You_Too; the upper chestbox light is indeed meant to be a green one but it was never lit. It was just the plastic cover glued on there.
Ok, I never mentioned it being lit though. :)
Here's what I was thinking about, scenes from earlier in the movie:
Anyway, this isn't meant as criticizm against Harmy of course. I know how hard it is to edit movies and you're doing a great job Harmy!

Han D. SoloYeah, it should definitely be green but as you can see it changes tint even between these shots and it could be because of the bluer lighting of that shot.

Yeah, it does change a little even there. It doesn't matter to me really, I wouldn't even notice small details like that if nobody had told me. :)

Han D. SoloOh, and BTW, since I'd really like to avoid making yet another version after v2.0 (unless of course a considerably better source appears - but then a considerably better source would basically yield the whole DeEd unnecessary ;-) ) quality control will be an important part of the project. A that's where you guys come in. I decided that as I'm progressing though the edit, I will post a separate workprint for every half an hour of the film when it's finished, which I'd like some volunteers to check. And then when the editing is finished, I'll post a second WP of the whole film, which will be at a higher bitrate - (probably a 4,36 GB 720p mkv) with pitch corrected audio (it has to stay 25fps, so that I can get relevant timecode based feedback) in order to make it a worthy watching experience to give it a broader appeal, but not quite a worthy replacement of the final version.
Anyway, here's my latest render of the first part of the sabre duel. I think it's pretty good now:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=DE0QP7NH
It should be pretty much the quality of the DVD9 AVCHD (the bitrate's slightly higher than that but that is to account for the GOUT in the upper left corner and the 04SE in the upper right corner).

hey harmy,
i couldn't help but notice the lightsabers changing
would using v1.0s lightsabers be an option?
i appreciate your hard work and i probably have no idea how much work that took but those changing sabers really stick out to me.

Han D. SoloAbsolutely not an option, sorry. This whole exercise of re-doing the lightsabres (which by a rough estimate took something over 100 hrs) was not to make the light sabers look better than in v1.0 (where I used the scene corrected by Adywan, so the sabers looked good but still obviously digitally recomped)but to make them look more like in the original. And that goal was IM(not-so-H)O achieved.
And I think the colours are quite consistent - sure they're not 100% consistent but all info indicates that the colours were by no means consistent in the original either.
And also, another not-so-minor factor: I f*cking love the look of the v2.0 lightsabres. I already watched that clip I posted like 20 times!

I never said you did. :) Just making sure anyone else reading know it wasnt lit. I know Adywan added a light to it for his Revisited edit and I just want to make sure the facts around that tiny button are preserved.

I'm excited for the new release, and hopefully you go through with the MKV release!
I just got a chance to watch 1.0 last week, and Harmy, you are a great person for doing this. When I got it, I just wanted to sample it, since it was 6 in the morning. I ended up sitting there for the entire movie. It was probably the best Star Wars home viewing experience for me, despite the early hour.
Thanks Harmy!

Harmy, it looks great! And I like how you reduced red in the shadows, makes it looks more like the cinematic shots we've seen, without being too green or cyan.
For everyone else to see what I mean: My render I gave Harmy on top, and his preview on bottom.
Harmy, I hope it's ok I posted this, so you don't think I'm spamming your thread with comparisons. :)

Han D. SoloYeah. No problem, You_Too, I'm glad you post these :-) And seeing it like that, I think I need to dial it back a bit on that Vader shot. I first tried to just boost saturation a bit but due to the nature of You_Too's correction, this creates some artefacts, where some parts get boosted more than others, making the border between them rather jagged, but then I tried this (dialling back reds in shadows and increasing them by about the same amount in highlights) and I think it works really nicely, better actually than the saturation increase. But it does need to be applied with caution.

Yeah, but I think you'll find the perfect balance, seeing how good it looks already.
Something you could experiment with if you want more "saturation", is a setting called vibrance. Photoshop and after effects both have that setting, but I'm not sure about premiere. Anyway, that setting has a different result on the colors than saturation. Here's an example: I took that shot from my last post and on top the saturation is increased, and on bottom the vibrance is increased instead.
Harmy

Han D. SoloI didn't find that function in Premiere but I don't really need it anymore.
What's interesting though, is that I found out that those artefacts I mentioned are only there when I boost the saturation in Premiere and they probably have nothing to do with the way you corrected it because it happens with other videos as well. Sorry about that.

SW is worth a lot to mejust cuz I haven't seen anything mentioned, I have to ask - does this mean that a V2 will be coming for ESB and ROTJ.
Not that I think one is needed, just curious if there is enough that you would change to make a V2
You_Too

Oh, ok. Adobe sure makes some useful but weird software.
Anyway, here's one color inconsistency I wanted to make you aware of, and that's because it happens before the part I rendered with reduced dark blue. This scene is right after the rebels have their mission briefing. Inbetween shot 1 and 2 is some seconds of Vader and Tarkin. Later when they show this same screen it's back to how it looked the first time.
Harmy

Han D. SoloThanks for letting me know. I'll see what I can do about it.
@Slynger: Yes, there is a v2.0 planned for ESB and Jedi as well. There's a lot to do on ESB, I think it will actually be a larger project than SW v2.0; eg. many more of those zoomed in cockpit shots were recently discovered. Also, while I'll probably be keeping the recomposited shots for Falcon's cloud city approach, I'd like to recolour the ship to look more like in the original.
And while there's almost nothing I want to change on Jedi, I am now using better software, which will enable me to render it in better quality with less compression, so that alone makes it worth redoing.

Sabers look amazing Harmy. Awesome. Can't WAIT to see this in full. I'm presuming the other colours aren't final? Ben's face and clothes noticeably change colour from shot to shot.

hey harmy,
if changing the sabers completely is too much trouble would you consider just color correct bens saber in that first clip from 0:00 to 0:41 to match the rest of the clip? bens saber seems to be the most noticable
because of the sabers i feel like i'm watching the SE from 0:00 to 0:41 and then it's immediately switches to the gout for the rest of the clip. kind of jarring
if not i guess i'll just dust off v1 :-D. Hey at least it's not green.
I just got done watching the second clip and it looks really good but around 0:22 to 0:24 i noticed bens saber changed colors back to the SE. Just thought i'd let you know if you feel like changing it.
sorry if i am being super critical but the closer this gets to being perfect the more excited i get.
