As now I'm a proud owner of a "brand old" computer with BD-burner, I'd like to release a BD with all the extras found on laserdisc editions (like trailers, teasers, featurettes, documentaries etc.) and still not on DVD or BD.
I'm aware there were some threads about laserdisc extras, but I'd like to have one dedicated thread instead of sparse ones, with updates right in the first post.
I know for sure that some of these extras, in particular the ones on the Definitive Collection, are present on DVD or BD, but I don't know, or I'm not sure, which ones...

Awesome! It would be great to have all of these extras in one nice little package.

Fully agree, an "all in one" disc would be excellent

Also if at SD resolution, I don't think a single BD-25 will contain'em all... should I consider to do a BD boxset with them? (^^,)
Well, the idea is to make a BD full of extras from laserdiscs, that are NOT available on DVD or BD - apart the OT and SE trailers and short interviews with George Lucas, which I'd like to put in anyway...

This. This I would be very interested in. Very interested. Especially since you seem to do a quality job with your transfers. Like, I know some/all/most(?) of these have been transferred from a LaserDisc at some point, but it would be great to see them in one place, and at a consistent quality. I would be very appreciative. So, two thumbs up from me!
On a personal note, I would be happy if you included ones still on BD/DVD, but I totally understand if that's not what you want your purpose to be.
May the Force be with you.

I own them all, for what it's worth. Every DVD or Blu-Ray of the movies released - 2004 set, 2006 individuals, 2006 individuals a second time (long story), and the 2011 Blu-Ray. I don't know why the assumption was that I didn't...

AvatarAs I said above, I just like consistency. If Andrea is going to do a quality transfer, why not just to them all for posterity's sake? I.e., this is what we had, at this point in time, at this quality. May as well preserve it in one fell swoop. I like having completion, and (again from a personal standpoint), it would just feel weird to not do it all.
But I digress. I was just mildly flustered that the assumption was my desire was due to the fact that I didn't legally own the material. I like Star Wars too much to do that.
So, back on topic, I am very much a fan of this idea Andrea, and hope that it all works out!
May the Force be with you.

Laserdisc MasterAs I wrote in the first post, I'd like to do a disc that contains laserdisc-only extras - not available on DVD or BD... but nobody told me yet which are the LD-only ones!
I must admit I like also the idea of making a "laserdisc extra compendium", that indeed probably will take more than a single BD-25...

I found this thread about that... I have not watched the four DVDs; reading the list of supplemental material in the first post, it seems they include all the DC extras, plus a lot more things that were not on laserdiscs... but it seems that the 1997 SE extras are not there, right?
IF, and I underline IF, I will decide to do a SW XTRAS [ruLes] using my own "method" (^^,), then I will use for NTSC material the Pioneer HLD-X9 for its superior quality, three different copies of the DC (two US and one japanese) and two copies of SE box set for median/average; I will include different language soundtracks and subtitles where available.
Using a newer (maybe better) capture card, the second best laserdisc player ever made, average/median methods, a better video codec (X.264 Vs MPEG2), a bigger media (BD25 Vs DVD5), higher bitrate for audio and video... the final result will be probably a better quality release, with less artifacts; plus, the most important thing, I will release "From Star Wars to Jedi" without japanese subtitles, and I don't think it is available elsewhere, right?
But, at the end, why someone should make all of this - that will take a lot of time and hard work - when the most part is available on BD, with higher quality? Are extras on BD "specialized" too, to worth a special preservation?
Or, simply, I could think to gather all the SW laserdisc extras, despite the fact they are available on DVD or BD, just because they are on laserdisc, and they will be a perfect companion for the OUT and SET... and, because a lot of people will be happy to have them all in a single place!
Could be a bad case of laserdisc fever?!? (LD,)

This Collection has many Video sources from the Executor Set including the Lapti Nek Song.
You can see it here:

I search for the Lapti Nek Song in great quality.
Hope you will do your own LD Collection with all Bonus material.

Padawan LearnerYou could start out by researching the Rowman (as benduwan has stated above) & the Dr. Gonzo sets ..... I believe they had a fair amount of the LD only features collected from the various releases.

Padawan LearnerAndrea, have you seen the EditDroid set ? Most of its material is in really nice quality, but the documentaries have burnt in Japanese subtitles

Laserdisc MasterIf the documentaries you are talking about are the following:
I'm sorry, I have the same ones - with japanese subtitltes... but, IIRC, they are the same present onto the BD official release, so...
At least, "From Star Wars to Jedi" is missing, and I have it without japanese subtitles...
About the EditDroid: I'm sure the quality is good (also if I have not seen them), but after the OUT and SET projects, I could assure you that a median and/or average of three captures eliminates a lot of noise on video, plus using a better laserdisc player and a better capture card, the final result should be better.
Still don't know if there is enough interest in the community in releasing this kind of bonus disc, as almost all the content (apart "From Star Wars to Jedi" without japanese subtitles) is present in one or more releases...

Yes, those are the documentaries I referred to. I admit I have seen them just once, but were they not differently edited on the bluray or something like that ?
I also think that making an avarage of different captures would help, if you WILL do it you can be sure that there IS public interest :-)

Andrea, I'd just like you to be aware of my interest in you doing this too. I watched the Making of Star Wars for the first time the other day after capturing my Executor VHS set, and would love to see this transferred properly from laserdisc. It would also be nice to have all of these in one place, over 1 or more Blu-Ray discs, even if weren't going to go through all the filtering and upscaling that you have done with your ruLes projects I think it would be still worth doing. ;)

Laserdisc MasterI'm just doing test captures with the DC documentaries; as they are shot on video, the quality is quite good also using a "simple" LD-V4300D... don't know if using the HLD-X9 will improve a lot the video quality... but I'm sure a median/average of three copies (2 US + 1 JP) will improve it.
A tough work will be to synch temporally the parts with stop frames, like photo galleries - they must be split and synchronized separately... (xx/) at least, no IVTC will be needed!
About post processing: a bit of noise reduction will be necessary - just a bit; for the upscaling, a lot of extras found on BD are SD, so they must not need to be upscaled, but... the problem will be to mix NTSC and PAL contents!
Maybe I could encode the material to MPEG2, so I could release AVCHD/BD with mixed contents, and different PAL DVDs and NTSC DVDs, without encoding twice... AFAIK, mixed content (like PAL and NTSC) may reside in the same BD disc... someone could confirm this? It's true that the PAL interviews should be the same found on NTSC, but "From Star Wars to Jedi" without subtitles are available only in PAL, so...
What is holding me back to begin this project is just that I'd like to show it to my family and friends, and not all of them understand english... what I really need to give the "green light" to this project, are the transcriptions of all the extras' dialogs in english, then I'll do myself the translation to italian - help to translate them to french, german and spanish is welcome!
I searched a lot during the last week, but didn't find them; maybe someone with huge patience and a lot of spare time could do it... (^^3)???

Euro BD players must support both PAL and NTSC and they can coexist on a disc.
North American BD players aren't required to, and most won't play the PAL content.

@drngr
Where did you hear that? As far as I know all players must support all possible formats.
Which could be PAL and/or NTSC.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Media_format
I assume the players can handle that, but most of the TVs in NTSC Country would not proper display PAL, which also should be gone since all the TVs are selled worldwide.
