I just picked up Johnathan Strage and Mr. Norrell from the library today. Anyone read it? I hear it's really engaging, but I don't know if I should start it with three other books on the go.

King: Yes, pretty much everyone says the same thing about sticking with his earlier stuff. My dad is a huge King fan and can barely tolerate any of his current/newer stuff. He's always enjoyed the Bachman Books more than almost any of King's work. Although, I can't imagine anyone being worse than Anne Rice at running at the mouth...3 pages to describe a blade of grass, please oh please...

I heard somewhere that the Bachman book "Rage" was pulled from the shelves because it deals with shooting up a school, and a kid that shot up a school had a copy in his locker when it was searched. Is this true?

Also, any H.P. Lovecraft fans in the house?

Just finished The Book of 3, the first in Alexander Lloyd's The Chronicles of Prydain series. Good book. Now I must find the sequel book, The Black Cauldron.

And the hell of it is that I still haven't finished Equal Rites, Earthsea, Ringworld or any of the Conan stories. And on top of that, I'm only halfway through The City of Ember.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an Obi-Wan to go.

Red heads ROCK. Blondes do not rock. Nuff said.

If it's so damn awful, then why don't you just toss it?

I dunno, I just can't get into the EU books. They're just kinda boring. Maybe I'm just not reading the right ones, but I thought "Shadows of the Empire" was just OK, and I only got about half-way through the first "Rogue Squadron" book before I tossed it.

Gonna start a Anthony Burgess biography.
“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” — Nazi Reich Marshal Hermann Goering

I read "Indiana Jones and the Seven Veils", as well as the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" novelization. Not the best books in the world, but they were ok.

This is a thread that's gone by the way side. Anyone reading anything good right now? I'm reading "American Gods" by Neil Gaiman. I've just recently discovered his work. MAN, he is awesome.
Just noticed this thread. I've just joined my local library and whilst browsing, re-discovered Neil Gaiman. I'm mixing up some Sandman, Death, and Magic along with his collaboration with Terry Pratchett - Good Omens (OMG - too funny !!!)

How do you co-write a book anyway?

I also picked up American Gods but haven't started it yet.

It's been a while since I've read anything, too busy watching all these fan edits.

where have i been all this time ?

I'm reading Star Wars: Vision of the Future. It's not bad as far as EU goes I guess.

You bounce ideas off eachother, pick holes in the others ideas, and decide what works and what doesn't. One person would usually do the bulk of the actual writing, although the other can tweak it. That's how me and my co-writing buddy do it anyway.

War does not make one great.

They just re-issued a new hardcover edition of Good Omens, and it has a foreward by the authors explaining their co-writing experience

"Wow. I'm surprised to hear you like the prequels. Seems like they were none too popular w/Dune fans, but I eventually will give them a try."

They certainly aren't of the same caliber, and I can definitely understand why staunch fans wouldn't like them, but I do find them interesting. The House series is pretty good, but the older series is kinda thin, and there are a lot of parts that are just kinda dropped in, rather than intricately woven into the story.

It's still better than that damned god-awful Jedi Academy trilogy......right, AWK?

"and I only got about half-way through the first "Rogue Squadron" book before I tossed it."

Wow, I LOVED that series. I was sad to see it end.

"How do you co-write a book anyway?"

Take turns writing every other word?

MeBeJedi: Sadly, I believe the prequels are beyond repair.
JediRandy: They’re certainly beyond any repair you’re capable of making.

MeBeJedi: You aren’t one of us.
Go-Mer-Tonic: I can’t say I find that very disappointing.

JediRandy: I won’t suck as much as a fan edit.

I READ THAT ONE. IT'S PRETTY GOOD. THE BOOK THAT I'M READING NOW COMES AFTER THAT AND SPECTRE OF THE PAST.

i read the da vinci code during xmas break. and i'm going to start reading angels and demons once my finals are over. my best friend gave me my belated bday present last week and its a book called Brahma's Dreams. last night i wasn't in the mood to write in my diary or read cosmo or study for my lab test so i started reading that book as it was in arms reach. it's actually pretty good. i'm reading it pretty slow tho cuz i'm not entirely into it and i know i can't get into it since its crunch time. but yeah apparently its had some really good reviews.

~* you know you love me... xoxo *~

I recently finished three books, actually. In the past two weeks, I've finished Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke, The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco, and When War Played Through: Golf in World War II by some guy. I now turn my attentions to Q by Luther Blissett.

I've been reading "The Time Machine Did It" by John Swartzwelder.

John was the writer for over 50 Simpsons episodes, however is NOT a Simpson's novelization of any kind, but it has alot of the same type of humor that John has brought to the show.

If any of you have ever listened to the commentary tracks on the existing Simpsons DVDs, you'll notice that they point out John's jokes quite often...they also plugged this book, which is where i heard about it.

It's a quick read, witty, funny, highly amusing & i would definately recommend it to anybody

Next on the list: THUD! Terry Pratchett's latest Discworld novel

I actually just ordered "The Time Machine Did It" and I can't wait for it go get here. Amazon has the first few pages on line. I read it and laughed my 'hinder' off. Oh BOY!!
