Where did you download from (name the site, don't post a link) and what was the file called? Someone can maybe confirm you downloaded Harmy's original work and not a conversion.

Well, first of all, the saber colors themselves have been grossly up-saturated.  The original saber colors were no where near that colorful.  They were more photographic; tinted glows.  Vader's in particular was always a sort of pink with a slightly-more-reddish-outer edge.  

Since you can't globally push the blues and reds that high to get that look without corrupting the rest of the scene, these elements were treated separately, and the impact flashes were, as well.  That particular flash is easily the "whitest" of the flashes, which again highlights the blueish tint to the walls at its edges, but again the whole thing has been super-saturated way beyond what's on the negative.

This is all part of the cartoon-i-fication of Star Wars which began with Empire, where suddenly we see the droids are all shiny and repainted, and Vader's all clean and showroom new instead of interesting, historied, and weathered. It's just been a steady downhill trend of "bigger, brighter, shinier, more colorful," since then.  Gritty realism more or less ended with the first film.

The biggest reason the sabers and impact flashes looks so different is the recompositing done, not only have Obi-Wan borrowed someones lipstick but the whole thing is amateurish and looks ridiculous just in order to get rid of some generation loss in the original duel. It's impossible to know if everything is down to Lucas' poor taste or if the digital "artists" working on these were just some summer substitutes. To me it looks like the impact flashes in the original film have more often than not an orange-reddish outer edge.

As for the bluish flash, there's at least one other instance where it happens; the last one before Ben throws in the towel. There's also one particular impact flash somewhere in the beginning of the duel which looks like it was "burned" into the picture for several successive frames, can easily be mistaken for DVNR-artifacts if the 2006 bonus DVD is what you're looking at but that's actually how it appears in the original film.

- 16.06GB MKV
- 7.9GB AVCHD DVD9
- 4.29GB DVD5

Are these Harmy's original versions, or did he make the 16GB MKV and someone else converted them?

And, if anyone knows, what's the difference (besides picture quality, I guess)?

- 16.06GB MKV - by Harmy, best quality, has the most audio and subtitle options.

- 7.9GB AVCHD DVD9 - by Harmy, great quality, not much difference in picture quality from the mkv, less audio options.

- 4.29GB DVD5 - Chewtobacca's NTSC DVD5 conversion, most likely the best conversion you will see in sd dvd5 format, has only 1 audio track.

Okay, so what I'm doing right now is: my parents are asking me to rip/convert their movie collection to (.m4v) files with the intent of watching said movies on their AppleTV. My intent is, instead of ripping their Star Wars SE DVDs or my GOUT DVDs, I'm going to use Harmy's SW:DE fan edits.


My question is this: As I'm using the AVCHD's and Handbrake for this purpose, can any of you tell me what Constant Quality value I should use?

I suppose it is a question related to technical help regarding AVCHDs in general instead of Harmy's edit specifically. Sorry. :p

Which versions still don't have the fixed audio tracks? The OP suggests that the first (and perhaps also the second) track needs to be manually replaced.

All those 3 formats you listed on myspleen have been fixed already, the previous releases on myspleen were removed and replaced with the fixed audio tracks.

Hello! I'm new here, but I just wanted to say that I am grateful to everybody for their hard work and diligence in creating such painstaking restorations. Last weekend I sat down to watch Harmy's version of the trilogy, and I won't lie that I got a little teared up to finally be able to watch in such good quality the films that I grew up with.

I hope that these questions aren't too redundant, but:

Am I correct in assuming that anything GOUT synced could be synced to the Despecialized Edition as well? I have been interested in trying to sync up lossless versions of all of the '77 and '93 audio tracks as well as the isolated score — I'm actually also interested in the '85 stereo version, which I haven't found anywhere; I have the films with this mix on VHS, and the soundfield is particularly wide, especially for the music.

I'm beyond excited to see this work come out.  I'm aware of the history behind every source used and I'm blown away by the hard work compiling these sources together for the most consistent video quality.  What really makes this a worthwhile project is the way you've compiled every historically significant audio track to go with the film.  I attempted a project like this some time ago with some similar ideas.  I could never have put something together so astoundingly complete.

Anyway, the reason I'm posting is because the first post of the thread says to post for an invite to myspleen, and I'd like to politely take someone up on the offer.

IIRC, Harmy AVCHD and mkv video is already H.264, so all you should need to do is convert the desired soundtrack to AAC and mux together with the video into an mp4 container:  much less effort than converting the video.

I figured it out (I also asked the question of the Handbrake forums). The answer is to encode AVCHD using the same quality setting as Bluray (ie. ~22 RF).

Just remuxing it is a good idea, but space is also an important factor. When I ran it through Handbake at RF 22, it dropped the filesize from the AVCHD's 7.89GB to 2.54GB. ESB:DE is now 1.61GB and ROTJ:DE is 2.1GB.

Well, he'd have to do a 2.0 of TESB and ROTJ before tackling a 2.1... ;-p

Yes, v2.0 is planned for both esb and rotj, hopefully not v2.1.
