GOUT suffererWhen you remove a Ronto from a scene, is it fair to call it rontoscoping?

Chief Architect of Cynical MoralityHarmy created "rontoscoping", which is removing SE elements from the movies.
Adywan created "cantina-izing", which is manipulating mask/puppet facial features to be more expressive.
We're very verbose around here.

It's like it's quite possible that Picasso would have loved to use Photoshop for some of his paintings if it was available back then, but if you take a picture from Picasso and recreate it in Photoshop, it's not going to be the same picture and it can hardly be used to demonstrate Picasso's brush techniques.

Undead PixelSo since your planning on doing a 3.0 what will make the 3.0 different from Star Wars 2.5 that will be released soon and the 2.0 of Empire and Jedi that will hopefully com soon after? If I know that 3.0 will come eventually then I think I'll wait for 3.0 instead

Harmy 3.0 would utilise the 'Silver Screen Experience' (is that the right name?) project. Being able to use a Full HD 35mm scanned source would justify a new iteration, as I am sure Harmy is done with SW BD sourced material after this.

Since when has a 3.0 been on the table?
I thought Harmy already established that further upscaling was unnecessary (proven by comparison shots of Tarkin).

Han D. SoloYes, a doing 3.0 release is just a vague possibility and it would be at least a year before I'd even start working on it and we all know how long these projects take.
BTW. I know that the v2.5 release is seriously delayed but school work sort of piled up on me and I haven't really had time to do any work on SW and probably won't for at least the following two weeks. Sorry about that.

As much as a 3.0 would actually be great using a 35mm scan, i'm sort of missing the point here, why would he need to despecialise that.. isn't it already the theatrical cut of Star Wars pre-97?
Also, rather than a million edits of Star Wars, i'd rather see a new ESB & ROTJ to complete the trilogy personally, it's your project though so I can't force you, haha.

Han D. SoloSo
1) V3.0 would still be despecializing the BD, only using the 35mm scan as a source for the unaltered footage - here's why:
I realize that there's more compression here than there would be in the final release but it still shows pretty clearly that since the BD was scanned from the original negative, it has more fine detail than the LPP print even though the '04 scan is outdated, so a 1080p restoration using a 35mm scan to despecialize the BD could yield similar results to what a professional restoration from maybe an IP could achieve and that's something probably still worth the effort.
2) I will definitely finish ESB and ROTJ v2 before starting any work on a (again, still just potential) v3.0 of SW.

Chief Architect of Cynical MoralityI had a dream last night that Harmy released a clip of an all-new Cantina entrance. It had depth and a camera move, but the Cantina was now in a cave and had a row of dewback stalls next to it. I remember wondering how this was more like the original, but it was too cool to ignore.

Curse you all, you should have caught me!I think the 3.0 thing came up when Harmy linked to the PDE thread from two years ago about the "rontoscoping" term. After that post in that older thread, there was talk about a 3.0 of the "partly" despecialized edition. I saw a post that I made where I mention a version 3.0 (in early 2011) and was confused until I saw it was the PDE thread.

Good point, well, if you ever get round to actually doing that, make sure to release a BD50 version :p
Honestly though i'd never seen the N1 transfer, looks incredible, better than some of the films I have on my shelf, the fact that the blu-ray has so many crushed blacks as well where I guess the N1 version won't might be nice too.

Harmy, that quote makes me one happy camper! A 2.5 Star Wars & 2.0 of ESB & ROTJ make me giddy happy!!!

GOUT suffererYour focus is too narrow when it comes to what fixing the holiday special really could be. Instead of just lightly polishing up one segment, a few years back a brave group addressed the issues of the ENTIRE special, please enjoy (since without their efforts that wouldn't even be possible) http://www.rifftrax.com/rifftrax/star-wars-holiday-special

I think this is a good indicator of how much people prefer the original version of Star Wars over any sort of fan edit or Special Edition:
