Han D. SoloI'll be using the matte painting of the soldiers:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mR0NSOdzM4U
As to the lightsabres, I'm taking the same approach as with Empire, I'll be rotoscoping a few but most of the time just brightening and colour-correcting them. For some lightsabre scenes I'm actually gonna use Ady's AVCHD because he already fixed a lot of the issues with the lightsabres and it's just too much work to do all over.

Hell yes, that looks pretty damn sweet!
Is this final though? Are you going to use all of the original painting or just the part with the soldiers in the foreground?

Reginald ScumHmm. Personally I'm not really sold on putting that matte painting of the soldiers back in, because the difference in quality between it and the surrounding footage is just too great not to be noticed. That was one of the small things the SE actually improved on, I think, although I probably wouldn't mind the original shot if there were a high resolution source for it.

I am ready for the OOT!The Blu-Ray set will not have the OOT. Harmy, you're our only hope!
Not to put pressure on you or anything ;)
You know of the rebellion against the Empire?

Hey Harmy can you post a video of the SE version of that matte painting? Sorry to be so gay about this, but I've never seen the SE version. Oh man I can't wait for ANH to be complete. I don't mean to press you, but if you had to take a wild ass ball park guess, when do you think ANH will be completed...weeks...months? I'll go watch ESB again while I wait for your response.

Han D. SoloI think I'll just leave the trooper matte the way it is in the video I posted as using the pillar part of the matte would just make it too noticeable, this way you're only seeing the troopers peripherally, so it looks good IMO.
I'm still struggling with the crawl right now and man is it giving me headaches! I thought it was all done now only to find out it speeds up weirdly towards the end, so I'll have to re-time and re-render it again and it takes like 3 hrs to render that one shot because I'm using two 3D layers :-(

That's good; I'm sure it will be worth the wait. It's amazing that a few guys with computers can do in a few months what we've been wanting LFL to do for over a decade.

Chief Architect of Cynical MoralityYou also have to keep in mind that Lucas still has the mattes. He could recreate the originals in superHD.ator said:

Han D. SoloOK, finally, I'm proud to present the original STAR WARS 1977 crawl in HD. It's not 100% perfect but I'm quite satisfied with it :-)

Here's a new version of the Falcon in the DS bay matte enhanced using this technicolour screening photo (original GOUT matte is top, the new enhanced one is bottom):

You made that from a sideways picture of a movie screen?

I keep my friend who took those Technicolor Screening pics posted on when his stuff gets used, and he's amazed at this. He also wishes he had known about the want for this sort of thing so he could have used a tripod, less off-center. But so it goes...

Han D. SoloI'm glad he likes it and I'm glad he took at least some pics :-) But it's a pity he didn't know before, not only could he have taken higher quality pics but he could also have taken pics of some more original matte paintings, as those would have been an invaluable source for this kind of thing :-(
Also, Looking for some SW pictures I randomly stumbled across this site and I found, to my surprise, that it featured my my HD crawl recreation video. So please give me a vote :-)
Anyway, having found out that it may reach a wider audience, I decided to write a detailed commentary for the crawl on you tube, so I'll repost it here:
Here is my May the 4th (be with you) present to all STAR WARS fans, to at least slightly compensate for the disappointment of the Blu-Ray announcement :-D
This is a recreation of the original 1977 crawl using the original elements - I took the STAR WARS logo and each separate line as they first appear in Dark_Jedi's 720p upscale of the 2006 DVD crawl, luma-keyed them out from the background, hand erased the remaining stars, straightened them up in photoshop and made the whole original crawl text in 2D.
Then I used the 2D crawl as a 3D layer in AE, copied the movement of the original logo and crawl and superimposed it over the starfield in HD taken from the HD broadcast of the 2004 SE (which is surprisingly the same one as in the original, it just needed some brightening for it to show). Additionally I gradually sharpened the area of the first three bottom lines and slightly blurred the crawl at the top of the screen, to simulate depth of field. The result isn't 100% perfect but I think it's not half bad either :-)
And the 2D crawl I made for this can be found here as a photoshop PSD file :-)

Believe me, with a little more planning, notice and awareness of this site, I would have tried to get an HD camcorder on a tripod into that place. Or something. That would have been nice.
