The comparison I'm working on (well, the project file got corrupted, so I'll have to start from scratch) will be comparing the BD, GOUT, DeEd v1 and v2.

Just a few quick questions (I´m not that tech-savvy): Once the fixed AVCHD is released, all I have to do is burn it (it´s an .ISO, right?) on a Dual-layer DVD and it will most likely play on my BD-player or PS3? I can use a regular freeware burning program? Should I or should I not tick the "seamless" box on the burning program when selecting when I want the layer change to occur?

^^ I am convinced that the scene with Obi-Wan was intentionally blown out that way.

If you notice, the part before Obi-Wan comes, which is in the same location, has normal colors.

It's precisely when Obi-Wan appears that the frame turns white.

For home video, they were probably trying to correct everything to "normal" and so they saw these blown out whites as a mistake and regraded it to match the part that had come before.

Now that you mention it, the scene is beginning to remind me of the scene in Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers where Gandalf the White first appears. Maybe they were going for matching the brightness of the scene with the spirituality of the character, or something like that. But maybe the connection wasn't all that clear, which is why they toned it down for later releases.

our 35mm lpp version is not blown out... in fact

ours might be darker.

however it probably came out in 1981/1982...

due to the scenes being shot at different times,

and places.. there is discontinuity all throughout

the tatooine scenes.. they will be evened out in

our version though.

Even though you can't release them now, consider making your comparisons with the reference pics you were provided with.  This way when they give their blessing, the comparisons with the IB pics will help clarify the process DeEdv2 went thru.  Hopefully it's as easy as a layer off and/or an auto crop function.

Yes, you could use ImgBurn to burn it.  There won't be a "layer change" option as this is AVCHD and not a DVD.

Why even it out if that's the way it was cut together?  It sounds to me like that isn't a flaw on your print- just a side effect of the way "Star Wars" was actually filmed.  Maybe I'm being too much of a purist here...

LOL, of course Harmy thought of it first. I'll gladly come along for the ride...

Out of curiousity, Harmy, how is the comparison going to be? Is it going to be options, like v2 vs. 1) v1 2) Bluray 3) GOUT? That would be cool; otherwise, how will you compare 4 sources? Just curious....

I think chaps (and chapesses) if you feel so concerned with this "blown out" scene, get yourself an editing program, colour and light the scene the way you would like it and then watch your own version. I think your all forgetting this is an edit by a person (not a company) who has spent many hours getting it the way he feels is close to the original cut and look of this beloved movie and then he has gladly shared his work with us all. We've got to remember their were thousands of different prints of this movie shown on thousands of different projectors and it being on actual film no two prints were ever going to be exactly alike especially colour wise .

I think really if its not to your liking, dont watch it. Watch the official release instead.

Phew! I feel better now.

^ Well said.  Harmy put this together and shared it with us.  If you would like to watch the movie (or certain scenes) w/ different colors, change them and have at it.

Bottom line, Harmy was gracious enough to do this and he didn't have to.  To come back and bi*&ch about certain colors is a little low.

our version doesn't have as much variation in the

color of those scenes..  the adjustment is a lot less

than you would think it is just going by our raw shots

in the previous link..

there WILL ALWAYS BE AJDUSTMENTS MADE BY PERSONAL

PREFERENCE OF THE person doing the color correction.

what you think is 'even' and what we think is 'even'

is up to what we will decide as to the nature of it.

since we're going to have grindhouse versions that

preserve the 'raw' color of the prints, you'll get to

see how those those scenes really looked, and if

you want, you could edit them back into the version

of your choosing..

I am (VERY SLOWLY) downloading the covers and wanted to ask, are they already at the proper size for a printer to produce them for a BD case?  Or, will they need to be resized?

What covers are you talking about and where are you d/ling them from?  And yes, like it was stated before 'Undercoverxp' is a great program for printing out covers.

The changes that George Lucas has made over the years to Star Wars is the equivalent of someone keying your car. On an intellectual level, you know that the car still works, and its only marred a fraction of a percent of the paintjob. On an emotional level, every time you see it, it's all you can focus on, and it makes you want to rip someone's face off.

I don't think there are any new 2.0 covers out yet.  Harmy did say he was planning on doing two different versions for the BD release, though.

The covers are linked in the first post.

Star Wars is the only case in modern film history where the preservation of the original award-winning version has been left up to the fans.  That fact alone proves that Lucas is insane.

Right.  THE V1.0 covers that is.

I've downloaded what appears to be a version of the DVD5 that claims to have the fixed h_h audio off usenet. Listening, it is difficult for me to find the differences between the two. Is it legit? Can h_h shed light on what we should listen for?

If it's legit then maybe I'll begin seeding it and ask walkingdork to mark the old torrent as nuked.

Yeah, the pluggin does mainly tackle colours, so the brightness isn't completely acurate. But yeah, it was really difficult to make it this bright and keep everything just right, I had to do a lot of curves adjustments and some of the shots were a bit brighter in the BD and they might look a bit too bright but not too far from the source.
