Magister Pontifex MaximusI just read this on one of the other boards and thought it's actually a good and doable idea.

A false Star Wars movie memory from me: I always recalled in RoTJ since I was a kid that after the Ewok glider gets shot down that you see a shot of the Ewoks watching from the trees and then you see the AT-ST stomp on and smashing (walking over) the fallen glider. Once I got the DVD I realized we never actually see this happen, though its pretty clearly implied by the editing. Glider falls... we see the ewok reaction shot and a close up of the fallen glider and then we see the walking legs. No actual smashing going on (and no, as a kid I didn't cover my eyes!). Obviously my imagination filled it in, though! Less of a false memory and just forgetting, my younger brother and I listened to the ROTJ storybook & record so much (before we had a recording of the actual movie), we forgot that many of the lines in it are different from the film.

And this LADY re-dubbed with a lady voice (as "BigBadGMan" pointed out).
That would make the rebel pilots as a whole much more interesting.
Hey! I thought I said it first! I demand royalties and rights when you mention redubbing the woman's voice!

Honestly, I'd do the opposite and eliminate the glider. The trip ropes, the log rolls and the log-smash I can understand. But a glider? really?

I can't see why not.
The Ancient Greeks had clockwork mechanisms but this was unknown until relatively recently.
It's a modern conceit that technology follows a straight line.
Just because the Ewoks have stone aged clubs and live in trees (some of which may be ideal for making gliders) it doesn't follow that they invented everything in the same order that we remember ourselves doing.

Magister Pontifex MaximusIf you are having problems posting after quotes try posting without quoting, I've reported it as a possible issue as I noticed Gaffer Tape posting in a similar fashion earlier.

We've talked about this many times on here but many of the problems with RotJ have to do with where ESB left off and where this one picks up. Because of that, RotJ has less drama and feels forced.
The rebellion is stronger than ever before.
There's a rehash of several ideas and plot devices from the first two films.
I've tried to write stuff to replace the DS2 but nothing seems to fit into the "bigger and better" category except foregoing another big weapon altogether and just doing Coruscant and Endor with the rebel fleet fighting the imperial navy.....something completly different. But then what would be the surprise, the thing that turns the rebellion's dire straits up a notch towards the end?
A hidden death star! :p
But then we have another retread.
Maybe RotJ should just be the flat out war movie with a big land battle on Endor and a space battle above Coruscant at the end and forget it? No DS2 or anything.

I always thought it'd be so cool to add coruscant to ROTJ. I dreamed about it and the more I thought about it, I don't see nothing that terribly wrong with this idea. Now obviously this needs to executed perfectly and make sense or this would be an utter failure.

If someone did that it would be easy to take Coruscant scenes from the other movies and modify them. I'd rather see a Coruscant based directly on Ralph McQuarrie's designs. Some elements carried over to the prequels, but McQuarrie's city planet is more gothic-deco. ROTJ and TPM's version is probably the closest...

There are a ton of other paintings I'd like to link to (these two def emphasize the 'gothic' part, maybe giving the wrong impression without the context of others) but I can't find many of them on the interwebs, sadly.

Magister Pontifex MaximusAs you know I'm all for pushing the boat out when it comes to radical ideas but short of making this a total remake how do you intend to replace every shot and reference to the Death Star with Coruscant?
And how would that even make sense?
Coruscant isn't a weapon, it's a planet.
You need the threat element to get the Rebels out of hiding.
If you had the Rebels just growing an enormous pair and marching right into the capital without them having gained some new advantage or have some sort of final threat dangling over them it screeches the question, why didn't they do it earlier?
You could have the Empire planning on blowing up Coruscant using a Death Star type plot device (possibly hidden on or built into the forest moon) hoping to blame the Rebels.
The Rebels could get wind of the plan and come to the rescue only to be caught in a trap.
You still wouldn't see much of Coruscant.
Say goodbye, to all this and "hello" to Jason Issacs.

As long as I was reading your post Bingo, the same idea you posted came to mind!
You could make Coruscant be the target of the new DS, so we all would know what its destruction would imply, but with no need of including brand new scenes to the movie. The Rebels would be desperate to save the old republic's capital.
However, you would still have to find a reason for the Empire to destroy its core. And what's more, the idea of a planet in danger of being blown up would make ROTJ even more similar to ANH (Yavin)

Return to Form, or Forum in this case!!If you completely reject the prequels, Coruscant could just be a big city on Endor.
"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won't last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you'll be able to project it on a 20' by 40' screen with perfect quality. I think it's the director's prerogative, not the studio's to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I would love to see the bunker battle deleted scene from ROTJ reinstated! I've always felt that Han, Leia, Chewie, etc. reached the control room far too easily.

While I agree, it also would be interesting to try to integrate this into a later point after Han convinces the bunker folks to open the door again. Adywan and others have wanted to show more efforts on the parts of the Rebels, and I wonder if it might be worthwhile to show that the battle was not over once the Ewoks surrounded the Imperials just outside the bunker doors. Just a thought, though.
The ROTJ collaborative thread is a wealth of ideas, both on how to edit Return of the Jedi, as well as how to collaborate in an edit. Emanswfan has taken leadership of the project.

Magister Pontifex MaximusIf the deleted material is salvageable I'd like to see it augmented with new shots of stormies and rebels fighting it out (more like the escape from Bespin sequences in ESB).
ANH and ESB both had scenes of the Rebels fighting the Imperial troops and ROTJ suffered because the Ewoks (in the way they were depicted, comedy bears on the most part) took almost all the screen time of the land battle.
I still think they should be the factor that gives the Rebels a fighting chance against a whole legion of troops (and not just the few dozen we see in the currently available versions).
But the bunker could give us some old fashioned Stormy Vs Rebel shoot out action which this film sorely lacks.

It might make the endgame structurally more like ANH (with the space battle) but it would shift the stakes from a small band of freedom fighters on the edge of nowhere under attack, to the Imperial capital openly rioting and the massed fleets of the Empire and the Alliance fighting out in space fighting their final battle with the threat of total defeat for either side in the balance.
Imagine the Capital is already having it's own insurrection and the Imperials want to sterilise it (and luring the Rebel's in would kill two birds with one superweapon).
Ady noticed that if you took the celebration scene on Coruscant from the SE and put a different soundtrack on it it could come across as a riot.
You have the crowds openly molesting a stormtrooper, you have statues of Palpatine being torn down.
If Coruscant was having it's own insurrection it would be an ideal situation for the Empire to set an example and flex it's muscles.
It would give make the story more of a conclusion.
The Empire in it's hubris (much like it's leader) hands the Rebels a chance for final victory but to achieve it they have to put themselves in the worst kind of peril.
God knows how it could be done though.

I actually kinda like that idea. I remember around the time of the prequels there was a rumor Lucas was going to finish once and for all the OT by connecting them more to the PT.
So you would have an insurrection on Coruscant led by Jar Jar while the rebels were attacking the DS2 and Endor, etc.
