescopic canes, especially blind people.

It's like taking someone's eyes away because they look a bit like hand grenades.

I love Peter Mayhew, but I think his Chewy playing days are over unfortunately.

Chewie is older so I can't see why Peter can't keep playing him.

He we rarely see him actually run and they could use a stunt double for that.

Right. it's the same for the entire cast. Whatever signs of age the original actors bring is easily explained because they are the same age as the characters in the film. If Peter has bad legs now, why shouldn't Chewie?
