Fantasia 1982 Soundmix

I was able to get a copy of the 1982 Kostal recording of Fantasia, and would like to mix it back into the video from the new Blu-ray. What would be involved in this? My thinking is:

Capture the video from the DVD

Convert to AVI (required?)

Open the AVI with an editor and add the 1982 soundtrack

Compress and burn to DVD with both the '41 and the '82 soundtracks.

Any suggestions for software are welcome. If anyone has Deems Taylor recordings, that would be great as well. Also, would love to share this with anyone, but is it considered a "custom DVD" by this forum? I tried to figure it out, but I'm not sure.

I know I once found an ac3-track of the 1991 mix which contains the surviving narration by Deems Taylor. If I'm not mistaken, there was another Fantasia-project like yours here on the boards, and the link could be found in that thread.

Apart from that, I'm not really into the technical stuff of ripping and muxing. But I do wish you good luck on this project - the result should definitely be worthwhile!

Oh, wow! I would love to get a copy of that ac3 mix! I'll look for it on the other thread.

Thanks for the heads-up!

EyeShotFirst would probably have a copy, I think he was making a hybrid version for personal use...

Ah, yeah. It was EyeShotFirst!

I've found the thread for his "Hybrid Edition". Molly posted the link to the ac3-file in post 9. It's dead now, though, and I haven't had the file for a long time. Maybe you can ask for it?

You can read the thread here.

I have sent him a PM, so I'll update if he gets back to me.

I've got the Soundtrack and the AC3. I just need to find a free option of sending the RARs.

I am glad you are doing this. My computer just can't handle that load, I had plans to do it eventually, but you are doing the exact same project. So I thank you!!

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality. I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

May I suggest Dropbox? Basically, it's a program that creates a sharable folder on your system. You do have to register, but you get 2 GB of storage for free. It's a lot less clunky to share files directly between each other, rather than having to upload them to a file sharing site first.

Here's part one of the video on Vimeo.

https://vimeo.com/44630177

This is proving to be a somewhat difficult edit. A few of the pieces (Toccata and Fugue, Sorcerer's Apprentice) are easy and line up perfectly. A number of them, like Beethoven 6 are very, very difficult. This is because there is a bizarre edit in the piece (to eliminate Sunflower, the pickinanny centaur) and it throws the track off. Another few just need stretching - for some reason, the Night on Bald Mountain sequence doesn't line up as it goes along...

Anyway, I guess I'm looking for input. How does it look so far, tips, suggestions, etc.

I guess I'll reply to myself, just in case anybody has already read my previous post.

What I've found so far on the 2011 BluRay: All of the Deems Taylor narration is replaced. Every single last word. I'll be replacing these back to actually being Deems Taylor. As much as I like Corey Burton (who I'm pretty sure is the voice actor on the 2011 BluRay) it ought to be Deems Taylor, who had a huge part of the Fantasia process.

By the way, I didn't mention before but I will be using the 2011 BluRay in 720p as my source for the video. I had intended on keeping the narration and such from the BluRay, until I found that the narration was replaced. I'll probably do a version with the Deems narration and the Stokowski soundtrack, as well as the version with the Deems narration and the Kostal orchestration.

Rite of Spring was what gave me the most trouble. That's the whole reason I stopped. The Rite was too hard to line up, plus my computer was weezing to just run the program.

Just watched it. I gotta say, you did exactly what I wanted to do. Can't wait to see it with Deems Taylor's voice.

RE: Fantasia 1982 Soundmix

That's encouraging! I'll go back tonight and line up the Deems Taylor narration and put up the new version and the Sorcerer's Apprentice (I'm not working in order of screen time, but rather in order of easiness!)

It looks like I may have to replace the Kostal orchestration with the Stokowski for a couple of seconds during the Pastoral; for some reason, the Kostal is cut oddly and missing two seconds. :S

RE: Fantasia 1982 Soundmix

Yes, I suppose I'll have to. I can live with Burton "patching" Taylor, but I don't understand - did Disney think Burton was that terrible of a voice actor that people would notice a difference? I don't know why all of it needed to be replaced! :S

RE: Fantasia 1982 Soundmix

One question I had - was the 1982 version in plain stereo? The reason I ask is that the CDs obviously weren't in surround; I wondered if the 1982-1991 version was.

RE: Fantasia 1982 Soundmix

Interesting. I think Dolby can be surround, even when labeled "Stereo," but I don't think that is the case here. I find it fascinating that they would downgrade the movie from surround to stereo, but it was the 80's.

Also, the two clips I promised are uploading to Vimeo as we speak...

"Dolby Stereo" is a surround format.

That's what I thought. Thanks for clearing that up, Moth3r.

Any idea where the surround sound might be found? I wonder if it could be done manually...

Give it a little bit. For some reason, Vimeo delays their videos...

What do you think of the narration replacement in the first video?

This was a tough segment, but I'm slowly getting the hang of it. The Nutcracker suite is uploading now...

Any real problems so far? I noticed a bit of sync issues with the intro to Toccata and Fugue, but other than that, anybody notice anything odd?
