Great work, Harmy!
one question though... How come the V2.0 shot here looks so different from this shot that Mike posted?
Harmy, if you get a chance, could you ask Mike about this scene, and why it is so much brighter on your reference images than other releases.
I know you're probably sick of all the color timing discussions and criticisms, but I was just curious about this scene.
Thanks.
I'm wondering the same thing myself. This is my first time coming to the thread since it was released so I apologize in advance as I don't frequent the forums all that often. I saw the film in 1977 as well and don't quite remember it being this bright. But that could be years and years of watching revision after revision of the film and the boost in contrast. But it does seem a little on the excess in this particular scene. The rest of the Tatooine scenes sans the dune sea look fairly nice to me. But in defense of what is being said, some of the Topps trading cards from the blue series are quite bright as well. The DVD5 and the MKV do look brighter on the PC than when streamed onto my XBOX and displayed on my 120" projection screen. So there is some difference there.
Anyone using TVersity to stream to their Home Theater? I had to download VLC and Haali Media Splitter just to get it to work, and it's a bit choppy. If anyone has any setting suggestions, I'd appreciate it. I don't have a blu-ray burner, so I'll be stuck with streaming or waiting until the AVCHD file is completed.
Excellent work Harmy and thank you!

Go back a few pages - it was discussed there in detail. Also, the source Harmy colortimed to was IB Tech. It will never fade. It will never change color. Now, it could be a separate color timing for the IB print, but regardless, the way it looked on the film he colortimed to was exactly the way it should look. Remember that photographing a screen does not give you accurate results. Period. It is a good indicator (sometimes) unless it tries to brighten or darken to "fix" the white balance. Other than that, I think I would trust Harmy's scans (which may have come from Mike himself) over a picture of a frame, projected onto a screen.
Also, remember what he said when he released it? Please keep comments between PMs. Don't ruin the film for someone else. It is finished, and I don't think that Harmy would appreciate people griping about something that he spent hundreds of thousands of hours on, making it as perfect as he could given the sources he had.

You can add in your German crawl and smart render from VideoReDo without recompressing the whole thing, and the result should still theoretically be BD compliant. That's what I'd do. You might have remux to M2TS first; I don't know. It's been a while since I've used it.

Mverta was talking about the bulbs used when this was being projected and that a bulb from the 70s had a warmer yellow hue to it.

*shrugs*
Theoretically, it should be compliant. I've burnt BDs that have been run through VideReDo before and they've played fine. For personal use, I couldn't care less about 100% compatibility because if the result plays, it plays. But then again I hardly ever burn discs, so...

After further thought, I'm of the mind my monitor settings may not be setup properly to display the movie in the anticipated result. I'm not sure exactly sure what that scene is supposed to "look like" anymore. LOL. Anyone want to post their screencaps at 30:41 and 30:43? I'm curious what everyone else is seeing.

I'm seeing what appears to be too much brightness as well here. Don't get me wrong, this whole project by Harmy was a MAJOR undertaking on his part, with a lot of help from many others also, and I don't want to come off like I am any sort of expert on how to adjust things according to color timing. Anyway, here they are:

Interesting. I'm seeing the exact same image color wise. This doesn't match what I saw Harmy's screen capture from back in January. Granted, it's not the same screen grab, but it's of the same scene. I don't know about the rest of you but I see more white saturation than yellow with less contrast and a very mild green in Obi-Wan's cloak. If I adjust my monitor's settings, I can get it fairly close to the intended result in Harmy's screenshot, but I'm not at all sure if Harmy intended that kind of monitor recalibration or if it should look as intended from default monitor settings. My screencapture is below Harmy's images.

People seem to forget that the photos Mike posted was from a screening using a warm 70's bulb. If Harmy had wanted it to look like that, he'd have to add a warm curve to the whole movie.
I also remember Mike saying that the only thing that could be 99.9% trusted in those pics (if aiming for a 70's projection look) was the hue.
If I remember correct, Harmy was not aiming for a 70's projection look, but the 1977 version "remastered" to today's standard which is not as warm.

Yes, that is exactly the colors/tones/contrast etc that I am, seeing as well. It does not look like the work print above that was shown to us a while back. It looks washed out and too bright on all my display devices...computer monitor, Plasma TV and LCD TV.
Here is a screen grab from my desktop computer running VLC Media Player:

sunday256, I like your adjusted picture there. It has just about the right amount of color, contrast and saturation...I believe...Nice work, if you did that!

Padawan LearnerActually my screengrab was right off the printscreen. I didn't adjust it at all. My monitor settings are set at default actually. It appears exactly as your screengrabs color and brightness wise. Just smaller/
I'm wondering if what we're seeing is the middle part of that scene actually being shot on a different day because it looks less saturated and the sky is actually more white than blue. Look at 29:29, 30:11 and 32:00. There seems a stark contrast in color and saturation with the 30:11 timecode being more white than blue compared to the other two timecodes. Excuse the sloppy pasting job...

That may very well be, that those scenes were shot on different days. Mark Hamil is lying differently when Alec comes over to him to help him up. Good eye!

Padawan LearnerIt would appear that you're right. I mostly noticed the sky, rock color and Obi-Wan's cloak color being starkly darker at the end of the scene. But notice how Luke's left arm's sleeve is more towards his elbow once he falls and at the middle of the clip when Obi-Wan bends down the end of his sleeve is at his wrist. When they help C-3PO up Obi's hair was obviously recently combed and his hood has been flattened down. Much different than the middle. So it's obviously two different takes, and possibly a different day with different lighting. That could have been a reason why it looks so washed out compared to the rest of the scene.

"You don't need to see his identification"I guess no matter what the reason is, I must say that I certainly don't recall seeing this in the original release in 1977.
The compilation of film reels/prints and so forth, that Harmy has gathered to gether and for the most part, color correct, or whatever he has done, is by far the best representation of Star Wars the movie out there... bar none, thanks to his (and some others) hard and diligant work. This project makes GL look like somewhat of an incompetant buffoon, IMHO.
I may not 100% agree with all the color/tints/brightness settings etc, that Harmy has put into this project, but I certainly envy his talent and sticktoitiveness throughout this whole procedure. We all have added our two cents to nearly every aspect of the project, and Harmy has taken nearly all of it in-stride, and has valued nearly everyones input...even mine.
Thank you again Harmy for putting up with me/us! Your Star Wars Despecialized, both version 1 & 2 are invalueable!
