OK. First, TServo, I had the same problem when I switched to a new laptop and I ended up getting an external monitor to be able to work on colors, because no matter what adjustments I did, I couldn't get the colors to look right on the laptop's monitor.

And now, the x-mas release is becoming increasingly unlikely, because I'm having some trouble with my computer and will probably need to reinstall Windows and there's no way I'd have time to do that before x-mas. No matter what I try, no matter what codec I use, I keep getting these rendering errors when rendering AVI:

They appear randomly in different frames on every render even when using the same settings.

On a different note, I've recently seen something that made me rethink the Obi-Wan scene (many of you will know what) and I decided to start from scratch on it. Here's the result:

You can see the encoding errors appear in the recently rendered v2.1 footage in this video as well.

You know, you could sell those frames as art. It could start a new art movement: Encodism. :)

Anyway, jokes aside, the new color timing of that scene looks great! Much more warm and desert-like.

It looks like a city, Harmy.

Please start the Encodism movement.

Really like your latest attempt at that Obi-wan scene, Harmy.  Very nice.

Man, the blu-ray version looks really bad in comparison.

Harmy can you tell us what it is you have seen that made you rethink the Obi Wan scene. I do like the new colours i must say but the change is so different from your previous version it makes me curious as to what print/version you based the colours on?

Am I supposed to see something if I stare at the Endcodism picture long enough?

Wait... I think I see a schooner!

This probably comes as no surprise to you, but I love the new look of the Ben scene.

My guess is "Nude Descending a Staircase".  But seriously, I hope you get the rendering issue fixed, that's terrible.  BTW, is the video source for the renderer on an external (USB) drive?  I wonder if the disk I/O is having trouble keeping up with the renderer and it's failing spectacularly.

The new footage definitely looks a lot better.

It's not an exact match with the source (if it is what i'm thinking about) It's a little lighter I think. However that might be a good thing, as I thought the source might have it a bit TOO yellow. (nothing terrible just personal opinion)

Well Harmy, I'm glad that you are now using a external monitor to base your color correction scenes with. Secondly, whatever footage you saw, I'm glad that you spotted it before releasing version 2.1, and I'm happy to see you're re-editing some scenes that were in question in version 2.0

Your recent edits are refreshing to see. Please do keep an eye on whatever footage that you've seen recently...that have turned you to re-think how this project is supposed to look like...like the way it was in the summer of 1977.

The ben scene must be the most talked about shot on the Despecialized Edition, and it seems there are many different colour variations floating around, here is a good photo of the scene at the senator showing http://petergaultney.smugmug.com/Movies/historic/Star-Wars-at-The-Senator/13089279_nXePV#!i=948681807&k=LfFw9q9

Personally i do not care what the colours are like in this scene for DE 2.1 aslong as they are accurate to the original sw source and not what people remember it to be or what they want it to be.

I think the senator shot might be a little overexposed actually. But its hard to prove exactly.

I agree jero32.

I believe, Harmy's original mission was to re-create the movie to how it looked like in the theaters in 1977. Scans of photos and camera pictures taken of a movie shown in a movie theater can be deceiving, if taken with a less than professional camera, and even at that, can be... misleading.

As a test I took a screenshot from a ...certain project.

After boosting the brightness alot and taking out some red, it comes out surprisingly close to the senator screenshot, down to the green in his cloak coming out because of the missing reds.

Hahaha, perfect picture response, Laserschwer!

Encoding issues like that could be either an overheated component, such as RAM, CPU, or GPU, or, it's simply data corruption happening somewhere in between the source / destination (drive) due to any number of things. Something as simple as a bit of interference on the SATA bus, a bad connection, or at worst, bad sectors on a disk getting/receiving bad data.

Suppose it could be an OS issue, but I'd hope that *backups* are more importantly happening, no matter what (including all the project files etc.).

Suppose reinstalling OS might help, but I'm leaning more towards hardware. Try dusting first, maybe check RAM, always be sure the machine is getting proper ventilation, etc. just as a matter of good measure.

Regarding the Ben scene - The last round was ok, but this looks like a GREAT improvement! C3P0 looks "just right" towards the end, greenish hints are all but gone (R2D2 closeups in particular, and a couple of other places), red shift is fair, and in favor of some tasteful things, and the "washout" is all but gone in a couple of background spots... very cool!!!!!

Actually, my new monitor IS external. I think that my laptop's colors were wrong, but at the same time, the default settings on my new desktop's monitor and video card don't seem right either. Doing some hue and color level corrections in the video card display settings improved the yellow and purple issues a bit - though I'm not sure if it fixed it entirely.

I do realize that some of these color issues may be a result of working from the modern transfer, and they're just issues I never noticed because they were dulled by my laptop's display.

I know some of them are indeed color issues with DeEd 2.0. I thought the crawl looked too yellow and not "golden" enough on my new display, but Harmy's recent 2.1 screenshot looked much better on said display. That proves that it wasn't just a color issue on MY display.

This comment is only for those of you who appear to misinterpret what I've been questioning about. I know in my previous posts I've tried my best to explain my situation but I think its misleading you guys into thinking Im asking about something else. I won't go into detail this time so here it goes. How do I burn (burn meaning popping a blank DVD into my computer and pressing burn) Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition to DVD with the additional audio tracks?

Are you the guy who keeps asking for help and keeps ignoring the people telling you to post about it in the tech help forum?

If so, please go post about it in the tech help forum.  Also, thanks for explaining what "burn" means. :-/

New video looks good!  Probably as good as that footage is ever going to look (having spent years professionally restoring still images, I'm starting to think that section may have been victim of particularly bad colour fading based on what I'm seeing - looks like you've boosted saturation on at least a couple of channels, but there's info missing from the source).   The dynamic range looks like a good compromise too - we've got shadow detail back and the high end of the gradients are nicely defined too.  Must have been a real bitch, but it looks sooooo good, Harmy!

Also, am I seeing things or did you manage to fix that weird colour issue on the up-wipe between threepio and Ben's hut?  I commented months ago that it had some weird stuff going on, and you said yeah, it's on the BD.

Harmy, overall I like your new version. But there is one small problem. E.g. at 1:03 check the rock above the speeder. On the Bluray you can see the "structure" on the light rock, you can see no details on your version. I think it's just a side-effect of the colour correction, isn't it ?

But anyway, it's a very minor thing, which I wouldn't even notice if you didn't add the BD video for comparison :-) Overall, great work !

RE: Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD !!!REMASTERED is now released!!!

@INv8r: Thanks. As to the wipe, I didn't really do anything to fix it but it might have got better as a byproduct of the over-all correction.

@pittrek: Well, it's because the Blu is much darker. You can of course brighten the shadows and niot the highlights but there's a point where it starts looking unnatural and tampered with. In the whole DeEd the highlights are a bit more crushed than in the murky BD but like I said, with the over-all brightening it would look unnatural if they weren't.

Brightness and colors in that scene are much improved! Any chance you could move the wipe up a bit so we don't see the residuals of Ben's CG'd hut? It's a new wipe anyway, so wouldn't be much less technically inaccurate.
