The Ancient Greeks had clockwork mechanisms but this was unknown until relatively recently.
It's a modern conceit that technology follows a straight line.
Just because the Ewoks have stone aged clubs and live in trees (some of which may be ideal for making gliders) it doesn't follow that they invented everything in the same order that we remember ourselves doing.
