You could also slightly decrease the brightness of the initial stars (which would be a shame since they look hot).  Or, alternatively, you could have the brighter stars become progressively less bright as they go down--right now the transition is a very obvious horizontal line, maybe it'd be less of a problem if it was a less distinct boundary between the two brightness levels.

I can't speak for him but I think he is doing the theatrical version which he has said many times.

Yeah Troyig88 I know, which is why I find a change like this a little strange to say the least, not to mention introducing problems with continuety.

At face value it seems very unlike Harmy, that has always put the utmost importance in reproducing the theatrical release as accurately as possible. Were the stars that bright during the scroll in the theatrical release? Is there a source that suggests that they were? I'm not old enough to have seen the theatrical release in the cinemas so I have no idea whatsoever. I'm pretty sure they're not that bright in the GOUT and they're definately not in the blu-ray either. It'd be nice to hear from Harmy why he decided that the stars needed to be brightened so much.

Even if you had seen the film in 77/78 in the theater like I did there is no way you would remember how bright the stars were....

Speak for yourself. What a presumptuous statement. Please turn down the ego just a bit. I saw the movie in theater DOZENS of times , and yes the stars were very bright and visible.

Really? Give me a break! There is NOW WAY THAT ANY OF US can remember exactly how bright the starrs were in a film from 33 years ago! No way in HELL! I saw the film 34 times in the theater from May 25th 1977 all the way through July of 1978 and I can honestly say there is no way I can remember what they looked like back then!

You must not be a very big fan then. This movie was such a moving experience some of us can remember small details down to what we had to eat during the movie and yes, even how bright and awe inspiring the star fields were that helped make the movie iconic.

I couldn't care in the least if you can't remember shit, but don't make blanket statements that assume that everybody is as dense as you are.

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

Now, that's it, no surprise video today! Don't cry, you brought it upon yourselves!

Just kidding, today was pretty hectic (last minute xmas shopping and stuff) and I didn't have time to finish what I wanted.

Also, I tried and there's no way I'm redoing that starfield, it's just too much fuss. It looks fine to me, since it's a part of a pan down, it's not a cut or even a fade.

Harmy, can you selectively make just  a few of the stars over the planet brighter? That might make the transition less noticeable.

Nah, that would be possibly even more complicated, having to track a few separate stars instead of the whole starfield...

I must say I'm quite disappointed in you guys; making a blatantly careless decision like that, I expected a huge backlash and you didn't say a word. I need you guys to motivate me to do the best job I can...

Bright and pretty!

Harmy, how many hours does it take to do that work?

awesome.  great work.

There is a slight but noticeable flicker towards the end of the pan where the brightness levels go up and down.  Might need to tweak that a bit, but otherwise looks great!

Thanks guys.

I don't see the flicker. Anybody else sees this? Can you give a time where that happens? The pandown is a 2D animation of a premade matte and I didn't manipulate it's brightness in AE, so there shouldn't be any flicker.

@Flynn: By a rough estimate, all the work that went into this clip took about 10 hours. With the crawl and receding logo about 30hrs.

Just wanted to wish everyone here a merry christmas. I haven't been a member for long, but already I've found good friends and I'm looking forward to spending the next year with you guys as well!

And I'll take a look on the new clip later tonight Harmy.

Nice new clip, Harmy. I like the stars. I noticed that there seems to be black mask around the edges of the star destroyer; this mask seems to eat up stars before they're actually blocked by the ship's edge.

In terms of the stars flickering, I do notice that they change in intensity during the pan down, but stay at the same brightness once the camera stops.

So the clip before this one was a test to see how much we'd complain? Well, at least I said something. Note to myself: be a picky jerk in Harmy's thread.

The matte is there on purpose, there's a huge matte line around the star destroyer in the original :-)

I'm having Christmas with the fam right now and don't have access to the clip, but I'll try to post an example later.  The brightness definitely goes up and down right before the end of the pan and then stabilizes precisely when the camera stops.
