Could be he flew for some planetary defense force similar to Naboo's. Likely the route The Clone Wars would take if they do so.

Yeah, there's been quite a few episodes where the Republic (and especially the Jedi) helps some planetary defense force. It'd just be cool to see if they handle Red Leader.

The EU, has (obviously) already handled the reference, but I'd like to see what Filoni and co. could do with it.

He could have simply been a witness to some daring do Anakin performed during the Clone Wars. Ordinary people have crossed paths with heroes in real life throughout history.

It always felt to me like they'd flown together, though.

I think they were started to poke fun at Father Skywalker's hypothetical situations and "what if" scenarios in regards to Moff Jerjerrod surviving the Death Star's explosion and Darth Vader's apparent enlightened dictatorship had the Emperor not been around.

I agree. I had no idea that there were people who would think that the 501st isn't a good organization, or that this is somehow a result of Disney's purchase of Lucasfilm.
