6 Pop Culture Visionaries Who Get Too Much Credit

Of course George is going to land on that list but only at number 5.

6 Pop Culture Visionaries Who Get Too Much Credit wrote:

Even minor characters like C-3PO weren't the juice of Lucas' mindgrapes. Lucas originally wanted 3PO to be an "oily, car salesman type" rather than our lovably gay robot butler friend. If that character archetype sounds familiar, that's because Lucas would later get his sleazy salesman in The Phantom Menace, in the shape of the flying anti-Semitic stereotype, Watto. The actually likeable, not-racist version of C-3PO that we know today was largely thanks to Anthony Daniels. Daniels was originally hired as just a mime inside the gold suit, with someone else providing the voice-over. But actor Stan Freberg convinced Lucas to not use a different voice and stick with Daniels -- which is particularly remarkable since Freberg was one of the actors considered to replace Daniels' voice. That's right: A struggling actor actually had to step up and sacrifice his own livelihood just to kill one of Lucas' terrible ideas.

The franchises I get nerdy about are so obscure that not even most nerds know about them.

any such list should have lucas at number 1 and its not even close.  the list should be like the 1973 belmont with lucas as secretariat.

I like how the list sets the record straight by debunking the talking point that lucas simply 'lost it'.  I like how it provides examples of even things like C3P0.  The list still gives too much credit to gary kurtz.  really, the success of OT was just that lucas was surrounded by a hall-of-fame cast and crew that went far above and beyond the call of duty, the likes of which we may never see again.  give credit for lucas approaching john williams to create a symphonic score as opposed to an electronic synthesized score;  but what john williams ended up created was something no one could have ever imagined - lets not kid ourselves.  another example is ralph mcquarrie and the darth vader costume.  it was mcquarrie first that created the breathing mask based on his own assumptions of the character.

Im not going list out more examples because I think we know all the anecdotes, but I will say that I continue to be surprised that even after 30 years I see more evidence of this.  I have been reading the thread regarding Yoda's speech OT vs PT.  I remember being annoyed at the clumsiness of yoda's dialog, but given the acute problems of the PT, it was way down there (i was more annoyed with the fact that yoda - like every other PT character - was dumber than a bag of rocks).  Based on what Im reading, Kasdan came up with the idea of yoda's dialect and was pretty careful in designing it.  It seems like for the PT, lucas just said 'ok, just cut his sentences in half and switch it around'.

Yoda was always the one character that lucas never seem to provide much of a background and at the same time used him as a cheap gimmick in the PT more than any other character.  so i now believe that in 1979, lucas just thought of yoda as simply 'a really small creature' and nothing more.  and it was kasdan and stuart freeborn that really carried the bulk of the creation.

and now there are reports that even lucas' story of chewbacca (i hit a wookie on the road) being bogus :(

At least we know Lucas created the Ewoks, because no one could be dumber than him to create something like that. Don't forget the editing of the first SW movie, which saved the film as we all know. It could have ended up like one of the prequels without Marcia's work.

Sounding like a broken record since May 2006.

I stumbled upon this blog post, mostly about the Cracked article, but the blogger does add these thoughts:

Still, the plan to redo the original trilogy in 3D is out there, and now Lucas is claiming it wasn't his fault the latest trilogy sucked so bad, it was that technology hadn't caught up to his vision, and he was rushed so the Phantom Menace script wasn't ready yet, and on and on. In the Lucasfilms interview he blames "certain people" he won't name for having JarJar Binks in the film and so on. Basically despite having total control, no editor, and making the movie entirely on his own dime, Lucas is blaming other people for how his movies suck.

I don't see what he's referring to! Have you seen such statements?

This is not a lightsaber. Nor a euphemism.

Given that it's Cracked, strong probability of BS

Fact is, he has been using that excuse numerous times before. That's the excuse that has graced us with stuff like rocks in front of R2, the turd that is CGI Jabba, Jedi Rocks, Darth Vader screaming "NO!" and a dead Hayden Christensen eyeing the woman who's supposed to be his daughter. I wouldn't be surprised if he's still spewing out this crap.

How can one be rushed on a script one supposedly had infinite amount of time to write? He was the producer, director, and editor, who was filming on his own schedule with his own money.

It's probably BS but I had to giggle when I read the bit about having to rush the script and that technology had still not caught up with his vision.

16yrs and TPM is rushed?

What has technology got to do with it?

He had (for one example) a rocket chariot race, with a comedy vegetable stalled on the starting block, I don't think any kind of technology can make that concept fly.

No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? We do not know. All we know is that there will be a big floppy character in it that goes, squawk squawk squawk... who needs a punch up the bracket!"

The ROTJ collaborative thread is a wealth of ideas, both on how to edit Return of the Jedi, as well as how to collaborate in an edit.  Emanswfan has taken leadership of the project.
