Padawan LearnerI always find that typo so interesting because it's such a subtle yet glaring mistake (the word "pourrant" near the end which should be "pourront"). It's pronounced the same, but you'd think there would be more people spell checking this stuff.

Well, in many markets, Greedo was simply dubbed over speaking the same language as everyone else, so there would be no need for subtitles at all in those cases.
Really? I didn't know that. In the French version, we just have French subtitles.
Harmy: Don't get me wrong, I'm not asking you to put localized crawls in your release. English would be enough already. I'm just suggesting for non-English speakers who want to alter your release (if you're OK with that, of course) with theirs. As it's always pointed out, the first time you see Star Wars as a kid is a memory many of us have. And I didn't see "Star Wars" but "La guerre des étoiles". I even remember that evening pretty well even if it was almost 20 years ago.

Padawan LearnerHere's how it is in French.
http://youtu.be/AIOwvY2SmBc?t=3m14s
Greedo speaks Huttese - but the subtitles are obviously not the theatrical originals.
PS: Harmy has mentioned that he is making the original Greedo footage available sans subtitles for those who would like to add their own.

So I repeat my question - in the case of the Greedo subtitles, what displayed in non-English-speaking theaters? Does anyone know for sure?
as soon as we get a tape, we'll get back to you on that.... but I'm pretty sure the subtitles were localized.... If they went through all the trouble of localizing the crawl, the "a long time ago", the Lucasfilm card, why not the Greedo scene?
Plus, the SEs were done that way
As far as I remember they were. Any country which dubs movies had greedo subtitled in their own language. It make sense that a country like Sweden where they only subtitle the films they would just use the original master with english subtitles on greedo and just superimpose their own, it's cost effective.

In the Portuguese and Czech dubs, he's dubbed in that language. I don't believe any of the dubs included with the GOUT had this going on.

SW is worth a lot to meSo I know this is the wrong thread, but it's the most active and I'm pretty sure someone in here (ahem, Harmy) will have the best answer; I have to re-download ROTJ and was wondering what the best place to go to is? If possible can you post a link?

I am ready for the trials! As some of you might know I've already re-created the German intros as faithfully as I possibly could in HD (SW, TESB, ROTJ) and I was thinking about doing that for some other languages as well, IF I could get usable captures of the translated opening cards and crawls. Preferrably the pre-SE versions (since that's the point of Harmy's project).
I found the French SW crawl on YouTube as well (the same one posted a bit earlier in this thread), but if someone has better captures of these things, feel free to PM me.

Leo and I were inspired by your work Laserschwert, we're pretty sure we can manage the HD version of the titles (+subs for Greedo). Early tests were excellent, I'm now waiting to get hold of the old videotapes to check the scene with Greedo and the end titles.

Han D. SoloHere's another clip for you guys. These are two shots I did in the last two days, which I decided to redo from scratch. The first one (the "move along" Ronto shot) I redid because the quality of the area where I used ANH:R to remove the Ronto still bothered me and also the shape of the objects in the background wasn't quite accurate. The second one (Alderaan explosion) I redid because I found out that they changed the starfield in the SE but I think I managed to make the explosion look better too (or at least more accurately coloured).

That's right. But since the 97 SE (when they redubbed the entire trilogy), Greedo was subtiled, like the French video up here.
And, Harmy, I loved the menu by the way. Reminds me GOUT menus.

Han D. SoloYeah, same goes for the Czech dub - in the original early 90s dub Greedo was dubbed into Czech and in the later 97SE dub he was subtitled. Now there a third brand new Czech dub on the BD, which apparently sucks ass because the actors they used don't sound anything like the original actors (Luke for example sounds like a 40 year old man and Han is dubbed by the same guy who dubbed Luke in the two previous dubs). Though the translation is probably much better.
Also, and I brought this up before but it didn't spark the discussion I was hoping for, for the Czech BD release, they changed the Czech title of ROTJ taking "the Jedi" to be plural, so it basically now translates as "The Return of the Jedi Order".

Well, it wouldn't spark too much discussion from us Germans anyway, as it's always been "Die Rückkehr der Jedi-Ritter" -> "The Return of the Jedi Knights" in German ;)

Padawan LearnerIn French, "of the" is translated to the singular masculin "du" and not the plurial "des". So "the Jedi" in this case is refering to just one person.
Le Retour du Jedi.
This is kind of blowing my mind how translators interpreted the title... Totally changes the meaning! Kinda cool, eh?

Well you obviously haven't seen/heard the Slovak dub of the 1997 SE :-) All aliens (Greedo/Jabba) were speaking Hutteese, but there were NO subtitles at all :-)
