Thanks. As to the colours, I'm not sure yet but I'll only be dealing with colour timing after all the AE work is done and I get to the editing stage.

No, that's not really it. It's hard to tell from YouTube but look for specs of dirt - Since the CG shot that replaced this one in the SE used the same background, I replaced the parts of the background that were usable from the SE and then I cleaned up the the remainder of GOUT footage frame by frame in photoshop.
That was going to be my guess. I always found that interesting that they rendered the CG on the same plate as the original effects.

The melted bars thing really baffles me.  Presumably that was an actual on-set explosion and not a special effect added in post-production, right?  So why did somebody take it upon themselves to think it was not good enough?  Is this a case of "Reality Is Unrealistic"?  (as they say on TVTropes)  Somebody thought what was actually photographed didn't measure up to their conception of what it ought to look like, even though that's what it actually did look like?  And for just a couple of frames nobody would notice on their own?  What the heck is that about?
I don't think there was an on-set explosion that blew out the bars. There were probably two sets of grates, one full and one cut open. They show the full grate, then replace it with the broken one and blow up something behind it. It's a jump cut, just a pretty well covered up one.

Re: the grate -- thanks for the pic comparison Harmy.  I was completely unaware of that SE change.  Nice work restoring the original effect.

Re: the latest clip -- that new dewback looks fantastic Harmy... looks like it tracks perfectly now.  To echo AF, however, the new colours look a little off.  V1 looks more natural to my eye.  V2 looks too... green?

That being said, I'm watching this clip at work, and I'm not sure my monitor's all that trustworthy.  Plus, as you said, the colour timing is an issue for later on.

Thanks for the recent slew of clips.

Harmy, just had a fiddle with the contrast & brightness of the SW BD, it looks like the blacks aren't as crushed as the HD broadcasts.....dunno what do you think...top left is the untouched video, right is the GOUT, bottom is the adjusted footage.......no audio on clip...think thats what youtube picks up on.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Z8QSA2Pi7w

Also has anyone noticed that when the scene switches back to the second shot of the Power-Droid (when it starts walking) it looks like the image switches to SD ( bit like the shot Ady noticed in ROTJ)

Jaitea, brightness = black level. No offense, but what you've done by raising brightness is that you've raised the black level and turned black into grey. A better way to dig up the shadow detail is to use curves, and just make minor changes to the bottom and top of the curve if necessary. That keeps blacks black but can get detail out of it still. Check out my thread because that's what I've done!

No offence taken, I was basically trying to show that there is hidden details in those blacks, and in that particular scene (which is perhaps the worst scene in the movie regarding the crushed blacks)

I'm still mucking about with it, bare with me.

Here's another clip top one is adjusted, bottom one is the Despecialized

You_Too, is there a chance to show what you can do with your settings for this clip, I really do think this should also be one of the tweaks to Harmy's V2....another step closer to the original films.

Wow, there definitely is more detail in the background. I guess I should use the BD at least for this scene, because as Jaitea said, the crushed blacks are particularly bad in this one; I actually tried to revive some detail in the dark areas in this scene using the GOUT the first time around but the warping and shake made it impossible.

Thanks for the comparisons, J.

I'm still having some trouble getting my computer to use the BD footage properly though, so it would be quite nice to get the scene already brightened and corrected in high bitrate 720p AVC.

Have you tried demuxing the video track from the blu-ray m2ts file? It worked for me in after effects after demuxing it to ".h264" and changing that extension to just ".264".

Anyway, I'll try and make a render someday soon. The original in 1080p is 36,8 mbps, so what would be the best bitrate to use for 720p?

Don't want to see anyone get into any trouble here, but don't you think talking about ripping and sharing the Blu-ray video, or part of, should be taken to PM's? just sayin, because now you guys are right out in the open with it LOL.

Looking good. Is that the puggo grande in the upper left?

FYI, the youtube version is blocked for me too. Fox is really getting carried away with this lately. Time to switch to vimeo.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

I edited the post to contain a megavideo link for those who don't want to download.

And yeah, that's Puggo Grande, I used it as a template for the look, positioning and timing of the subtitles. I even stabilized the PG footage and then tracked the shake on the subtitles and applied it, so even the shake, even though it may seem excessive, should be authentic to how it would appear on an actual print.

Are the subtitles burned in or separate for the final release?

Wouldn't it be better not to burn in the subtitles? There are many other languages too.

To respond on what Atlantis said, I think it's possible to render such subs as sup-files to be able to choose to have them there or not when watching. Not sure though since I've never done it myself.

What do you mean by "such subs" though?

Because if any of you guys knows a way of making a subtitle track that is fully AVCHD compatible, with a font customized separately for every word, has a variable lens blur, controlled tracked gate weave, film grain and a slight, chroma only, semi transparent glow, I'll be all over it!

If you use sup subtitles which are for bluray, they will be images, so you can make them any way you want.

As for them to slightly move and have grain, I think it's way overkill and not necessary. They really didn't intend them to be moving originally!

If you don't burn in the subtitles, your release will be international and could be spread more. Other countries can have their own subtitles there.

The fact that they are for BD doesn't mean they'll work well with AVCHD.

They didn't originally mean to have matte-lines in composites either, yet it was a limitation of the technology at the time and if it was possible, I'd love to see every last matte-line that was originally there.

Other countries can have their own subtitles even if there are burned in subs. And those subs would be there if this was a scan of a print - and they would be grainy and shaky.
