Jedi KnightThought I'd see if there are any metalheads lurking around here. As you might see from my long-standing avatar, Iron Maiden hold a special place in my life. I'm especially fond of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal and likeminded bands like Motorhead, Saxon, Judas Priest (now, sadly, retiring), Angel Witch, Diamond Head and Holocaust, and also the early German power metal bands like Helloween, Running Wild, Stormwitch and Heavy Load. Other than Maiden, my fav band is probably Manowar, regardless of their cheese, and I'm fond to a lot of the newer European Death Metal and Power Metal scene, even it's gotten a bit bloated in the last five years or so.
Sadly, North America has few offerings for real heavy metal fans; stuff like Deftones, Tool and System of a Down are okay, I guess, but it's pretty sad that the best of the continent like Iced Earth, Dream Theatre, Manowar and 3 Inches of Blood are pretty much still pseudo-underground, despite in most cases being decades established. To the Europeans on this board, let's just say I envy you.

I can't really say much right now since I'm running out the door for work, so yeah this should be brief:
I love my metal. Especially the older death metal from the 80s and early 90s like Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, etc. I'm quite partial to just about all forms of metal though, and love me plenty of power metal and nwobhm.
It's quite a shame that most established american bands seem to almost exclusively tour europe nowadays.
Zombie, you should check out the upcoming album from Hell (UK). They're an old 80s nwobhm demo band that was pretty influential, but didn't ever get a full length released. They finally got things in order and are releasing an album, I think you'd enjoy it!

I started to hear Metal around 1988, as a cassette of Maiden's "Somewhere In Time" made its round in our classroom. Before that I was more the pop-type.
Since then a few bands joined, since I never really looked for something new.
Helloween, Blind Guardian (till 1997. "Nightfall In Middle-Earth" was the beginning of the end), Running Wild, Manowar, Apocalyptica, Rage (NOT against the machine). I also like some of the mainstream stuff like Linkin Park or Evanescence. Oh, and The Birthday Massacre (Gothic-Metal for Girls ;)). And the german language bands J.B.O. and Knorkator (both more on the funny side).
Some of my all time favourites: Black Sabbath's "Headless Cross" and "TYR", Blind Guardian's "Somewhere Far Beyond", Apocalyptica's "Cult", Metallica's "S&M" (although I never really liked Metallica except for the black album), Paradise Lost's "Icon".

I've listened to a LOT of System of a Down, Metallica and Apocalyptica back in the day, and generally love the metal genre in its different variants.
Can't say I'm particularly "well-listened" in it, so don't have much to say either.

Ive loved metal since i first heard Appetite For Destruction by Guns N' Roses,which is still a fantastic album. Since then ive been listening to all sorts of metal over the years. I prefer anything heavy and agressive like Napalm Death ,Bolt Thrower, Darkest Hour , Carcass , Brutal Truth, but i also like bands like Motorhead, Anthrax ( Joey Belladonna years) Megadeth and early Metallica and bands like Mastodon , God Forbid , Trivium and although im not a fan my wife has bought me a ticket to go with her to see Def Leppard, Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy:(.

Btw does anyone else find Apocalyptica's cover of Sepultura's "Refuse/Resist" harder and more exciting than the originals?
The original is just a kinda neat metal song with cool edgy harmony and really aggressive shout vocals. The cello version (at least the studio version - the live versions I've seen, not so much)... is a REVELATION.

Listen to the work of Iced Earth's drummer, Richard Cristy, on the Howard Stern Show. Guys phunnie crazie. After putting most of his time into the show after joining, he's had a few things put out with the group "Charred Walls of the Damned". Don't know if it's any good. (i like noise)

There is something inherently cheesy about Hetfield's style of pronounciation both in "Kill 'Em All" (my absolute Metallica favorite) - kinda too "unintelligible" - and the Black Album - the continuous "hahas" and "yeas".
Although I can't really say that amounts to anything "embarassing" - as it's all done with a good portion of humor and irony, and is incredibly fun to listen to.
I guess I don't know any "embarassing" metal albums, lol. Shutting my hole right now.

Return to Form, or Forum in this case!!I'm not much of a metal-head since High School, but I still listen to Maiden like crazy. I only like Metallica's RTL, MOP, and AJFA. I own every Pantera album made, including the live album and DVDs. I own every KoRn album ever made, though I don't really think their last 4 albums were as good as their first 5, and they were only heavy on the first 2.
I listen to Down, Crowbar, and Electric Wizard for newer metal.
I never cared for Slayer, but I do like Megadeth occasionally. I blast Holy Wars more than any human being should.
I don't really like hair metal or glam metal. It has to be really heavy for me to like it.
I think Deep Purple is the closest thing to classical music, metal has every come. Symphonic Metal bands fail at it.

Now that you mention it, I thought "Domination" by Pantera was pretty embarassing.
It's the only song I've ever heard by them, but after coming from the Apocalyptica cover, which is fucking awesome, I heavily disliked the original. Although I guess the instrumental part was alright, I just hated, hated the over-the-top vocals.

In their defense, the above wasn't actually released by them but chosen by their record company. They've actually had Ken Kelly illustrate every single album, single and video cover since 1987 with the best metal artwork this side of Derek Riggs. But they still get gay points for the existance of that photo. We can all be thankful that at least Ross the Boss always wore pants during their brief loincloth phase.
