What about MySpleen?

I don't have a Myspleen account/invite.

I would like one, though.

I don't have one either. Would like one as well. I wonder thought if there is more of Harmy's work on Myspleen as opposed to usenet,

Interesting. I will also note that the bootlegs I've seen sourced from Eastmancolor prints (mthr, PS78) don't seem to have a blue tint like that. At least not that severe.

Here's the same frames in the first capture of PS78, stretched out to look more correct:

That bootleg doesn't tell the whole story of the original colors, nor would any video transfer done in the late 70s, but it does show a version that doesn't look as *blue* as your IB references. Mike weighed in last time this issue was brought up, maybe he can give his thoughts this time too.

These new frames do help me calibrate the colors on my new monitor, though. I think I'd dialed the green gamma down a couple points *too* much, because those blues were starting to look purple.

Yeah, I took the blue a bit too far in those screens, especially in the first half of the duel. But in this scene, it shouldn't be green like in v2.0 either. I'll post a video later, which will have the final colors.

I will admit that the images from the later part of the duel look better in your "after" screens than in the v2.0 shots. The color of Ben's lightsaber looks much more "accurate" to my eyes. When I first watched v2.0 on my new computer, I think this was one of the scenes that made me wonder if there was something wrong with my monitor.

The guy who did the PS78 telecine probably leaned too heavily on the green too, though the color palette seems to match the Senator photo.

I wonder what this scene looks like on the LPP print...

Damn. It's different in almost every single shot.

Edit: Possible reference? http://starwarsaficionado.blogspot.com/2012/07/star-wars-at-35-preparing-death-star.html

Nice find! All these behind-the-scenes shots and videos are important references because of Lucas's manic revisionism and Lucasfilm's professional shortcomings on the "released" movies. It is a printed picture however (a zoom-in will reveal it), and while the Death Star walls show blue, they are slightly less so after color correction.

Unfortunately, Harmy's picture strip does show inconsistency from shot to shot. That's a lot of work to rematch them all -- thank you, George. :) Perhaps the new AE software will automate it (better?).

Harmy said:

I couldn't get rid of the green tint before without screwing up the sabres and skintones.

A test color correction on a frame from a revised v2.1 snapshot ...

... based on known grey areas (low, medium, high) in the picture ...

... as those points were greyed (R=G=B, using the highest value for this overly dark shot), produces new RGB curves and the corrected shot:

Although this looks close to v2.0, the "green tint" is reduced mostly in the lighter areas (ex: light saber, illumination panels) where it catches the eye.

(Note: RGB grey should never be exactly R=G=B, as true grey probably doesn't exist in a movie image ... but it's good enough for this proof-of-concept.)

At the risk of being a suck-up I trust Harmy's judgment. He has access to sources we don't, a, and b, it seems he's already putting a LOT more work into 2.1 than he'd planned. Give him time, folks.

I'm sorry but using a photo of a set as this literal a reference is completely misguided, because A) It's a photo apparently scanned from a magazine or a book, so it's most likely far from what the actual colors of the set looked like and B) even if it was a faithful representation of what the actual real world colors looked like, the film went through color-grading in post-production, so the real world colors are irrelevant.

True enough, with the exception that "Possible reference?" suggests making it a Rosetta stone or disregarding all the other sources. We're all here searching and surmising because we haven't worked on Star Wars in the 1970's, either.

BTW, did you know (perhaps by your workflow?) if you applied a 30% saturation increase and a 30% strength 9300K temperature (with "remove color cast") to the laserdisc capture of that frame (from the 2006 DVD), it looks amazingly like your v2.0?

Agreed. Interestingly, I posted it in support of your color choice(s).

Yes, but an on set photo just isn't really a good reference to take colors from directly in general, much less scanned from a magazine.

Yeah, I know, that's actually where the v2.0 timing comes from. I had to adjust the BD footage to look more like the GOUT (with saturation increased) to match the area surrounding the sabre. And then I wasn't able to regrade it without causing trouble in other areas, so I just pretty much kept it.

I thought it was too coincidental that 2 settings (groups) brought it so close. :)

Adobe's website for After Effects didn't advertise functions to directly manipulate the RGB graphs. Does AE hide such details from the user (as does the above paint program's "saturation" and "temperature" controls)? Also, can masking be based on color(s) [level / hue / saturation / R / G / B / C / M / Y] to, for example, affect everything except the light sabers?

Would Star Wars "clapper" clips help as definitive color references and do we have them like the Star Trek community has (the black & white board would help, but one with a color strip would be better)?

Seeing those changes on video really makes a difference, even some bits where it looked like Vader's sabre might've looked a tad magenta in 2.0 seem to have that good ol' red look to it in 2.1. Great Stuff!

RE: Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD !!!REMASTERED is now released!!!

First time posting here...Harmy, this project is just extraordinary.  For the first time since I was 11 years old in a darkened theatre I'm able to watch Star Wars the way I remember it.  I've been looking around for quite a while, sorting through the fan edits, etc., trying to find something like this, and you've basically created exactly what I've been looking for...Star Wars in HD, with the things that would naturally be cleaned up in any sane restoration, but without the garbage alterations and "improvements".

I guess reading here you're still working on colour timing issues, but to my eyes it looks great...though the Death Star interior is slightly greener than I remember. :)  Actually, I don't even like reading this thread, because were it not for the frame by frame analysis, I'm not sure I'd even notice the imperfections.

Everyone I know, including my kid, who grew up with the PT, thinks this is a better way to watch it.  Can't wait to see what you do with 2.1.

Anyway, thanks for the amazing amount of work you've put into this..and the equally amazing final product. I really don't think anyone at Lucasfilm would have put as much care into doing this as you did...and with limited resources.

Very, very well done.

PS....Does anyone know how I can get on MySpleen?  I was able to download SW 2.0 and Empire and Jedi elsewhere, but I want to be ready when 2.1 is ready!

Absolutely nothing to complain about, Harmy.  Very nice.

Also, is it my imagination or are you no longer in your cubist phase?  If so, that's even better news!

Is anybody worried about Disney? As much as we are angry at George Lucas for screwing up Star Wars you do have to give him credit for not taking legal action against his fans. Now that a major corporation without its history based mostly on Star Wars has taken over I worry that Disney won't think twice before bringing the hammer down

Lucasfilm will remain basically autonomous, and I assume it will retain its own legal department with its own policies.

Lucas and his lawyers didn't ignore us out of magnanimity, they ignored us because in the larger scheme of things, we just don't matter that much. I don't think there's been a single studio crackdown on a fan edit since Superman II, and even then WB failed to suppress it because it spread to Usenet and BitTorrent. And that was what, 2005?

In short, I don't think the stakes have changed at all.
