The pandown is a 2D animation of a premade matte and I didn't manipulate it's brightness in AE, so there shouldn't be any flicker.
I do see an artifact though. It begins at the bottom of the frame and moves up to the top during your pandown. Its ending position is where the blockade runner enters frame. It lasts through the entire shot:

Seems as good a place as any for my first post. Fantastic work on these. I just recently discovered all of this and the work you've done is pretty astounding.
Hope everyone had a good Christmas/Hanukkah.

Well, I have to admit I am a fence sitter here on the whole star intensity thing. I do remember them being bright but whether they were that bright or not, not sure anymore. I was 11 when I saw Star Wars and back then most Sci-Fi used a bright starscape. I am one to compromise and would tone the stars down just a little.... but I am fine as they are. It just might be that the images we are seeing have such clarity its throwing it off a little. Just like being able to see the pores on peoples faces. :) Thats HD for you.
AND this opening shot alone made me fall in love with Star Wars. I would pay $12 today to see that opening scene alone on the big screen again. Its the best opening scene of any film i can remember. Prove me wrong. lol.
Harmy, great work, appreciate the effort you have been putting in.
Everyone keep in mind that what we saw in 1977 was on film, it was probably grainy as well and now that we get to see them with clarity and correction... we are going to be seeing Star Wars in a different way. We need to just enjoy it. Thanks again and keep going Harmy.
PS - Lets not all go George Lucas on this and start making mistakes like he did... getting all perfectionist to the point we end up with what he did. Its about getting close to the originals. We will never get them back in their entirety, well not until the 60 years is up and the Library of Congress lets us in to see the prints they have. Lets enjoy what Harmy is doing for the fanbase. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!

Nice new clip, Harmy. I like the stars. I noticed that there seems to be black mask around the edges of the star destroyer; this mask seems to eat up stars before they're actually blocked by the ship's edge.
;) <------
I noticed the black matte line as well especially when the SD passes over the moon/planet on the left side. Very noticeable in comparison V.1

This is also visible in puggo's 16 mm transfer.
I think that black matte is as theatrical as can be.

BTW. Sorry, guys, been really busy today, so tomorrow I'm gonna go through all the posts and answer everything.

The Hutt, c'est moi.I hate being the only guy against it, but I personally think the stars are in fact too bright. To the amount that they start to distract from the actual text.

Han D. SoloOK, to the stars - they stay this bright. This is not a whim of mine or anything, it's based on hard evidence that some of you may have seen. All evidence points towards the stars being this bright in the original; even the GOUT stars are this bright, only the faded levels make them kind of greyish but they are this big.
@jabbo5150: Thank you :-)

Cool. If I/we had the originals at hand this would not have come up I guess. lol
Its hard to be objective here. This is a very good example I would like to stress again why people have to be careful about becoming a perfectionist and end up what GL did. Its easy to see issues including the ones of the time of the original release. Thanks for clarifying for all of us. Cheers!

The 70mm scans also support the bright starfields. See this thread. (Interestingly, when you compare that shot on imageshack to the same one on jedi1.net, I see a slight levels difference.)

Han D. SoloThat image was actually one of the sources I was talking about (albeit a minor one, since it's a different shot).
That shot, when compared with the video transfer also shows really nicely how when scanned properly the garbage mattes are invisible.

As someone who has seen the film projected last summer, I can say that I do recall the starfield being bright and vivid... not dull and muted. Great job Harmy!

does this mean you will be brightening all the stars through out the movie?
Where's my damn medal?
Harmy
This user is offline.
Han D. SoloNo, not really. Or rather, not this much - all the stars will be brighter than in the SE simply because the film is being made brighter over-all but they can't be made this bright without rotoscoping everything else in the frame and I'm most definitely not doing that for every shot that has a starfield. I just wanted to restore these super-iconic shots to their full former beauty.

First, I'd just like to thank Harmy for everything. I am a big fan of what you're doing, and I think your work is genuinely important. You are scrubbing the metaphorical painted mustache off of the Mona Lisa.
Second, and this is where I will sound wholly ignorant, I looked at a lot of the posts on your projects and I'm still at a slight loss for the scope of your work. It seems like you're still working on the DEs, but do you release upgraded versions? And do you have plans to use the new blu rays to help the process?
Thank you for any answers you can provide. And again, thank you for the work.

Han D. SoloHi :-) Welcome to the forum. Take a look around, you may find other interesting projects around here.
And yes, there's a Despecialized Edition v1.0 currently available and I'm working on a much improved version 2.0 using the BD as one of the sources.

Do you intend to brighten the stars in the final credits too as you did in the opening crawl ?

Han D. SoloWe actually already tried that and it didn't look too great. I'm going to try and come up with some compromise/alternative.

V2 is a really big improvement on the colour scheme on V1 in this comparison. So much more warmth and natural tones now. Everything looks blue and silverish in V1, good example being C-3P0. In V2 C-3P0 is a real nice gold!
I can wait for this as I know its going to be worth it when it comes out. Trying not to watch too many clips before then = so it can blow my mind in one massive hit!
