The Sandtrooper is the best by a mile. The rest range from good 'ESB Boba' to meh 'R2'. R2 isn't even the right shade of blue.

eliminate the movie post-production process.

...No it won't. Not unless you CG everyone and have everyone do everything (music included) in a single take. Barring that there's still going to be post. Also there's a point in the vid where two people pass through one another 0:55... Also even if they are able to fix such things immediately after the take that is still after the fact, you know, post. Also I just wanted to used the word "also" again and no I didn't want wait for another sentence to use two "also"s. Also they'd still have to deal with the actors lines being heard and making sure that their lines aren't being drowned out unexpectedly by the other actor breathing into the mic. Again even if they fix those things immediately after the take that is still post. Also they're assuming anyone would want to be tied down to a single take for their film. Also subtitles for any alien languages or even any other language than the film's primary language. That too would need to be ironed out in post. Also they'd still need to add the credits in post. Also if you try to eliminate the "post-production process" then pick up shoots would be out of the equation too. Since that too is after the fact and you'd have to edit that material into the film in post. Deciding to focus the camera on another actor instead of who you did in the first take? Yeah not if Lucasfilm gets their way. The process of post also gives the filmmaker's time to think about the story more and possibly make it better. Removing post isn't going to happen.

This post on the other hand is going to be posted.

Very articulate. Here's Luke Bespin from wave 3 which shows a lot of the movable parts.

Wave 1 (now) Luke Skywalker X-Wing Pilot, Sandtrooper, R2-D2, Darth Maul.

It's a trap!

Luke's sabre isn't as blue as the pictures would make you think.  The one I saw at Target had a very seagreen sabre- like the so-called "training sabre" that is totally an artisitc plot-driven change to ANH and not just a colour timing goof, because they don't make goofs.

A set of fun facts gleaned from an advance copy of Rinzler's Making of ROTJ.

Including this tidbit:

...a running theme in the book is that everybody except Lucas hated the Ewoks, those invincible teddy bears. They were a sticking point at every stage of production, and concept artist Ralph McQuarrie refused to work on designs for them once he realized what Lucas actually wanted.

I didn't think it was possible for me to love Ralph McQuarrie and his work any more than I already did, but apparently I was wrong.

3) George Lucas told Lawrence Kasdan that anyone can use the Force

It's just like doing yoga, Lucas told Kasdan during a marathon story conference. Or karate. "If you want to take the time to do it, you can do it." It just takes practice and concentration. Also, Lucas clarified that a "Jedi Master" like Yoda is different from a Jedi Knight," because "he's a teacher, not a real Jedi." And Yoda is like a Guru, who "doesn't go out and fight anybody." And Yoda wouldn't be any good in a fight, against someone like Darth Vader. Kasdan responded: "I understand what you're saying, but I can't believe it; I am in shock."

What happened to this guy, Jorge Lucas?

RE: General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread

As I recall, much of the art in McQuarrie's ROTJ portfolio was done "after the fact," being made especially for the portfolio and not for the film itself. Which is why many of the ships and creatures in the paintings look suspiciously like their final film counterparts.

If ole Ralph didn't like the direction the film was heading, maybe that's why he stopped doing art for it until it was a finished product. At which point he would bear no responsibility for the quality of the movie itself--instead of being the proud concept artist behind the look of merchandise-driven teddy bears.

Apparently he was happy to work on the film early on though--witness all the concept art he did for the original draft's throne-room sequence on Coruscant. Must be that Lucas and his terrible ideas drove him off (haven't we heard this story before??).

Also, apparently this guy (Alan Webb, an authentically elderly actor born in 1906) was the original choice to play the Emperor back in 1982. Ian McDiarmid was the runner-up. But Webb fell ill (and actually died later that year) so McDiarmid got the nod.

Oddly enough, a couple decades earlier Webb had turned down the part of a crazily-dressed alien doctor on some BBC children's program. The role went to a guy called William Hartnell instead.

If I could own a real lightsaber, I'd own two - one with a red blade, the other with a teal blade.

Oh drat!  I just read this and was about to start it in its own thread, but wanted to see if someone had beat me to it in this thread.  I should have known it'd be you!

In any case, this is really awesome news!

The ROTJ collaborative thread is a wealth of ideas, both on how to edit Return of the Jedi, as well as how to collaborate in an edit.  Emanswfan has taken leadership of the project.

A very rough idea of how ROTJ could end

Rough edit based on the final script with some deviation:

While I don't like the fact that it needed to be explained (midi-what now?) I actually like the Force as an ability that only certain people can access. Makes it more mysterious without giving it a label.

As for Yoda, um... really wish he'd stuck to that.
