GOUT viewing tip. If you have the GOUT DVD’s and are trying to ach them on a 16:9 HD LCD, from my Experian’s they look best if you use Component video. When I Originally upgraded from a 4:3 19” CRT to a 32”16:9 HD LCD I got a DVD player with HDMI and HD up scaling. Most of my 16:9 DVD’s look good. but the GOUT and my other letterbox DVD’s look rather bad. But at some point I plugged my old DVD player in to the TV with Component video and put the GOUT in that. After I zoomed in on the window box and adjusted the settings. (The THX optimizer is somewhat helpful.) I got it to a point where I could watch it. It looks somewhat like letterbox on one of those old 4:3 SD Big Screen Tvs. ?

aka PancakesAny DVD will look better if you watch it using component video, as DVD is an inherently component medium, as opposed to VHS or laserdisc, which are composite media.
I'd recommend looking up some of the fan-made GOUT enhancements, like Dark_Jedi's upcoming V3 DVDs. They're converted to 16:9 anamorphic, and have some cleanup done as well.

Do you mean component VS composite and not VS HDMI, I presume?
This reminded me of something a couple years ago. When I first got my hi def TV (panasionic plasma) I hooked up my DVD player via component cables, I put on the 2004 DVDs, and they looked good! (well, not good but better) The colours weren't blooming and over saturated and looked correct. Then I realized my DVD player had separate colour settings for the different type of output used. Sure enough, it was on the wrong setting. I switched it to component video and BLAM! the dvds looked oversaturated and crappy again. So I switched it back and they looked "good" again. All other dvds on this setting looked terrible. Had very little colour and looked washed out. The DVD player was a panasonic something, I can't remember. It died a while ago. I just thought this was interesting. The 04 dvd were watchable, except for the crushed blacks and crappy SE additions. I guess they weren't watchable after all.

aka PancakesI mean, technically HDMI should look better than component, even on DVD (since it's a digital medium). But the GOUT looking better through analog cables than digital makes sense to me, as that would help to hide some of the more glaring flaws. And the GOUT looking better over component than composite is just (to me, anyway) common sense.

yavasizadooMy GOUT viewing tip is to watch the G-Force/dark_jedi versions. The aliasing and gate weave is soooo much better, plus the fact that you don't have to zoom in on them and the subtitles faithful to the theatrical. V3 is almost out.

I am aware of the fan-made GOUT enhancements however. I have found Obtaining copy’s vary hard. So I have been trying to fined the best way to view the GOUT itself. Using my limited resources.
And I found that component is best for the GOUT as will as all my other non anamorphic DVD’S like Short Circuit and Disney’s the Rocketeer
As for subtitles I have to suggestions. 1 use an LG TV with the ability to move the frame up so there is a big black bar at the bottom for the subtitles and a little black bar at the top
Do you actually need the subtitles any more? LOL

I am ready for the trials!Alas, component outputs are being phased out on new Blu Ray players starting this year, in order to reduce costs and to appease Hollywood.
I wonder if HD sets will have any analog inputs at all in ten years?

All the more reason to just buy older sets!
I'm still rocking an SD tube tv. When I finally get around to upgrading it'll be to a CRT projector.
I have too many old video game consoles and whatnot to live without analog inputs.

I am ready for the trials! There are analog to HDMI converters on the market. I use one with a flat panel whose analog inputs are screwy for my old antique video gear.

...my younger self would've crapped himself if he knew there was a real life toy. and sold his soul for it.
... And they had 'The Empire Strikes Back', the fifth of the four Star Wars films. He is fucking with us numerically, isn't he! "Children, count up to ten." "Four, five, six, one, two, three, ten". No, it goes, four, five, six, one, two, three… No, it goes: four, five, six. One... Two and three have not been made." "Two and three have not been made! What should they be?" "What should they be? With risk of sounding like a smartass, haven't people memorized these films completely? maybe we don't need their soundtrack either?
Sorry, but I've heard this reasoning before about the alien-subtitles and find it weird. To me they're part of the film as much as the classic opening crawl, no matter if you already know what it says. We also know how the film ends, right? ;)
But I can completely understand if some doesn't want re-created ones in the film either as they are not more original than player generated ones.
We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.
Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

Or the picture! I just close my eyes and watch the movie for a few hours at my desk at work every day. I don't get in trouble for watching a movie at work because people just think I'm sleeping. ;-)

Another thing to try, is using the PS3 (if you have one) to upscale it. There are also some video options on the PS3 to make the picture fit to 16:9 and remove some noise. It's not perfect but it's very easy to do and doesn't look as bad as the way some DVD players upscale. :-)

Reginald ScumWell heck, as long as you're talking upscaling, Oppo players are the darlings of the home theatre world, for disc compatibility and picture quality alike, and for much less money than high end products usually cost. They also have flexible and high quality zoom settings that can be used to deal with non-anamorphic titles.

I've never figured out how to make my PS3 zoom in on a windowboxed (Letterbox 4x3 in a 16x9) image. Stupid non-anamorphic DVDs...
