the people that post here.  You're all stand-up folks, and you make this place feel like a real community as opposed to a place for fanboys to come and circle-jerk each other about the ridiculous minuitae of the films and the EU.
.

CA said it. Sure, there are occasional times where I wonder why we discuss something, but I would wager that 95% of the community rolls their eyes when people talk about Star Wars as perfect. It's nice to see how even in a community dedicated to one movie series people can have so vastly different opinions and debate - or even see the most die-hard fan get educated by a newcomer. That's what's fun about OT.com, in the Star Wars sense: we all have our own visions, our own dreams about what the series is. Oh, and discussing other topics (such as film in general) is always good.

Or it could just be that I'm a man dictated by habit and can't stop coming. Yeah, it's probably that.

Wow, I didn't know your Star Wars Universe was literally just the movie until recently. That must seem incredible, to have your canon so much bigger now. I envy you, but I always have.

It's fantastic to have it so much bigger and I have this board to thank for it. That was a damn 20-year dry spell.  What's also great to me is that my canon has almost zero involvement or influence from Lucas.  The film and some of the characters are him, but the radio version is much deeper.  He was hands-off because he'd sold the rights to it.

The Daley books are equally fantastic.  Much like this board - because Daley wasn't made to (or even allowed to) shoehorn the stories into George's world - the stories end up being better because they aren't bogged down by Lucasfilm. They have room to breath. Splinter was written as the sequel, by the ghost writer of the Star Wars novel, so it has the feel of that original universe before the shrinking began.

To paraphrase Dr. Eldon Tyrell - my canon is more Star Wars than Star Wars.  It's that way because it was written by two very talented authors and free of George's fingerprints.

Regarding being envious.  It wasn't hard work at all.  In fact it came naturally.  I was disappointed by some of Empire, so at the time it was just a sequel film I wasn't super crazy about.  I did own a LD of it for a while.**  It wasn't a 6-film mega media empire yet.   It was just a film and its sequel, so it was easy to dismiss it. A few years later I was so disgusted with Return, that the goodbye was a cake walk. One great film, two sequels that I found disappointing.  probably happens all the time, to lots of people.

The further distancing was just a product of the passage of time.  As you get older, you prioritize much more efficiently.  Judging by your picture, you seem to be in your twenties.  It's a safe bet that when you're my age 25 years from now, a great many things will have fallen by the wayside because other things, more important & more meaningful, will have replaced them.

I guess in simpler terms, I'm not at war with the franchise.  I like a small corner of it and I've completely ignored the rest. That mental energy is put to much better use - motorcycles, baseball, wine, and beekeeping.

**Actually, I still own a copy of Empire and Return.  I have that Definitive Collection box set that originally led me to this board.  Sitting in a closet somewhere I think.

Kev, you're one of the people I was thinking about specifically when I decided to post the question.  You and I are probably the extremes at either end of the age spectrum here, yet neither of us is ever given grief about it.  In fact, it's a non-issue.  I find that interesting, as well as very telling of how this isn't a normal web forum.  The discussions take priority, not some sort of perceived pecking order.

I know this is better left to your "Putting Faces to Names" thread, but seriously dude, are you actually this badass? I mean, going off your new profile pic I can totally see that face casually standing in a swarm of bees, on a motorcycle, drinking from a bottle of wine while hitting a home run.

There was a thread about Uncle Owen vs Ben Kenobi, but I think there should be one about Uncle Owen vs Anchorhead.

Hah, I was about to say something very similar. ^ somebody needs to paint a portrait of this.

His name was Anchorhead, seven feet tall he was with arms like tree trunks. His eyes were like steel: cold, hard....

I knew about this place for a bit before I signed up. It was an interest in Fanedits - particularly SW:ANH that really led me here and at around that time Zigfried was running rampant - but like a trainwreck you just couldn't turn away.

Then Adywan started discussing plans for Star Wars: Revisited and I found myself logging in more and more often. Now I generally check in any time I get online. which can be several times a day.

I rarely start new topics, just floating around like a leaf on the wind keeping tabs on everyone and having a bit of fun.

There was very briefly the usual membership duration pecking order assumed by a few members on here but I think that's gone now.

Most people would get the same response on day one of posting that they would on day umpty thrumpty zillion.

From what I can tell, it's unusual to find a forum where any perceived negativity (or just harmless goofing) about the forum's topic isn't taken way too personally. Like a religion. "What? Haven't you heard the good news of your savior??" Except the savior is that new watery-looking Sy snootles. Thank Mola Ram for ot.com.

... and just as I go and check Google for the meaning of doobie, this is what comes up:

well, this explains a lot.

... And they had 'The Empire Strikes Back', the fifth of the four Star Wars films. He is fucking with us numerically, isn't he! "Children, count up to ten." "Four, five, six, one, two, three, ten". No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, squawk squawk squawk... who needs a punch up the bracket!"

I came here for the same reason a lot of others did.  I used to prefer the '97 SE's, and found the prequels to be at least acceptable to some degree, but once it really sunk in how far Lucas' disdain for the original movies actually went, and that the butchered 2004 versions were meant to replace all others, suddenly the 'real' movies took on a whole new level of importance as I rediscovered them.  The quest for high quality preservations also triggered an interest in the technical aspects of movies, which I probably wouldn't have thought much about otherwise.

So really, I owe quite a lot to the existence of this forum and the people who make it what it is.  It would be easier to just not care and buy into the party line, but ultimately I find it rewarding to reject the revisionist crap that has piled up and just think about the context of Star Wars the way I did when I was young.  Thank goodness there are others who feel the same way.
I'm so lazy, I waited for someone to say my thoughts, so hairy, you're the "winner". ;-) I love the concept behind Revisited (obviously) and making what the SEs should have been, but honestly I've never been into the preservation side of these boards just yet. Something about Harmy's HD reconstructions is getting me excited, but I guess I still have some kind of subconscious hope that Lucas (or his company) will come to his senses and release the OOT...

Nah.  I'm just a fella.  Riding forever, baseball passion forever, love wine, and beekeeping? - no big deal.  Besides, my girls love me....

^ Lovely Bees.

I always go out of my way to gently lift them off the pavement when the weather takes a sudden turn and put them onto a leaf or something (no guarantee of safety but at least they aren't going to get stamped on).

Unfortunately insects find me bizarrely attractive (the time I had a live fly trapped in my ear...).

Holmes would be proud (if he was real).

Excellent!

Sudden changes can sometimes disorient a bee, particularly if she's far from the hive.  It's also possible she's just near the end of her life and unable to fly back.  Either way, I applaud your kindness because I do the same - with all insects.

RE: "I am wondering.....why are you here?"

I just checked, and I've been a member here for almost 6 years! Wow.

I was originally attracted to OT.com by OCP Movie and his various projects (Deleted Magic, Classic Editions). I had already been interested in fan edits - I had the VCDs of the Phantom Edit. The whole drama of the 2004 DVDs, which I'd seen advance clips of on millenniumfalcon.com, had me looking for the original versions on DVD. So when I finally found this place, it had a lot of my interests covered.

I'm also impressed by the quality of people who stick around here. For the most part, everyone works together and helps each other out in a pretty selfless way. This collaborative spirit is what keeps me around, and it makes me hopeful that soon, in spite of Lucas, we'll have HD versions of the OOT.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Initially, I was going to join the official site. Thankfully one of the posters linked this site from the official forums. I lurked both for a few days chose this site becuase, it was more freeing conversation wise. Also the fan edits disscussion was far more interesting to me at the time. I stay now for the people.

I started by looking for information on preservations of the 97SE and OOT. Then I found this place. Other forums simply don't have our close knit little band of awesome. The people, diversity, and freedom are what makes this place tick.

And where else in the world can you honestly talk about Star Wars in such nauseating detail? Nowhere. Not even at Lucasfilm, where George probably doesn't even remember anything about our "beloved" GOUT.
