Harmy's version 1.0 doesn't have this greenish tint in it, and looks much better. I am attempting to show a comparison screenshot.

The second shot's grading does definitely seem off in comparison..

I'm going to be "that guy" and say that I trust Harmy's judgment on the coloring.  While the above may look more natural, if the top is how the film is supposed to look than I prefer that myself.

for reference: a shot from the Senator Theater screening here that's lookin' kind of green too.  Keep in mind it's obviously a picture of the projected image though.

Hmm... well, I'm no authority on this (I just like to meddle :P), but Harmy didn't really have any proper theatrical references when he made version 1.0, did he? Subsequent discussions have shown that Star Wars did have some odd colour "issues" from the very beginning.

I don't think that shot of R2 looks wrong per se; if you look at this photo from the Senator screening, the greenish tint is definitely there.

I do know that a photo of a theater screen isn't an ideal reference, but if that photo is at least close to how it's supposed to look, I'd say Harmy knows what he's doing.

Heh, sorry about that. At least I'm not alone in thinking that it's time to just let Harmy call the shots himself. Again, those looking for a saturated GOUT may wind up being quite disappointed.

I'm personally looking forward to watching a film I have never seen.

(Longtime lurker here. Love your work, Harmy.)

If you're taking requests, I'd love a set of the front cover art that's 666 by 1000 pixels for importing into iTunes (like a movie poster). Blu-Ray boxes are more square and the lettering doesn't fit at the aspect ratio iTunes likes. iTunes will take any shape art but it's neat to have everything looking uniform.

If anyone's curious, I've used Handbrake to convert the files using the Apple TV preset but with the resolution increased to 720p. The movies look great on the iPad and iPhone 4, too. You can import all of the soundtracks or just pick the first one depending on how small you want the files to be. I also downloaded .srt subtitle files and added those using Handbrake.

Hey fellows. Don't get me wrong, I think Harmy is doing a wonderful job with this whole project! And I want to thank him again! I'm not the one to "bitch" about the coloring or grading, or really anything that Harmy is doing here, I'm just pointing things out that I think might be.. "off" in some way, from the way I saw it in the theater in the summer of 1977.

And indeed, if Harmy does go ahead with what he thinks is the way it really should look, and if I or others don't really like a certain thing about it, yes, we could really adjust it to "our liking" (although I have no idea how to do that) that is our prerogative.

It looks like the Senator Screening pictures, taken with whatever camera that it was taken with, has an overall greenish tint to it as well. If you look:  http://savestarwars.com/technicoloribscreening.html  you can tell by looking at the thumbnails even, that there is this overall greenish hue/tint to them, as well as a good amount of graininess of course.

I haven't got 1/20th of the skill that Harmy has to do this project (probably a LOT less even) but I certainly feel, if he wants our opinion, I am going to give it to him in the way that I remember seeing it.

I can vouch for the accuracy of Harmy's references, for sure, and I can also empathize with people's occasionally quizzical reactions to the color timing.  Decades of transfers and inherent expectations "coloring" our perceptions make for a lot of comments like, "Wow...really?" when seeing how it actually was in '77, but...   !

I used to bug Harmy constantly about his version 1.0 being too yellow IMO but at christmas I had a change of heart about how to colour grade the original trilogy and came to a gradual acceptance that the trilogy is meant to be more yellow than i'd been previously thought.

I just had a look at how this shot looks with my most recent colour grading and it looks exactly like his version 1.0 now. Go figure.

Somebody, mverta I think it was you, showed the difference between using a modern bulb and a 70's bulb on a tech IB print. Clearly, the light source plays a part in how the colors appear.

Have the reference frames Harmy is using been created with modern bulbs, or 70's ones?

You also have to keep in mind that the main source Harmy is working with is still the horrible 2004/11 master, even with great Technicolor print references at hand, it's not easy to get this source to look like the original.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

fix the SKINTONES....(waits for czech profanity).

but seriously the far matte shot of mos eisley when ben and luke are looking at it while standing on the ridge looks a tad too yellow.  was it that way originally?

Looking at it again in comparison to a picture someone took of the Senator Technicolor print Harmy's version does look way closer to how it originally appeared. It just seemed odd at first glance, but how it should actually look isn't necessarily how you'd think it should look after becoming so used to the GOUT timing, I guess.

EPISODES I - III ARE PILES OF SHIT

Hay Harmy, on the BD will the DTSHDMA (I'm assuming this is the lossless codec you're using for audio) also have a lossy DTS core? I know nothing about the technical side of these things, or if that DTS core is automatically included in every DTSMA track (as it is with standard retail BD releases) but I was just wondering if it would automatically strip out the DTS lossy track from the lossless when that's selected and send it out optical if I choose to watch it with that setup. My 5.1 system and receiver isn't hooked up right now (not enough space) so I can't decode lossless at the moment, I am using a soundbar that accepts standard DTS, though.

OK, a lot of posts since I last checked but to the main issue; the colours: I think everything that needed to be said was said by others. Thank you guys who backed me up on this, so I don't have to argue the points myself :-)

I also checked those screening photos again and they're surprisingly accurate for what they are.

As to the sound formats, to be honest I have no idea about the technical side of it and I plan to cross that bridge when I get to it.

A DTSHDMA track contains a lossy DTS core plus extensions that are added to make is lossless. So yes, the core is always there.

No. I wanted to but they mostly look worse than the GOUT or are incomplete.
