When it comes to the whole color thing.  I stay out of it. Because I simply don't know.

I did think of something that might be a good reference. Before they did the last video release of the OUT in 1993-94,  Topps release a set of Star Wars widescreen cards.   It was said it was take from the one of the film masters.  Now how true that is I don't know.

Has anyone ever seen any of these? The color on those looks real good to me. I am sure there is a site that post most of them.

Just trying to be of some help.

Troy.

That ebay listing has the best photos of the cards I've found so far. No one seems to have ever scanned them in, unfortunately.

@Mike: You're right of course, Mike. But the thing is that for you the best colour sources are IB Tech prints, which is a source I would be willing to trust at least in the sense that that's what the film looked like in some theatres back in 1977, and since I think 100% perfection is not only unnecessary but impossible (because the way this works, every IP would have had slightly different colours, so there is no one 100% correct colour grading) I'd happily settle for pretty much what it looked like originally (as opposed to 2004 DVD's and 2011 BD's miles and miles away from what it looked like originally) and every singe of those IB tech prints on it's own should represent pretty much what it looked like originally.

But for me the best source for the most part is the GOUT and then photos that someone took of a cinema projection of a print that you yourself graded as a C+, so I was hoping for some insight I couldn't get from these sources, that wouldn't necessarily help me achieve 100% perfection, but a pretty much original look.

@ww12345: The Dewback is supposed to move slightly, it does in all the original video transfers I have.

@Jaitea: Yeah, that was a bitch to try and get these two a little closer to each other (because in the first one I used the GOUT chroma over the whole picture and the 2nd one had the SE colours) and the green shadows is something I missed, so thanks, I'll see what I can do about it.

@Troy: I've never seen those cards. Do you have them? Could you scan and upload pictures?

I got a few of them about thirty. Yeah, I will see do.  It may be tomoorw. But yeah.

I was watching V1 one and really enjoying it.  There was something I notice. I don't know why I have always like this, When Vader's ship is flying out of control you could always see the rod connected to the model,

I guess for the 2004 they fix that. Is there anyway you could put that back in?

ok I found the cards.  I also have a 1996 star wars calendar   that has some stunning pictures.

They are about the same sizes as the cards.

Theses images are from 1996 . It really makes me believe that there is something far better than that laser disc master they used,IMHO.

I have about 30 or 40 of the TOPPS widescreen cards.

You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

If the scans of those cards that Troy just sent me are any indication of what they actually look like, they can definitely not be used as a colour reference.

Why?  can you post an example?  not disagreeing with you, just curious.

Troy, do those images match the card colors?  I would be willing to grab that whole set off ebay and scan them, but if they really look like that it seems that it would be a waste of money.

I now have a yearning for that oblong of chalky brick-hard, flavour-gone-in-ten-chews, bubblegum. Loved that, every Tuesday, as much as I'm lovin how this is going. Sweets!

The ones that Harmy posted are the metallic foil versions

RE: reference images - topps widevision cards

i have 116/120 of them...

what happened to those cards?

mine have been untouched since they came out of

the foil, stored in a binder, in the dark since i first got them..

yes, a lot of them have a weird tint to them.. not sure if

that is due to the glossy covering? here's my samples,

don't be so quick to discard them (some have a

little blurriness, and moire patterns, but thats due

to my scanner) :

Well, I just chose the worst examples, some of Troy's scan look better than that but my point was that if some look like that, how can we be sure that those that look good are actually correct colours. If they have metallic gloss, you probably can't really scan them properly. Prints like that fade just as much, if not more than film, so they could be faded as well. I guess if they're stored properly, they could be quite acurate to what they looked like when they came out. But again, there's no guarantee that their colours were correct then.

no one's should be saying these are correct.

it's just that some could be used as ANOTHER reference

in addition to books, cell scans, film strips, etc.

i'm scanning them all anyways, now that i found them.

none of mine are faded, as i mentioned.

Just thought I'd point out that in the world of trading cards, they'll sometimes release the metallic ones and the regular ones, because the world of collecting is insane. Obviously we want the regular type.

Yes, I'm pretty sure the only way you could make the color situation worse is to enter the murky world of offset printing. :)  Even experts in printing will tell you it's mostly voodoo and just about every color they want to represent ends up out of gamut ;)
