One with The ForceYes, Star Wars' color is legendarily inconsistent, and nowhere is that more apparent than on the surviving Tech IB prints, whose colors haven't faded!

That's what I wanted to point out about your color references. The only non-debatable source anymore is the IB Tech prints.
@mverta: Thanks for helping out over here, and thanks for an interesting website!

Jedi of the Mosaic FaithWhere are you getting these shots of a tech IB print? the only one I've seen are the ones from the Senator theater at kaminski's site

Looks great! It baffles me as to why they did not fix the obvious color issues with this shot for the 2004 release.
BTW - did you take a look at the shot of Ben's hut after ErikStormtrooper's comment yesterday about all the pixelated noise? I assume you already know about it - just checking.
Thanks.

I've been fortunate enough to have seen a few other surviving Tech IB prints, all in better condition than the Senator print.

30:54 - The sky around Ben's hut looks pixelated (especially on the right side), as if it was brightened too much.
I see what you mean, I wouldn't say it's pixelated, it seems to be a similar issue to what I get when upping the saturation, this time it was caused by improper use of the "change colour" effect. Thank you for noticing, I'll definitely fix it.
Mike, would you please take a look at my new clip and tell me if the saber colour is at least close to the way it looks on the IB prints?

I love the brightness.
I love the colours.
I love the details.
I love how the saber looks.
BUT ...
The original remote had a black outline : https://plus.google.com/photos/102542760950977079734/albums/5514974191245813441/5553601144067443010?banner=pwa - do you plan to "restore" it ? If not, I FULLY understand why :-)

Now that you say that, I believe I recall seeing this same thing in the carbon freezing room in ESB DeEd 1.0. But that's for another discussion, I guess. :)

I just did that in one shot as a test. I'm still not decided whether to do it with all of them.

Nice work. I assume the Special Edition 2.0 is the Blu-ray? I thought it was much too dark, besides the colors being off when I watched it. Yours looks great and it is easier to see the details.

Loved the clip. Colors look really natural. Thanks for all the hard work.
I don't want to sound annoying, but is August still the earliest this will be released or do you think earlier?

If it takes until August for Harmy to restore the original luminance of the remaining star fields (my God the opening crawl is so incredible now), then it will be well worth the wait!

That is some damn impressive work you have done, Harmy. I do not understand how you can cope with all this. If I may put forth my opinion about the never ending discussion about the colors of the saber in the Falcon, what I recall and what I have seen on most sources, the saber was leaning more towards cyan in the wide-shots but was more blue in the close-ups.
IMO the many minor "inconsistencies" on the sabers from shot to shot is what made the original sabers to look so damn impressive and real in the first place, maybe it was a stroke of luck but an photographed object shouldn't look identical in every environment, angle and lightning condition etc. especially when that object is moving. If they are completely consistent you'll end up with an prequel saber which IMO look much more fake.
I haven't seen any of your work yet but I think I'll have to swallow my purist stance and check this out when it's ready. The pics I'm seeing of your work look very impressive! :)
Just an observation and minor nitpicking, I think you could have gotten even better results on the remote sequence if you had utilized JSC LD-footage for some of the de-specializing as I'm seeing artifacts caused by the GOUT DVNR on some of your effect elements in those pics - the split saber and wavy remote beam, but I don't think you'll have to worry as you're only seeing these artifacts on a still image.
Incredible work Harmy!
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Han D. SoloActually, I thought the split sabre was a DVNR artefact until I noticed that it's there in the SE as well and even more visible, since the original element seems to have been recomped with an unreasonable level of sharpness and low contrast, so it seems to have always been there.

Yes, that one is just the prop that is visible.
I'm talking about this one:
GOUT

JSC LD (V8)

The shape of the remote laser beams were affected by the DVNR in most of the shots as well, but then again you will not notice these artifacts in motion, so it doesn't really matter.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Han D. SoloOh, right, I see. I wonder if the JSC has the same kind of lens distortion that causes the GOUT to be very very difficult to overlay over the SE.

ok so i started watching the workprint and recording all the parts with dancing greys due to brightening but once i got to the death star meeting room with all the generals i stopped because it pretty much became continuous since that scene is very dark in nature. on the contrary on really bright scenes the dancing greys are not there. here are most of the scenes before the death star meeting room with dancing greys.
5:11-5:13
6:19-6:22 <---when c3po says "hey you're not permited in there its restricted"
6:28-6:29 <---when c3po says "you overweight glob of grease"
6:31-6:33 <---right before c3po says "secret mission, what plans?"
6:39-6:40 <---right before c3po says "i'm goin to regret this"
6:45-6:48 <---when the pod is shot out i noticed greys around it..intentional?
6:49-6:54 <---"hold your fire there's no life forms it must have short circuited" mostly on the back of the guy on the left
12:35-12:42 <---alot of dvnr smearing on the jawas as they take r2 to the sand crawler in the background
12:55-13:49 <--alot of dancing greys especially in the vaccume tube as it comes down to suck up r2
14:23-14:32 <---de'se'd shot of sand crawler
14:51-15:01 <---taps r2, "wake up"
that's as far as i got. they really look like compression artifacts brought out by brightening. I don't think it's my media player because i played the workprint in media player classic, vlc, and windows media player and still noticed them.
does anyone else notice these? It might be my monitor settings.
I guess you could make the case that it is extra detail uncovered from the crushed blacks but they look unnatural. when i'm in a dark room i don't notice grey pixels dancing around.
i don't want to seem like i'm trying to tell you how to do your job though...because you are obviously very good at it :-)
Where's my damn medal?
