"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality. I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

You should lower your expectations or you may be disappointed ;-)
My high expectations brought on by your past achievements were exceeded.
I feel like all the 'roadblocks' to enjoying watching the film have been removed. There's no SE garbage, and no significantly distracting artifacts of their removal.
It's just awesome to both, say, make out the individual whiskers on Kenobi's beard while also avoiding any obvious CGI. It's the almost fully original version restored in crystal picture.

I am ready for the OOT!I watched this last night with my 2 sons. What a great experience.
I think I finally have an original version of Star Wars that I can watch on my 50" TV, without being distracted by jaggies, dinosaurs, or the color blue. Thank you Harmy.
Most of the de-specializations were perfect (like the detention block, sandtroopers, cantina). But in some places the GOUT upscale is the best source to work with (mostly the dogfight scenes at the end of the movie). Thanks to Harmy and those who contributed, I don't think this movie could get any better without a new source of the theatrical version. And, of course, Hariy Hen's great 5.1 mix is a treat.
I'm also humbled to be included after the credits, along with greats like Adywan and Dark Jedi. I am not worthy :) . But my oldest son did get a big kick out of seeing my name on TV!
Mr. Lucas, the bar has been raised.
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Han D. SoloThat is your best WP reviewer prize ;-)
And sending me the 97SE discs is also a highly appreciated help :-)
I guess h_h would deserve that prize for WP review as well but he was a bit late to the party (and he gets his credit anyway for both his WP check contribution and the wonderful 5.1 mix) :-)
And thanks for the positive feedback :-)

btw will there eventually be a NTSC dvd5 release for this?
The changes that George Lucas has made over the years to Star Wars is the equivalent of someone keying your car. On an intellectual level, you know that the car still works, and its only marred a fraction of a percent of the paintjob. On an emotional level, every time you see it, it's all you can focus on, and it makes you want to rip someone's face off.

I just remembered another option. You could download the AVCHD and take the m2ts file from it and convert it to SD DVD with the AWESOME free program AVStoDVD. I recommend using the HCenc encoder included.

Doesn't know how to handle his new-found fameI tried getting it via the instructions in the first post, but after several hours, my computer quit at around 200 mb... The links work, but is there a way to use jdownloader or something to get this? It'd be really helpful to be able to pause & restart where I left off as needed...

Outstanding job Harmy, the Death Star Battle in particular looks great. Probably the only part that breaks the ilusion of seeing the original is the saber duel, but there's nothing you could have done there.
Thanks a lot for this wonderful release.

hi harmy,
i really feel bad about doing this because i don't want to seem ungreatful but i've found a problem.
it looks like (at least to me on my computer) that the colors have been brightened alot in some shots. with the result being almost gray looking blacks. because of this it looks like faint greys popping up where they weren't before.
the worst example i've found so far is when han says
"stay sharp there's two more comin in and they're gonna try and cut us off"
when i look at the stars in this shot there appear to be little grey halos around them. could someone else confirm this so i know it's not just my crappy laptop that's doing this. i looked at adywans A NEW HOPE 1080p color corrected and it doesn't seem to do it there.
again i don't want to seem like a nit picky ass hole.

Han D. SoloOh, yeah, I know about that but it's this bad only in a few shots. In theory, it should be that bright and you should be seeing fields of smaller stars where there are the grey areas but they're eaten up by compression because the compression algorithm knows that it's so dark that those details wouldn't be visible anyway, so when you brighten the picture, these compression artefacts are brought up along with some additional detail. This is an unfortunate side-effect of doing colour correction on a compressed source but until the blu-rays come out, this is about the best source there is.
I'm not denying that it's a mistake on my part, because I could have simply not brightened it so much but I didn't notice it until after the final encode and didn't think it a big enough issue to go through the whole encoding ordeal again, because like I said, it's just a few shots.

Reginald ScumI've been away on a much-needed vacation, so I haven't had a chance to check out the final version yet. Sorry I wasn't able to get you those Greedo subtitles in a timely manner; but it looks like you did a good job with them. I'm glad my notes on the colour correction were helpful.
I can only play any kind of HD files on my laptop at this point, so I'll have to wait for the dvd before I can watch it completely, but I'll look for the high-def version anyway since it would a shame not to have it around for whenever I do manage to upgrade. Based on what I saw from the workprint, I am sure it is going to be fantastic in any resolution, and I'm really looking forward to it.
Thanks for the props on the 70mm mix, as well--I'm always glad to hear that it's being enjoyed. ;)
The illusion is complete. It is reality, the reality is illusion, and the ambiguity is the only truth. But is the truth, as Hitchcock observes, in the box? No, there isn't room; the ambiguity has put on weight. --Gavin Milarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Doesn't know how to handle his new-found fameWhen I tried (& failed) downloading the links directly from the site, it was taking forever & eventually froze up. But now that I've put the links in Jdownloader it's going insanely fast! It's downloading all 4 pieces at the same time & going over 200KB/s per file! I've gotten over 7 GB in about 2 hrs & only have about 30 mins left. I need to go grab some dvd9's...
