And that comes from the man who did this, just two years later: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=935850

Omg, that's terrible! I was gonna buy the Titanic BD but now I'm thinking I'll stick with the HDTV rip that uses the DVD master - I just wish there was a higher bitrate version of it - 14GB is not very good for a 3hrs20mins long feature at 1080p. Also, did you notice that the teal shift seems to be more pronounced in the 2D version? I would be fine with them making all these changes (except for the color) to the 3D version, because that is already altered by just being 3D but they should have left the 2D version well alone. I'm seriously a little pissed off right now :-/

@Harmy: rutracker has a 25gb version of the HDTV broadcast.

And yeah, it's horrible that they changed so much for the blu-ray. And actually there's one more "change" in the 3D version other than being open matte. It's mentioned at the bottom of that article I linked but it's not as visible there:

To convert the movie to 3D they had to cut out all characters from the backgrounds, and as a result all characters have blurred edges, more or less. It's very visible if comparing the edges of their hair.

Check this shot for example: 2D - 3D

Yeah, like I said, the 3D version is inherently altered by the conversion, and that is fine, since it is also inherently an alternate version. But the 2D version should just have benefited from the new scan and cleanup they did as the first step for the 3D version and not get changed beyond that. What is rutracker? Is it a torrent site?

Yeah.

One of the best on the web.  Use Chrome to translate the Russian.

The changes that George Lucas has made over the years to Star Wars is the equivalent of someone keying your car. On an intellectual level, you know that the car still works, and its only marred a fraction of a percent of the paintjob. On an emotional level, every time you see it, it's all you can focus on, and it makes you want to rip someone's face off.

There's even a little bit of a teal shift in the new superman blu-rays. The worst offender to me is Superman 3.

I had heard about the Superman BDs having color shift but never knew any details. There certainly seems to be some on LW 1 and 2.

I really really need that Mondo GBU disc.

By the way, has anybody mentioned Blade Runner?

Check this comparison of the DVD releases: http://caps-a-holic.com/vergleich.php?vergleichID=171

This one made me think about The Matrix:

Final cut? do not forget some DNR, the Workprint is one of the most honest BD transfers out there

Yeah, the final cut is horribly teal-tinted. And actually I haven't seen the workprint BD. I gotta get it!

I think with Blade Runner I'm ok with the change since the other cuts are available... and they've been honest about it the whole time. Also, going by those Superman shots, I mostly prefer the theatrical release - whichever that is. I always remember associating Reeve with a teal-ish suit. Didn't they even do that intentionally so that blue screen effects would be easier? Or did they give him a darker one instead? To be honest, I forget... and I tried to look it up, but I can't find anything to support it one way or the other.

Yeah I agree with you bkev, if all cuts are available in high quality then I'm fine with altered releases existing too. I just wanted to point out that the color timing of the final cut is in fact horrible.

From what I've seen in screenshot comparisons here and there, the Japanese BD is the same as the HD DVD, but also has cleaner upper and lower edges of the picture. The HD DVD is bright and blurry at those edges.

(referring to Terminator 2)

If clean edges are what you want then grab the WMV-HD somewhere. It's 1440x916 anamorphic and contains a few lines that were cropped from every other release.

The loss caused by the vertical stretch on the JP is obvious. Take a look at the shingles in the first comparison. Unfortunately the theatrical cut EU/AU HD DVD/Blu-ray encode had a level of DNR applied that wasn't used for the superior Special Edition encode.

It is a cool curio but has a few issues, and it is not fantastic with motion.

It was super cool when it came out tho, there were a few WMV discs mostly in Germany.

That thread also highlights the issues with the JP disc:

http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/18297

Look at Robert's hair there, there is a detail loss

I will still go to bat for the UK disc all day long, mind you with AVC the first US disc would have been well up there!

Talking of JP my importer has the new 3D version in stock but looking at the DNR and colour timing of it I am not up for spending £30.99 on it.

Funny I was wondering if my print damage shots were uploaded anywhere:

I didn't notice this because I only watch the original theatrical cut. ^_^

Just curious, does anyone know if there's been an attempt to colour correct the awful green tint on the Fellowship of the Ring Extended BD?  I've been looking for something like this for a while now.
