When people posted comments about my Puggo Grande, saying it was great to see SW in its original form, I always was quick to say NO, it's true original form was not a scratchy old print with faded colors. It's original form was a pristine beautiful big screen experience with vibrant realistic colors and glorious sound. This thread is making me very happy, knowing that it is still possible.  I wish I too could have been in Britain for this screening, to see SW in its original form again for the first time in over 30 years.

005: I meant that it futher settles the debate on whether the canyon scene was re-colored in 1993 for the DE--they were right when they said they were making it the way it originally was.

Thanks for the pictures, that print is really something. Everything looks so "right" and matches the idealized version in my head, collected from vague, semi-accurate memories. The sunset scene, those big solid red lasers against the cell block wells (sorry adywan), the look of that great matte painting of the Falcon (that has since been replaced). Also I can't help wondering: if you're this guy who owns the print and you're going back to Britain, do you just put it in the overhead bin? It wouldn't fit, would it? Or it gets checked with the luggage? Jesus, that sounds nerve wracking. Unless the guy is flying on his own private plane, in which case he's just awesome.

Is the collector British? I just assumed he/she was an American who was an acquaintance of the Senator's owner.

Actually, yeah, after some thought, I realized that I don't know that the collector is British - It's the print that is. So, could be and probably is an American who owns it.

(edit) Ah, okay. It would be nice if this news gets around at the big convention in Florida, to counter that weird perception that a "modern audience" just HAS to have the updates.

You would have to have it shipped seperately. If the owner is British, he probably just sent the reels over for the screening. Would still be expensive though, since the half dozen reels weigh something like 100 pounds.

You still have to check it in at customs.

Man, I sure hope he doesn't request the print get destroyed afterward.  I recall - was it Adywan? - someone mentioning a local theater having to hand over a print they showed for the 30th Anniversary.

I’ll give the print when you take it from my cold dead fingers.

Oh, July 21st has come and gone. Did it get a screening?

Oh, looks like I crapped out on an exclusive screening in the UK. sigh

Only the originals from the 70mm six-track Dolby stereo Dolby format 42 will sound better on DVD/Bluray.

Well I’m no damn youngster and I know its somewhere in the middle of Baltimore. Sounds like one of those monster movies hound of the Baskervilles.

If anyone saw it you should have asked if you can take pictures of the print under lightbox to capture the quality and condition of the print.

I'm still shocked that there is a privately owned Technicolor print. This is really the holy grail outside of access to the Lucasfilm archives. It looks like it hasn't been shown too much as well, judging by how little scratching and dirt there is. It could easily be digitally cleaned and made into a new 2K master if every official source were to be lost.

Wow George Lucas owes us some explication about how this print survived the test of time. I’m surprised the colour is holding up. Yeah this print should be given some tender care top priority into ensuring it stays this way for many more years.

Seeing the old BBFC “U” certificate haven’t laid eyes since the last time I saw it 1983 at triple bill all three star wars films.

The UK release was cold nippy December 26th 1977

I just checked the date release with my phone by scrolling back and it was (Saturday December 31st 1977) because me, and friend sneaked in back exit LOL. It was around second showing in the day and the nights get dark and I had to get home so I missed what happened after the cantina scene? Did Han really shoot first?

I saw it with group of kids about a week later around January 1978.

Is it not possible this is re-issue print, did Technicolor produce any re-issue prints around early 80’s? or is this the only one of its kind from late 1977.

Good idea. (The force.net and the official site have a blurb every time a new sticker book comes out but didn't mention this.)

It's quite possible that this is the same print that Richard W. Haines had an opportunity to buy.

BTW- here's an article he wrote recently about Technicolor:

Technicolor dye- transfer prints are not prone to fading because they don't use chemical emulsion.

The last dye-transfer labs in the US and England were closed by the late '70s so, no, they did not produce any prints in the 1980s.

Anyone wanting to know about the history of Technicolor should "take the tour":

My God that print's a thing of absolute beauty isn't it!!! THAT'S EXACTLY how the future Blu-ray should look (or one of the versions anyway).

Looks like the pre-THX laserdisc had a colour balance which was pretty close to this print, apart from the un-darkened canyon scene.

Man by the looks of things they really did this print justice - black levels and contrast etc all look spot on. I wish I'd been there!

Ah nice one - great stuff!:)

Knowledge is power, and the more people that see how Star Wars can still look the better!

Incidently which thread did you post it in? I can't seem to find it. Might be worth posting that link in the following thread to. It's probably the HTF Star Wars thread that will be viewed the most, especially once the Blu-ray becomes officially announced sometime next year (presumably!):
