skimed through the work print and the middle shot kind of bothered me

mainly because the sky colors are so different. the first shot comes almost immediately before and the third shot immediately after.  can you color correct the middle one or possibly rotoscope v1s sky in?

Yeah, that might also have bothered Lucas. It would certainly explain why he had them change the sky in the SE ;-)

I haven't seen the workprint yet, but I would lean away from changing colors for aesthetic reasons, lest we slip down the same mudbank that grabbed Lucas.   :)

It might also explain why he keeps changing them.  If he scatters the changes over a few decades, it's a lot harder to keep track of which inconsistencies were there from the beginning!

Oh my! Looking at those V1 & V2 comparisons you posted on the last page harmy...

In V2 you can clearly see a detailed reflection of Captain Antilles in Darth Vader's eye.... AWESOME!

I'm sorry if you've already answered this Harmy, but what was your primary reference for the new colors this time around? Puggo Grande? Senator?

One of my favorite color changes is the sunlight coming in when the Sandcrawler opens up onto the Lars homestead. It's reflected in 3P0's color in that scene. Though of course, as someone else said here, aesthetics is not the goal...

Actually, my main reference is still the GOUT and whenever there are other sources, I evaluate them as well. In that sunlight shot I was trying to get it to look more like in the GOUT.

Puggo Grande should not be used as a colour reference (and I'm sure Puggo would agree) since it's sourced from a fairly faded print.

Well I've seen a couple of scenes and for the most part I LOVE what I've seen :-) The only thing I don't like are the colours of the desert sequence

You're right, Puggo doesn't make much sense; didn't think that one through.

I'm hoping that the stormtrooper's line "Close the blast doors!" during the Death Star hallway chase will be restored. They shout it just before Han and Chewy jump through the closing doors.  It sets up the next line - "Open the blast doors!" and makes them look like such bumbling idiots. Why it was ever removed I have no idea.

Actually, even in 1977 that line was only included in the mono mix and since my release will offer all three original mixes (albeit in some cases reconstructions) the line shall be in the mono mix.

"Close the Blast Doors!"

My God you rock, there are multiple soundtrack mixes here.  Good lord I'm impressed.

The line was an unfortunate addition to the original stereo and surround mixes, as the dramatic purpose of stormtroopers isn't to be bumbling idiots.  If they're bumbling idiots, the audience has no reason to fear for the good guys being chased by them, there is no tension in the pursuit, and nothing at stake.  Filmmaking 101.  Just as the CG additions of slapstick comedy at the start of the Mos Eisely sequence instantly undoes Obi-Wan's warning of how dangerous and villainous the town is, undermining the bad guys undermines the heroes, and destroys the drama. You keep the stormtroopers a threat, and let the audience just be grateful for every missed shot. It's only during the car ride home that it occurs to viewers that stormtroopers can't hit the broad side of a barn... unless you've tipped them off that they're idiots...

Like most changes in the mono mix, it is the result of over-thinking, and tweaking well past the often superlative first instincts.  I'm glad the mono mix has remained essentially ignored for the past 30+ years.

I couldn't agree more with Mike; I've always hated that blast doors line as it's needless revisionism. I'm only interested in the original 70mm mix (reconstruction in this case), so thankfully I won't have to deal with it.

One piece from the mono I do like though is Luke saying "Blast it Wedge, where are you?" as opposed to saying Biggs. It just makes more sense and I wish it was in the stereo mix.

Except for the changing sky shots, I really liked the desert scene colouring - it has that blisteringly hot and hazy feel to it, with the sun bleached sand. It was at that point I realised I was totally immersed in this.

I haven't completely watched the whole WP yet, but some select scenes, and I liked what I saw. Good job as always Harmy!

After working a lot with restoring the GOUT, I realize how extremely screwed up the colors in the blu-ray version are. You're doing a good job regrading the movie. Maybe some scenes here and there could use a saturation boost? Or maybe I think that just because I'm used to looking at the color-restored GOUT now.

OK, so I am about half way through the workprint so far, and I am very excited about it!  However, I do have one thing that I noticed.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If you look to the left of C3PO, although it seems brighter than V1.0, it almost starts to get a little pixelated through the brightness.  V1.0 was a darker shot overall, and the rest of the shot looks much better in V2, but there are a few times in this same sequence where Owen is talking to C3PO where this happens.

Other than this, it looks great so far.  I will be sure to let you know if I find anything else.
