I just rewatched DeSp_SW 720p on a 40" - perfectly enjoyable experience! This is Star Wars for the 21st Century. Glad I bought the BluRays, so I don't have to feel bad for stealing.
Thanks again Harmy for all the work you put into this, this will probably be my go-to version until Lucasfilm itself comes out with a restoration (which I believe they will after the old insane guy bites the dust).

The ones that are on Usenet right now, I take it they're all v1.0 ? Just wanted to make sure.

Very well done.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        On those laser shots from the jedi remote on the Falcon.  Those orange one start when Luke gets shot in the leg. There are only five shots.

I do have some questions about the shot when Luke walks to look at the twin suns. Is the sky one color or two? Looking at  different dvds some look like one but then I others look like two, can't really tell.

The ties engines are red but I don't think they were so obvious but that may be due to  high definition.

 Just wanted to ask.

Thanks Harmy

hey harmy,

it was recently pointed out in the star wars legacy thread that the original end credits had a blue drop shadow.  have you thought about recreating it for your version 1.2?  I guess something good could come from that whole mike verta fiasco after all ;-)

I'm pretty sure that the drop shadow is in the GOUT source, but due to the the bleed/bloom/blowout in the text, the DVNR and/or the low resolution/general lossy quality of the transfer, and probably also due in part to the dupey quality of the film source, all the shadow detail is eaten away.

Here's Verta's image adjusted to scope, with the same from Harmy's edition below.

As you can see, so much of the detail is gone in the GOUT that the letters don't even have clear edges.

Yeah, I like mine better, Mike's look fake to me. And I'll have DJ's credits for v1.2, so they should be even better.

I wouldn't say that at all... no offense, but your credits don't look too good and suffer a lot from upscale artifacts. I'm sure it would be possible to rebuild them to look more like the original (and I'm sure Mike's images are legit).

That would be a lot of work for just....credits.

I know... that's why we're still not sure if we'll recreate the German credits for our German version of Harmy's trilogy ;-)

Still, to say that Harmy's credits look better than the sample Mike has posted is simply not true (and a bit ignorant)... just because Mike's a prick doesn't mean that his samples look bad.

I thought Mike's were a recreation.

Anyway, for me, credits are so seriously unimportant a part of the film, that I would never put so much work into re-creating them. If someone makes them and at least two other people are willing to proof read them, I'd be willing to use them of course. But as I said, I'll be using DJ's Blu for v1.2, which is devoid of some of the artefacts present in Mattman's version, which I used in v1.0, so they should be better.

The drop shadow exists, it's just that so much detail is lost in every pre-SE video transfer that you can't see the shadow. As I demonstrated, even the edges of the main text layer are eaten away.

Mike has been referring to his "sources" in plural. From what he's said about his sources and his methods, however vague, I've gotten the impression that he is working from multiple sources beyond anything any of us have, and working to reclaim the detail level of the original negative by reconciling all of them. Also, he's been in contact with Dan Perri, the guy who did the credits. All I'm saying is that he didn't pull this drop shadow out of his you-know-where, he knows his shit about what the credits should look like.

But nevertheless, I wouldn't do it for this. I'm not even sure if the shadow would have been visible on a regular print. Both of Puggo's 16mm prints have basically the same detail level in the text as all the other pre-'97 sources I've seen.

I agree with Harmy, leave it the way it is.

To change the subject, have you considered my request to fix the shot after Alderaan blows up so that Luke's saber is as blue as the other shots in your version; sort of like the Technidisc LD, but with the correct blue hue? As I've said, as lossy as the Moth3r telecine is, I can tell that the saber is *blue* in that shot, not almost white like the GOUT or greenish-bluish-grayish like the '97 SE.

So I suggest fixing it to match all your other shots.

Actually I've been searching around for "things that need doing that don't require a great deal of technical expertise", and once I'm done with my current project, I could try my hand at a credits recreation.  I wouldn't have anything to show for a couple of years, though, I estimate, assuming I can even do it.  Interested people may want to try their own mini-projects to see if it's feasible.

I agree with you 100% on this Harmy, some here are getting way, way to damn nitpicky now, but like you said, they can make them themselves, I think some here forget what it is we are working with, and what we actually have at our disposal.

Replacing the credits isn't actually that much work... typing them all out (and formatting them) would be the main hassle here ;-)

Maybe they are all written out already somewhere on the web? Gotta check...

Edit: Alright, the scripts over at BlueHarvest.net contain the credits of the trilogy... I'll think about it :D

it was just a suggestion.  I don't think offering those is considered nitpicking.  If harmy feels like it isn't worth it then i understand

Of course it's nitpicking (or "detail oriented"), and thankfully it is!... I'd say that's what a successful project like this is about: Dealing with as many aspects as possible to get a product that's as close to perfect as possible. Hell, when I invest so much time in a project, I go the extra mile to fix the details as well... and Harmy working on a 1.2 of SW kinda proves that he feels the same way (even if the credits are excluded from that feeling ;-) ).

@ Dark_jedi: Somehow you always seem to be pissed off that your work (or in this case Harmy's, which utilized some of it) doesn't get appreciated more, and that people who point out flaws are ungrateful or something... what's up with that? There's so much creative power (not to mention ability!) around these forums, so why not listen to other people's ideas and suggestions, instead of feeling offended all the time?

So as to not muddy up Harmy's thread with the response I would like to give you, I am just going to bow down to your expertise handling of things Laserschwert, you do the credits proud and show us your work, I can't wait to see them, Thanks for doing this.

OH, and for the record, I couldn't care less if you appreciate what I do or not, if only 1 person likes my projects, I am happy, and it made it worth it.

Ah well, I once was a teenager as well, so I'm sure you'll lose the "Screw you!"-attitude once you grow up.

Anyway, since you've asked so nicely (loved the bow) here's the re-worked credits sequence: http://www.mediafire.com/?oh518fxqo8ecgmv

Nice job, Laserschwert.

Now, in order to use these though, I'll need this at 25fps, with the SE starfield (which I guess is probably the same) and a slight blur to the text and even a bit more blur to the drop shadow, to make it look less CG. A slight gate-weave separate for the starfield and for the text could also be good.

The gate weave's there... although not in the starfield. But I wouldn't blur it, since it wouldn't be blurred if this was an original transfer (just check Mike's sample again, which IS a scan of the film after all). I've already smoothed out the edges, so that it has more rounded corners (which is somewhat typical for an optical composite). Also, since it's 720p, it WILL get blurred once played on a 1080p device due to upscaling anyway.

But why 25fps?
